Penang couple suspected of abusing 12yo daughter remanded four days
BALIK PULAU: A married couple arrested for allegedly abusing their 12-year-old daughter has been remanded for four days. Balik Pulau OCPD Asst Comm Sazalee Adam said the 47-year-old father of the victim was remanded from Wednesday to Saturday (May 21 to 24) while the man's wife was remanded from Thursday to Sunday (May 22 to 25). ACP Sazalee said police received a report from the principal of the Year Six pupil's school on Tuesday (May 20) and subsequently detained the couple. "The incident came to light after the school counsellor noticed that the victim appeared to be in pain," he said here on Friday (May 23). ACP Sazalee said the counsellor interviewed and examined the victim, finding injuries on the child's back. The counsellor then informed the principal, who lodged the report. Couple arrested for allegedly caning 12-year-old girl
BALIK PULAU: Police have detained a married couple to assist in an investigation into an incident in which a young girl was allegedly caned, resulting in injuries and bruises on her back. The incident is believed to have occurred at their home in Sungai Ara, near here. Southwest district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam said police received a report about the incident from the principal of the Year Six pupil's school on Tuesday, before detaining the couple, aged 47 and 49. "The incident came to light after the school counsellor noticed that the 12-year-old pupil appeared to be in pain at school. "Upon questioning and examining her, the counsellor discovered injuries on the victim's back. "Following the discovery, the counsellor informed the school principal, who then lodged a police report," he said. Sazalee said the pupil was subsequently sent to Penang Hospital for further treatment. He said the child revealed she had been repeatedly caned over the past two years, with the most recent incident occurring on Sunday after she mistakenly placed food in a wardrobe. "The girl also claimed that she had previously been locked inside a cage. "We are currently conducting further investigations," he said, adding that police had also confiscated the cane used in the alleged assault. "The couple, who work as a manager and an engineer at two nearby factories, are currently under remand for further investigation," he said. He, however, did not confirm whether the couple in question were the girl's parents. The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. The offence carries a maximum penalty of 20-year imprisonment and a fine of RM50,000.

Southwest district police chief ACP Sazalee Adam said police stopped the 27-year-old man in a Proton Wira as he was behaving suspiciously. 'A search of the car uncovered various tools and items suspected to be linked to cable theft activities, including cable rolls, several cut cable rods, a metal hammer, modified iron tools, a hook and chain lifting set, as well as several mobile phones and identity cards belonging to other individuals,' he said when contacted by Bernama today. He said the man had admitted to being involved in cable theft along with three others who are still at large. Checks also found that the suspect had criminal records involving five drug-related offences and seven other criminal cases. He is now in remand to assist investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

Woman dies after fall from seventh floor of Penang shopping mall car park
KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 — A local woman was found dead after allegedly falling from the seventh floor of a parking structure at a shopping mall in Bayan Lepas last Saturday. South-west District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam said the 29-year-old victim, from Sungai Bakap, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a report in Sinar Harian today. He said the woman is believed to have suffered severe injuries after falling from the southern car park area of the mall. 'Police received information about the incident at 12.47pm from an auxiliary police officer on duty in the area. 'Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim is believed to have fallen from the seventh floor, with her body discovered near the mall's loading bay,' he said in a statement on Tuesday. Sazalee added that the victim's personal belongings were found inside a Honda City believed to belong to her. 'An early witness, a supermarket employee, reported seeing the woman fall from above at around 12.44pm while driving towards the loading bay. 'Investigations also revealed that the victim left her home at around 9am and last contacted her family at noon to say she intended to buy food,' he said. The victim's body was sent to the Forensics Department of Balik Pulau Hospital for a post-mortem. 'The autopsy confirmed the cause of death as multiple injuries consistent with a fall from height,' he said.
