Hamburg enters race to host Olympic Games in Germany

Andy Grote, Hamburg's sports senator, speaks during the presentation of Hamburg's Olympic bid concept. Next year, the DOSB will decide which city or region will bid for the Olympic Games. Daniel Bockwoldt/dpa Hamburg, with the support of the nearby Schleswig-Holstein state, has entered the race to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Germany and presented its concept to German Olympic body the DOSB on Saturday. Together with other politicians, Hamburg mayor Peter Tschentscher handed over the necessary bid documents to the DOSB. Advertisement This is Hamburg's second attempt to host the Games. In 2015, the bid to host the 2024 Games failed after being rejected by citizens in a referendum. "The bids of previous decades consisted of a city being rebuilt to accommodate the Olympic Games. And we reversed this principle," Tschentscher said. The city shouldn't adapt to the Games, "but rather we adapt the Olympic concept to our city," he added. According to the concept, 87% of the planned competition venues are "existing facilities, temporarily usable or already planned construction projects." The plans include a new stadium right next to SV Hamburg's Volkspark football stadium. The new 60,000-seat venue will be used for athletics competitions during the Olympics and later as Hamburg's new home and as a multi-purpose arena. Advertisement "The stadium will be built even if the Olympics don't happen," interior senator Andy Grote said. Berlin, the North Rhine-Westphalia state and Munich are also in the race to host the Olympics in Germany. The DOSB will make a decision in 2026 and referendums are expected to take place. The body also still needs to decide whether it will bid for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Summer Games. Germany last hosted the Olympics in 1972 in Munich. Bids including from Berlin for 2000 and Leipzig for 2012 failed, while Munich's bid for the 2022 Winter Games was also stopped by a referendum.

Germany busts group suspected of procuring visas for wealthy Chinese

Three people were detained in Germany on Wednesday in police raids targeting a suspected people-smuggling network believed to have facilitated the illegal entry of Chinese nationals into the country. Some 750 officers searched 38 properties in nine of Germany's 16 federal states, including Berlin, prosecutors and police said. The three suspects were detained in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, where the group is said to be based, according to police. One of the three has since been remanded in custody. The network is believed to have helped a large number of Chinese nationals enter and stay in Germany, charging up to €230,000 (US$260,790) per case. Prosecutors in Flensburg first launched investigations in October 2023 on suspicion of commercial and organised people's smuggling. The suspects were said to have looked for wealthy Chinese clients online, promising to help them move to Germany via a new accelerated government scheme designed to attract skilled workers.

German minister backs mobile phone ban at primary school

German Education Minister Karin Prien has called for a ban on private mobile phone use in primary schools, amid European debate on children's access to smartphones and social media. "The body of research is becoming increasingly clear: excessive screen time leads to poorer academic performance, reduced social skills and mental health problems," the conservative politician told the newspapers of the Funke Media Group, in remarks seen by dpa. "We need to address this very quickly and very intensively," Prien added. In Germany, the country's federal states are responsible for issues relating to education, including the handling of mobile phones in schools. Prien, who was previously the education minister of the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein has clear views, however. "Private mobile phone use should be banned in primary schools. In secondary schools, age-appropriate rules should be established wherever possible," she said. The issue is currently being examined in Germany at state level. Berlin will support the process by providing the scientific basis, Prien added. "From my experience, it is about largely, but age-appropriately, banning private mobile phone use in schools," she said. Experience showed that schools and most parents are grateful for clear, uniform guidelines. Earlier in the week, EU youth and education ministers considered a range of measures to curb the risks to young people from excessive smartphone use.
