We texted 1,000 Americans about the L.A. protests agitators that have no lives It will only escalate things These people just wanted to destroy suppressing freedom of speech out of control immigrants make America great This is how they responded. By Washington Post staff June 11, 2025 at 8:00 p.m. EDT 4 minutes ago What do Americans think about the protests in Los Angeles and President Donald Trump's deployment of the National Guard and Marines there? The Washington Post and George Mason University's Schar School texted more than 1,000 people Tuesday — including more than 200 California residents — to ask. The survey finds Americans are divided in their views toward L.A. protesters and Trump's decision to send the National Guard and Marines to the city. California residents are more critical of Trump's actions, as are Democrats and political independents. Americans are also mostly negative on Trump's handling of immigration, an issue that was a strength for him early in his presidency. Participants' answers have been lightly edited for clarity and style. Do you support or oppose Trump sending the National Guard and Marines to respond to the L.A. protests? Support 41% Unsure 15% Oppose 44% Deploying the military to crush political protest is classic authoritarian fascism, and must be opposed. As Commanders win, fans warm up to the team name
Winning is the ultimate deodorant. It's also a pretty effective perfume. For the Commanders, a spritz or two of success has caused fans to change their opinion about a name that felt like a best-bad-option placeholder when it was first adopted. A new poll from the Washington Post and the Schar School finds that 53 percent of D.C.-area adults 'like' or 'love' the Commanders name. It's an increase from only 34 percent liking or loving the name as of last year Still, 36 percent of the respondents don't like the name — and nine percent hate it. 'Commanders' replaced 'Washington Football Team,' which became the name after former team owner Daniel Snyder — who'd said he'd all-caps NEVER change the prior name — abruptly dumped it in 2020. Speculation emerges from time to time that the old name could return, especially at a time when certain words that had seemingly cycled out of the lexicon are making a comeback. As the Commanders embark on what apparently will be a new age of consistent contention, support for the current name naturally will grow. Something like getting to a Super Bowl could be the thing that cements the current name.

D.C. Mayor Bowser's approval rating recovers as Trump worries emerge, poll finds
D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser's approval rating recovered from last year's decade-low marks, a Washington Post-Schar School poll finds, as District residents' concerns about crime drop — and worries about President Donald Trump and a GOP-controlled Congress's incursions on the city's autonomy emerge. Fifty-three percent of residents approve of Bowser (D) while 41 percent disapprove according to the poll results, a positive rating that holds on both sides of the Anacostia River. This marks a seven percentage point increase from last year, when she saw her lowest job performance ratings of the decade and the city was starting to recover from a generational spike in violence. Bowser remains less popular than she was in Post polls from 2015 to 2022, when her approval ratings ranged from 58 percent to as high as 67 percent.
