Planning permission sought to build two storey building at Wexford school

Gorey Guardian Today at 08:00 Gorey Central School in north Wexford is seeking permission to build a two storey modular school building, providing much needed classrooms for its displaced classes. The proposed development includes three mainstream classrooms, three SET rooms with a passenger lift, WCs and associated plant space as well as two soft play areas, the revision of four car park spaces to provide three car park spaces with one additional accessible parking bay with an EV charging point and all associated site development works. Arthur Gibney & Partner's is acting as agents on behalf of the Board of Management of Gorey Central School regarding this application. The application site is the premises of Gorey Central School and extends to 6,740m2. The school is located on the southern side of Charlotte Row/Main Street, Gorey and currently includes the main school building, an additional existing building to the front of the site which houses the Giant Steps Montessori. The building to the front of the site, housing the Giant Steps Montessori, is a protected structure but the proposed works do not interfere with it. Additionally, the proposed new building position creates an open play area within a formed quad, making it easier for the school to manage and reduce potential flight risk from the play space. The proposal includes the removal and reinstatement of the two soft play areas currently in the location of the proposed modular building, and allowing an increase to 173m2 due to the proposed new layout. The Board of Management of Gorey Central School previously sought planning permission for the school on numerous occasions. The most recent planning application was granted in 2019 for a standalone single storey extension containing one classroom and associated accommodation. The existing soft play areas will be removed and new soft-play will be installed at a different location, a grass playing field, tarmac play areas, and a car park. The car parking layout is proposed to revise four standard car parking spaces to facilitate the installation of three standard car parking spaces and one new accessible parking bay with an EV charging point. The proposed modular building has been designed in accordance with the Building Regulations and the Department of Education's School Design Guide, to accommodate the current and future needs of Gorey Central School. The building has been designed to house the replacement of two classrooms and two SET rooms which were previously in the main building but recently reconfigured to create SEN classrooms and an additional mainstream classroom and SET room. In addition to the mainstream classrooms and SET rooms the building will provide a passenger lift, cleaners' store, a UAWC on both floors, a store, as well as a plant room on both floors.
