New cases hit a century in biggest single-day spike in current wave

Kolkata: Bengal on Thursday logged the highest single-day spike in Covid cases during the current wave, with the state reporting 106 positive cases in the past 24 hours. The total active cases in the state now stand at 538, even as the figure is way down from Kerala, which has the highest case load in the country with 1,487 cases. In May beginning, the city had only a single Covid-positive case. By the end of the third week of May, 12 more individuals tested positive. Health officials said the rapid spike began at the end of May when the active case load piled up to 205. From June 1, the state logged daily positive cases in double digits until it scaled up to three digits on Thursday. "There still is an uptick in states like Kerala, Delhi, and Maharashtra, and hence we are likely to see an upward Covid graph in our state for now. Even as we are still getting very few samples, most of these samples are coming positive," said microbiologist Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhuri of Peerless Hospital. Doctors said the present case load is unlikely to be the true picture of the infection in the community, as many are not coming forward to test. While the infection is mild in almost all cases, they said detecting the infection was important to protect the vulnerable. While the good aspect is that most infections are mild, if the numbers keep surging, there will be a few patients who will be vulnerable to severe infection," said infectious diseases specialist Sayan Chakraborty of Manipal Hospitals, Dhakuria. Apart from Bengal, three other states reported daily cases in three digits on Thursday: Kerala (114), Karnataka (112) and Delhi (105). "While the disease is causing only flu-like symptoms, the surge in numbers is a concern as the infection can be more aggressive on the geriatric population and the immunocompromised," said infectious disease control specialist Debkishore Gupta. While the state has reported only one Covid-19 related death so far, doctors said that if the number of cases continues to rise, there can be more mortality. Some hospitals have a few patients admitted to the ICU. "Among the seven admitted to our hospital, three senior citizens with comorbidities are requiring oxygen, while the rest are being treated in the ward," said Doli Biswas, chief nursing officer at Fortis Hospital Anandapur. Fifteen Covid-positive patients are under care at Ruby General Hospital. Sources said none has a severe infection. "While none of the four patients under our care has a severe infection, they are in hospital care due to their comorbidities," said Charnock Hospital general manager Ipsita Kundu. Most hospitals across the city currently have Covid positive patients, including the govt facilities. "We currently have three patients, including an infant and the mother. None of them is requiring intensive care so far," said Sudipta Mitra, CEO of Peerless Hospital.

7 new Covid cases in Kolkata push Bengal's active case tally to 10

Representational image KOLKATA: Kolkata has recorded at least seven Covid-19 cases in the past week. Six patients, admitted at a hospital off Bypass, are receiving treatment for Covid as well as other existing health conditions. On Sunday, TOI reported about four active cases, including a 15-year-old boy admitted to Peerless Hospital, a pregnant woman at Sushrata Nursing Home in Kankurgachhi, and two from a family in Mograhat, who did not require hospital care. According Apollo Multispecialty Hospital sources, the six came for treatment for various health conditions in the past week. Covid tests were conducted as all of them exhibited mild to severe symptoms. All six are being treated in isolation wards. A 70-year-old man with existing heart issues came with fever and respiratory problems. An upper respiratory panel test detected SARS-CoV-2, followed by an RT-PCR confirmation four days ago. While he needed BiPAP support, the oxygen requirement is now only one litre an hour. "His condition is improving. Since he had other comorbidities, Covid cannot be the main reason for his condition," said Apollo ECMO physician Arpan Chakraborty. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like [Click Here] 2025 Best Luxury Hotel Prices Expertinspector Learn More Undo Till May 19, Bengal had only one active case. Now, there are at least 10 active cases, mostly from Kolkata. "It is not unusual to encounter a spike. While there is no reason to panic unless we get many patients with severe infection, it is always good to revert to preventive measures like wearing masks and using hand sanitiser," said infectious diseases specialist Sayan Chakraborty of Manipal Dhakuria. Pradip Tondon, CEO of Belle Vue Clinic, said a woman who had a gastrointestinal problem and came with a Covid positive report was discharged on Saturday. "So far, we know that Omicron sub-lineage JN.1 is behind the current spike happening elsewhere. We have already encountered this strain. But to protect the vulnerable, symptomatic individuals as well as those with comorbidities should start taking preventive measures," said pulmonologist Kausik Chaudhuri, former Covid-19 nodal officer at ID Hospital Beliaghata. "So far, we do not have new Covid guidelines from the health department. While the situation is not at all alarming, such guidelines could raise awareness among the public," said critical care specialist Soutik Panda of Woodlands Hospital. Mayor Firhad Hakim said, "The situation in Bengal has not yet necessitated issuance of Covid SOP. We are closely monitoring the situation. There is no reason to panic."
