President Donald Trump nominates Alina Habba for full four-year U.S. attorney term for NJ

President Donald Trump is nominating interim U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba for a full four-year term, the White House announced July 1. Habba was named U.S. attorney for New Jersey in March by Trump, who called the appointment "a great pleasure" and praised her as someone who "will fight tirelessly to secure a legal system that is both fair and just for the wonderful people of New Jersey." Habba made headlines when she charged Newark Mayor Ras Baraka for allegedly trespassing at Delaney Hall, a privately run federal immigration detention center in Newark. Those charges were later dropped, with Habba saying a statement, "After extensive consideration, we have agreed to dismiss Mayor Baraka's misdemeanor charge of trespass for the sake of moving forward." However, in the same social media post, Habba announced that she had brought charges against New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver for allegedly "assaulting, impeding and interfering with law enforcement" at Delaney Hall. As her 120-day term nears its end, Habba will need to secure a full-term appointment to continue serving as the U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey. Habba, 41, has been one of Trump's most visible legal defenders in recent years, gaining national attention while representing him in several civil and criminal cases. She was named counsel to Trump's Save America PAC in 2023, later joining his inner legal circle as "counselor to the president." Born in Summit, Habba graduated from the Kent Place School in the city in 2002. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Lehigh University and a law degree from Widener University Commonwealth Law School. Before her work with Trump, Habba handled civil litigation and corporate law in private practice. She clerked for Judge Eugene J. Codey Jr. at the Civil Division of Superior Court in Newark and previously served as a managing partner at Habba Madaio & Associates in Bedminster. Habba is also a mother of three. She described herself during the Republican National Convention in July as a "devout Catholic, a proud first-generation Arab American woman and a feisty Jersey girl." Trump's new portrait revealed by White House; netizens say it ‘will hang in the Smithsonian one day'

This week, the White House released a new official portrait of President Trump, replacing the earlier January image that had drawn comparisons to a mugshot. Shared on Monday via X, the updated photo shows Trump staring directly into the camera. His right eye is slightly squinted, and his lips form a firm, straight line. He is wearing a blue suit paired with one of his signature red ties, and an American flag pin adorns his left lapel. The background is dark and unadorned. The White House stated, 'NEW OFFICIAL PRESIDENTIAL PORTRAIT JUST DROPPED." One of the users remarked, 'The portrait is great. But did we get the frame at dollar tree?' Another stated, 'Looking crooked and criminal af.' A third commented, 'That will hang in the Smithsonian one day.' 'Looks like someone painted a haunted rotisserie chicken just moments before it asked to suspend the Constitution. I've seen less tension in a gas station Bigfoot drawing", 'No one can get a picture on the nail on the first try', 'Looks like sh**' were some other reactions made. Some said, 'You look very Powerful Donald Trump. May the Force be with You!' 'Looking good Boss.' Trump's initial official presidential portrait was released the day before his inauguration and remained the image on the official @POTUS X account until May 5, 2017. The National Portrait Gallery later commissioned a painted portrait, funded through donations from Trump's Save America PAC. A new portrait marking his second term was unveiled on January 17, 2025. The most recent portrait was announced today, June 2. The chief White House photographer Daniel Torok took both photographs, reports said. Official presidential portraits, whether paintings or photographs are created to honour the service of a US commander in chief. The tradition began with Gilbert Stuart's iconic portrait of George Washington and has continued with nearly every president since. These portraits are typically displayed in locations such as the White House and the National Portrait Gallery. The National Portrait Gallery, often in collaboration with the White House, usually commissions portraits of outgoing presidents and first ladies.

U.S. Attorney Alina Habba says she'll investigate Murphy, Platkin on cooperation with ICE

Two of the state's top ranking Democrats seem to be in the crosshairs of the acting U.S. attorney for New Jersey. Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba said on Fox News on Thursday night that she has instructed her office to open an investigation into Gov. Phil Murphy and state Attorney General Matthew Platkin for not cooperating with federal immigration authorities, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. 'I want it to be a warning for everybody that I have instructed my office today to open an investigation into Gov. Murphy, to open an investigation into Attorney General Platkin, who has also instructed the state police not to assist any of our federal, and they list our federal agencies that are under my direction,' Habba said during an appearance on Sean Hannity's show. Habba said that will 'no longer stand' and federal Attorney General Pam Bondi as well as President Donald Trump have 'made it clear that we are to take all criminals, violent criminals, out of this country and completely enforce federal law.' She said the action is 'not political' but 'simply against crime' and if anyone in New Jersey gets in the way of that, they will be charged 'for obstruction, for concealment, and I will come after them hard.' At an unrelated press conference on Friday morning, Platkin noted that New Jersey's Immigrant Trust Directive, which appears to be the basis for Habba's potential investigation is 'settled law that's been upheld by judges appointed by President Trump.' 'I don't typically launch investigations on cable news networks,' Platkin said. 'I'm focused on doing my job, which is to keep the residents of our state safe.' He said he has reached out to Habba in multiple ways but she 'has not wanted to have conversation' and that Habba 'said publicly she wants to politicize the office. I hope she starts doing her job.' The directive says that state and local police cannot participate in federal immigration enforcement operations or keep someone detained only to comply with a civil immigration detainer request. The directive includes exemptions if the immigrant is charged or convicted with a 'violent or serious offense' or subject to a final order of removal by a judge. Before that she had served as his longtime personal attorney and a legal adviser to his campaign She is a New Jersey native and gained national attention while representing him in several civil and criminal cases, including his legal battles with New York Attorney General Letitia James and writer E. Jean Carroll. In 2023, she was named counsel to Trump's Save America PAC and later joined his inner legal circle as "counselor to the president." When she was appointed, Murphy wished her well and said she 'seems like a very significant talent' and that it is 'historically a nonpartisan position, so I'm expecting and assume she'll continue that tradition.' Federal authorities have been conducting raids in search of criminal immigrants since Trump took office, including in Newark. Among the individuals deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration was a Maryland father named Kilmar Abrego Garcia, even though he had won an earlier protective order barring his expulsion. The U.S. Supreme Court ordered the Justice Department to begin the process of releasing him. The Trump administration contends he is a member of the MS-13 gang, although it has presented no evidence to back up that claim. Katie Sobko covers the New Jersey Statehouse.
