Elgin News Digest: Park district adds pre-concert demos to summer concerts; U-46's production of ‘Man of La Mancha' opens Thursday
Dundee Township Park District will offer demonstrations of two of the programs it offers prior to its 7 p.m. Tuesday summer concerts in July. Each will start at 6 p.m. and last 45 minutes. Schaumburg Road. More than 75 students and employees from across the district's five high schools make up the cast, musicians and technical crew for the musical, according to a U-46 newsletter. The Janus Theatre Company opens its 27th season with 'The Ibsen Project: Hedda,' running Friday through Sunday, June 27-29, at the Elgin Arts Showcase, 164 Division St. Actors will perform Ibsen's 'Hedda Gabler' with scripts in hand, according to the Janus website. For an added twist, each performance will feature a different translation of the Norwegian playwright's work. The production is part of this year's 'Season of Outsiders' and features classic stories from the past brought to life for today's audiences, the website said. U-46 TalentFest 2025 takes stage at Hemmens on March 19 School District U-46 will host TalentFest 2025 from 7 to 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at The Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. Students from Bartlett, Elgin, Larkin, South Elgin and Streamwood high schools will compete for cash prizes and a traveling trophy to be displayed at the winning school, according to a post on the city of Elgin website. Audience members will vote on which performers make it to the finals and a panel of judges will choose first-, second- and third-place acts. Sheriff, Carpentersville PD stepping up St. Patrick's patrols The Kane County Sheriff's Office and Carpentersville Police Department are among the police agencies teaming up with the Illinois State Police for a St. Patrick's Day weekend law enforcement campaign. From Friday through Monday, March 14-17, there will be increased enforcement of alcohol- and cannabis driving laws as well as seat belt enforcement, according to news releases. Speeding, distracted driving and traffic laws will be strictly enforced, the releases said. St. Patrick's Day enforcement campaigns are funded with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant money administered by Illinois Department of Transportation.

Elgin Public Museum offering art, history sessions for kids The Elgin Public Museum has partnered with Side Street Studio Arts to offer youth classes in art and history from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, March 8-29, at the museum in Lords Park. During each session, students will tour one of the museum's exhibits to learn about history, anthropology and zoology, according to the class webpage. Each tour will be followed by art activities inspired by the day's exhibit. Students ages 7 to 11 will do craft projects and those 12 to 17 will work on drawings and sketches. The class schedule focuses on birds March 8, insects and spiders on March 15, Native American beadwork on March 22 and the spring thaw on March 29.
