Chandigarh education dept launches WhatsApp communication channel for schools

The Department of School Education, UT Chandigarh, has launched an official WhatsApp communication channel, connecting school heads, teachers, cluster coordinators, and administrators across the city on a unified digital platform. This initiative aligns with the department's broader digital transformation agenda, anchored by the implementation of the School Management Information System (SMIS), and marks a significant shift toward agile, transparent, and data-driven administration. As per H Brar, director, School Education, Chandigarh, the channel will facilitate a two-way communication between the department and schools, sharing training resources and technical guidance, cutting down office delays, fostering transparent decision-making, and creating a digitally connected education ecosystem. Education Secretary Prerna Puri said the department is moving toward an integrated, tech-enabled governance framework. 'We are not merely digitising existing systems, we are reimagining the way schools function, and this channel is a step toward an education system that is transparent, connected, and capable of real-time responsiveness,' she said. Upcoming SMIS milestones include completion of mapping modules, 100% digital attendance implementation from August 1 and phased rollout of automated features, including report cards and staff mapping. The department has issued guidelines for the responsible use of the channel, which is an official communication platform. Chandigarh is among the first UTs to adopt such a digitally inclusive, real-time communication framework, enabling schools to respond swiftly to dynamic needs, reduce paperwork, and focus on quality education. 'It will improve administrative efficiency but also empower schools to make informed, student-centric decisions,' said Brar.

UT rolls out mgmt info system to digitise school operations

Chandigarh: The UT department of school education, has started implementing the School Management Information System (SMIS) in government schools to digitise day-to-day academic, administrative, and financial operations. Integrated with UDISE+, the SMIS synchronises teacher and student data daily and assigns unique login credentials for access to various role-based modules. The system is structured around four types of logins — administrator, school, teacher and student — each with a specific set of functions. At the administrator level, the education department can configure fee structures, sets academic streams, assigns subjects to classes, maps sanctioned posts, and manages school login credentials. Data based on class, social category, or gender can also be set up here. Circulars and system-wide reports are generated through the admin panel. School principals will access the system through a school login to manage teacher and student registrations, create login accounts, mark teacher attendance, and assign teachers to subjects and classes. They can also issue School Leaving Certificates and bonafide documents, and view school-level reports related to enrolment, attendance, and fee status. The system sends automated SMS alerts to parents of absentees. Teachers cam also verify fee details auto-calculated by the system and record fee collection, whether online or manual. Subject-wise result entry and report card generation will also be carried out through teacher logins. Students, using their login IDs, can view attendance and fee status, pay fees online, and apply for certificates. They can access their academic records, including downloadable report cards once the module goes live. A cluster-level orientation session for master trainers was conducted on July 18 to guide implementation. A WhatsApp group has also been created to resolve operational queries, with many teachers already onboarded. Principals have been asked to ensure full module completion within the week. The Education Department has not indicated any delay or change in the rollout timeline.
