J&K hydro power project receives initial approval, Infra News, ET Infra
Advt Setting aside key green provisions in view of national interest, an environment ministry panel has given "in-principle" approval i.e. the project will likely be accepted for diversion of more than 847 hectares of reserved forest and 'jungle-jhari' land for construction of a hydro power plant. The new project is namely the 1,856MW Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project in Ramban district of Jammu & approval will be subject to grant of environment clearance by the J&K govt, but the move signals the intent to harness the potential of Chenab river following suspension of Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) with the river's waters flow unchecked to the neighbouring country despite India's right to use it for non-consumptive purposes.

'Nod' to divert forest land for J&K hydel unit
