Iconic US singer with over 125 million record sales given personalised Celtic top by up-and-coming Scots artist
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) CELTIC had to settle for two rather than three trophies this year. But in the man behind Three Times a Lady, the Hoops may well have gained a new fan. 3 Brooke Combe has been supporting music icon Lionel Richie on his UK tour 3 Combe with Richie and the rest of the touring team 3 She gifted him a Celtic top as thanks for letting her gig with him Legendary US singer Lionel Richie kicked off the UK leg of his latest tour in Glasgow earlier this month. And joining him on stage has been up-and-coming Scots artist Brooke Combe. Soul icon Richie, 75, has been on the road for his Say Hello To The Hits tour. Combe, 23, has had a breakout year with her album Dancing at the Edge of the World after going viral on the back of a cover of Yes Sir I Can Boogie, the song that powered the Scotland national team to the Euros. A self-confessed Celtic fanatic, Combe took the opportunity to mark her time touring with Richie by gifting him a personalised Hoops top. The songstress posted a picture of them together on her social media accounts after their final concert, in which she's holding up a Celtic shirt with RICHIE 25 on the back. Richie himself can be seen holding a box covered in Celtic badges with what looks like several more jerseys inside, perhaps intended for his backing singers, crew and entourage. Combe called the experience of gigging with the Dancing on the Ceiling singer one she "won't be forgetting anytime soon." Her post on Instagram read: "What a tour! Class crowds, top laughs, & memories myself & the band won't be forgetting anytime soon. "Huge thanks to @lionelrichie & his team for being the most amazing/inspiring group of people I've had the pleasure of working alongside the last few weeks. Celtic transfer special - Nygren in and Kyogo to return "Keep saying it but not many people get the chance, at 25, to hit the road with a true music legend. What a legacy Lionel has created. Beyond grateful. "Before I cancelled those gigs last year, my world was falling down but I took time for myself, got healthier & I've never felt better. What a boss six months this has been. "Thanks & hi to all the folks that came down early each night too. "All the best. "Brooke X." The Hoops love-in comes hot on the heels of Renee Rapp being spotted at the Capital Summertime Ball wearing a retro Celtic tracksuit top. Lionel Richie stops Co-op Live show for Manchester revelation as thousands enjoy iconic hits
Superstar Lionel Richie embraced his love of Manchester during the first of two nights in the city as part of his greatest hits tour. Quite startlingly, it has been 10 years since Lionel Richie's iconic Glastonbury legend slot at Worthy Farm for what the famous American singer-songwriter dubbed 'Glastonberry' throughout. A decade on, Lionel has lost none of his quick-witted nature or dazzling showmanship displayed as he opened the first of two nights at Manchester's Co-op Live Arena - quickly following on from a visit from another US great Bruce Springsteen. READ MORE: Robbie Williams reunites with Spice Girl at star-studded Manchester Co-op Live gig READ MORE: X Factor star delayed holiday to join Robbie Williams on stage in Manchester in 'career defining moment' Thousands headed to the venue on Thursday evening in sparkling jackets, the odd curly wig and other Lionel-inspired regalia as his Say Hello to The Hits 2025 tour stopped in the city. Some piled in early to catch support act Brooke Combe while others enjoyed covers from a Huddersfield three-piece performing in the arena's newly-relaunched Co-op Backstage Club. All were present-and-correct, in their auditorium seats, just after 9pm when the man they were longing to see took to the stage. Slightly tardy (doubtful many will hold it against Lionel), a sweeping montage featuring Lionel down-the-years preluded his arrival, featuring an enviable plethora of award and gong citations from the star's career, which dates back to the 1960s, alongside nods to some of the musical icons he's collaborated with. Then quite simply, Lionel had them at Hello as he launched from under the catwalk-like stage set-up to adoring adulation from the Manchester masses. Lionel, who turns 76 next week, wasn't messing about with big numbers coming fast. The opener followed by Running With The Night and the 1980s idol, who donned a snazzy white jacket, taking to his piano for Commodores classic Easy. As billed, the evening was something of an open-top trophy parade tour of major songs with a large helping of that Lionel Richie charisma dropped in for good measure. The towering figure enthusiastically declared: 'It's Manchester. We've got to blow the roof off the joint.' Lionel regularly informed the audience of his Mancunian experiences over the mere '230 years' that he has been visiting the city on tour. At one point, as our video shows, he stopped proceedings to embrace that unique Manchester weather - so lauded and admired across the globe. Lionel said: 'I want you all to clear this up for me. I woke up this morning and I opened up the curtains and I saw sunshine. I didn't know you had sunshine in Manchester. My god. 'And, I said 'quickly, quickly let's go downstairs I want to get some kind of a tan'. The guy at the (hotel) counter said 'I wouldn't do that if I were you, it might rain later on tonight'.' Laughter ensued and cries of 'go on, Lionel!' quickly followed ahead of Stuck On You. The white jacket was dispensed as fire erupted from the rear of the stage for the funk-laden Brick House which saw Lionel strut down his catwalk with his talented accompanying band. The superstar paused to make a mental note to turn the heat down for Friday night's follow-up performance. He quipped: 'I was taking a moment to think about just how hot that fire really was.' Alongside the music, Lionel's live events go a long way to encapsulate a sense of fun, often lost during big shows, and there were a lot of beaming smiles on faces at the Co-op on Thursday. The former Commodores singer was regularly joined by thousands of backing vocalists who made up the crowd and gave them a chance to hit the right notes, taking the Diana Ross role, for Endless Love. My Destiny and Dancing On The Ceiling, the latter being met by rapturous applause at its conclusion, were added set highlights. The main portion of the proceedings concluding with a second piano appearing and Lionel being lifted up high on it for Say You, Say Me before an impassioned declaration for equality preceded We Are The World. A quick addition of a green sequinned jacket came as Lionel returned for the one-song encore All Night Long, a party mandate his fans were keen to adhere to. Although with curfew being pushed at 11.05pm, the curtain came down with Lionel telling the city: 'I love you so much, Manchester.' Iconic 80s hitmaker, 75, makes candid confession about his health as he takes to the stage at London's O2 Arena
Lionel Richie made a candid confession about his health as he took to the stage at London's O2 Arena on Friday. The iconic 80s hitmaker, 75, is an Academy Award, Grammy and Golden Globe winning singer-songwriter and a judge on American Idol. Lionel announced last year that he would be heading to the UK with his Say Hello To The Hits tour, playing dates in Glasgow, Sheffield, Birmingham, Manchester and London's O2. And kicking off his first of two London dates on Friday, Lionel made a confession to the adoring audience. 'When you see me jumping and running, sliding, running up stairs, running down stairs, I want you all to know one thing: I'm in pain,' he told fans, The Telegraph reported. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Lionel has sold over 125 million records worldwide, producing unforgettable anthems like Hello, All Night Long, Say You Say Me, We Are The World, Easy and many more. Lucky fans who had tickets his London gig raved about the star's incredible performance. Commenting on his Instagram, they wrote: 'You were fabulous, Lionel! It was a spectacular night,'; 'Fantastic night, loved every minute❤️,'; 'One off my bucket list. That voice melts my heart ❤️,'; 'You were - and are! - INCREDIBLE! What a show. Second time of seeing you live and you are such a joy to watch. I could do it all again! It was my birthday treat for tomorrow - and what a treat it was! ❤️❤️❤️❤️,'; 'You were brilliant. We loved every second and didn't want it to end ❤️❤️❤️,'; 'Even better than 20 something years ago,'; 'It was absolutely a night to remember. You're the GOAT! I can't wait for the next one. I'm still pumped from tonight,'; 'You were everything we hoped for and more #legend thank you,'; 'What an amazing night. You are TRULY AMAZING please come back again soon ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.' Amid his resurgence, Lionel has penned a tell-all memoir about his legendary nearly six-decade-long career, which is set for release for a September. The memoir, titled Truly, will be an 'intimate, deeply candid memoir,' according to its publisher HarperOne. The Endless Love singer 'seeks to inspire all who doubt themselves or feel their dreams don't matter by chronicling lessons learned in the course of his most unlikely of success stories,' a press release stated. Richie went 'from a painfully shy, tragically late bloomer grappling with ADHD to his dramatic transformation into a world-class entertainer and composer of love songs that have played like the soundtrack of our lives.' Lionel is also the father to daughters Nicole and Sofia Richie. Richie explained that he considers himself 'the reluctant hero of my own story,' per People. The memoir will begin when Richie was a college student at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama at the height of the civil rights movement, then explores his time as a member of The Commodores before taking a look at the superstardom that came his way as a solo artist in the 1980s. 'I travel the world, and all people really want to hear is, "I love you,"' Richie said in a statement. 'I love you is forever. And the day we realize we come as different tribes, but we all represent the global family of mankind … the day that happens, we will clearly be united, together, as one.' 'Lionel Richie is not only a music legend who has long been a multicultural and generational bridge, he has witnessed monumental shifts in history and entertainment while working with some of the most significant talents of our age,' Judith Curr, president and publisher of HarperOne Group, said. She added, 'We are thrilled to not only be providing his fans and friends with a nuanced, detailed, emotional telling of what his life has held, but his view of the world — what has changed and what has remained the same, the difficulties and the causes for celebration.' The Lady hitmaker will detail what he calls his 'darkest period' – his father's death, two bitter divorces and an injury to his vocal chords that nearly stripped him of his voice. He also write about how the changes in the music industry challenged him, which ultimately led him to become a judge on American Idol. 'Richie will share how he lived to tell this story – and through divine intervention, soon took off to higher heights, with one of the greatest rejuvenation stories ever told," the publisher said. Richie's memoir will be released on September 30, 2025 and is available for pre-sale now.

Lionel Richie review – larger-than-life legend delivers a lesson in charm
'Come to hear me sing?' Lionel Richie teases. 'Not gonna happen!' His Say Hello to the Hits tour couldn't be a clearer invitation to croon along with a true great, and from natural opener Hello, a loud and proud audience seizes that chance. A video montage of Richie's 50-year career and perfect 'tache drives the point home. Tonight is about legacy – not just the Grammys and multi-platinum hits which made Richie's name, but the way that songs such as Truly and the Commodores' Three Times a Lady have become intertwined with people's lives. 'I'll just fit myself in best I can,' he booms, laughing. He has joyful chemistry with his band, and together they put plenty of polish on Richie's trophy cabinet of hits. Dancing on the Ceiling is glittery and buoyant, veering into Van Halen's Jump before some surprisingly gritty guitar shredding. Brick House is raw and funky, with Richie slinking left to right with the band in tow, like a matured T-Birds. Sometimes the band (and the audience) overpower his glorious, buttery voice, but he ad-libs and riffs and ends every song with a proud, showbizzy 'yeah!' – even tender, cinematic ballads such as Endless Love. Perhaps that montage skirted dangerously close to an In Memoriam – lots of dry ice, photos of Richie looking angelic against a night sky – but, at 75, the man himself is larger than life. He puts in a tight five between most songs, riffing on Scotland's bad weather, and implores the audience to feel empathy for refugees and immigrants: 'Those people, they're us,' he urges. 'You would do the same for your family.' This Hits tour shows us Richie on cruise control, but radiant nonetheless. He struts up and down the thrust stage, laser-focused on making the furthest corners of the Hydro feel special, and if anyone's earned the right to lean on charm, surely it's Richie. Tonight feels breezy rather than electric, and even a soaring, hip-shaking encore of All Night Long is homely rather than thrilling. A night of few fireworks, perhaps, but full of deep love and mutual appreciation. Such worn-in comfort takes decades to get just right. Lionel Richie's Say Hello to the Hits tours the UK and Europe until August
