Hamburg, with the support of the nearby Schleswig-Holstein state, has entered the race to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Germany and presented its concept to German Olympic body the DOSB on Saturday.
Together with other politicians, Hamburg mayor Peter Tschentscher handed over the necessary bid documents to the DOSB.

This is Hamburg's second attempt to host the Games. In 2015, the bid to host the 2024 Games failed after being rejected by citizens in a referendum.
"The bids of previous decades consisted of a city being rebuilt to accommodate the Olympic Games. And we reversed this principle," Tschentscher said.
The city shouldn't adapt to the Games, "but rather we adapt the Olympic concept to our city," he added.
According to the concept, 87% of the planned competition venues are "existing facilities, temporarily usable or already planned construction projects."
The plans include a new stadium right next to SV Hamburg's Volkspark football stadium. The new 60,000-seat venue will be used for athletics competitions during the Olympics and later as Hamburg's new home and as a multi-purpose arena.

"The stadium will be built even if the Olympics don't happen," interior senator Andy Grote said.
Berlin, the North Rhine-Westphalia state and Munich are also in the race to host the Olympics in Germany. The DOSB will make a decision in 2026 and referendums are expected to take place.
The body also still needs to decide whether it will bid for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Summer Games.
Germany last hosted the Olympics in 1972 in Munich. Bids including from Berlin for 2000 and Leipzig for 2012 failed, while Munich's bid for the 2022 Winter Games was also stopped by a referendum.

Rapids sign US national team midfielder Paxten Aaronson from Eintracht Frankfurt on 5-year deal

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado Rapids have brought in U.S. Men's National Team midfielder Paxten Aaronson from Germany's Eintracht Frankfurt on a five-year deal that runs through 2030. The Rapids announced the deal Thursday. The squad did not release terms of the transfer, but said the fee was a club record. Aaronson will take a designated player slot on Colorado's roster. It's a big addition for the Rapids, who are currently in seventh place in the Western Conference. Aaronson, who turns 22 next Tuesday, spent the 2024-25 season on loan at FC Utrecht in the Netherlands' Eredivisie. He had nine goals and six assists in 37 league games. 'He has proven himself in Europe, gained valuable experience on the international stage with the U.S. Men's National Team, and brings a dynamic, creative presence to our midfield,' Rapids president Pádraig Smith said in a statement. "He is the exact type of young, hungry player we want to build around at this club, and we are delighted to welcome him to Colorado as we strengthen a team capable of competing at the highest level.' Aaronson was a member of the U.S. team that captured the 2023–24 CONCACAF Nations League and made it to the final of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He also was with the squad at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 2023, and trained with the team this summer. 'Paxten has demonstrated his potential both in pre-season and in his appearances for us,' Timmo Hardung, the sporting director for Eintracht Frankfurt, said in a statement. "With a view to the 2026 World Cup, which is taking place in his home country, among others, he made the request to take his next step at the Colorado Rapids. We wish Paxten all the best and lots of success for his future.' Before Eintracht, he played for the Philadelphia Union, the team where he launched his professional career by signing a homegrown-player contract in August 2020. ___

Germany to ease burden on electricity consumers from 2026

German electricity consumer prices are set to ease next year due to a €6.5 billion ($7.55 billion) government subsidy to finance transmission costs, sources in the Economics Ministry said on Thursday. The aim is to soften the impact of network charges on electricity consumers, the sources said, adding that the ministry has introduced a draft bill for internal government consultation. Structurally high electricity prices are a significant challenge for Germany's embattled economy and a burden on consumers. The subsidy is to be financed from a special government fund for climate and energy transformation. The subsidy for transmission network costs will now be implemented for the year 2026, with further relief in future years to be funded to the tune of €6.5 billion from the government pot, according to the ministerial sources. Details of how the relief will be passed on to consumers are still to be discussed by the conservative-led government coalition under Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The coalition agreement states that the goal is to permanently cap network charges. The reduction of network charges is part of a package of government measures. The Cabinet has already set plans in motion to relieve gas customers. Specifically, companies and consumers are to be exempted from the cost of building up gas reservoirs, the so-called gas storage levy. There are also proposals to make an electricity tax reduction for the manufacturing industry, agreed earlier this year, permanent from 2026. However, a reduction in electricity taxes for all, as pledged in the new government's coalition agreement, is not to come for now. The decision to limit the tax reduction to industry, due to budgetary constraints, sparked widespread criticism. Network charges, which help finance the costly expansion of electricity networks, have risen significantly as a component of the electricity price. The charges are incurred for the use of the electricity transmission network. They are then passed on to consumers by energy suppliers. The subsidy for transmission network costs is intended to dampen the increase in network charges related to the transition to green energy sources, according to the draft bill. "The relief must be passed on to customers through the network operators," Economic Affairs Minister Katherina Reiche told dpa last month of the planned measure. "My clear expectation of the industry is: The relief must reach the customer." Solve the daily Crossword

Borussia Dortmund interested in signing Chelsea's Aaron Anselmino on loan

Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino on loan. The Athletic reported in the Transfer DealSheet that Anselmino had offers from Champions League and Europa League clubs outside the United Kingdom but will not go to Strasbourg, Chelsea's sister club. Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed that a loan move for Anselmino was being planned when asked by The Athletic at a press conference on Thursday. The club are prepared to let the 20-year-old go despite the anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered by Levi Colwill that will rule him out for several months. Advertisement 'He is a good player but he needs to play games, he needs to go (on loan) and he is another player that is waiting for a solution, said Maresca.' Anselmino joined the London club from Boca Juniors in August 2024 for a fee in the region of £17million. He went immediately back on loan to his boyhood club but was recalled by Chelsea in January. The Argentinean defender was training with the first team and remained with the side until the end of the season but only played twice, once with the Under-21 side and once as a substitute during the Club World Cup which they won. He has had three hamstring injuries over the past two seasons which has impacted his playing time, the most significant of which came in February after his return to Stamford Bridge. Anselmino made 23 senior appearances for Boca Juniors, scoring twice and registering three assists. If a move to Dortmund goes through, he would become the second Chelsea loanee to join the German club this year. Midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka spent the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan at Dortmund, where he made 17 appearances. His Chelsea future remains uncertain, with the club preferring a permanent sale rather than another loan switch. Chelsea return to action with a visit to West Ham United on Friday, while Dortmund take on St. Pauli in their first Bundesliga game of the season on Saturday.
