Thousands of Edmonton's student safety patrollers celebrated at annual picnic

Students at the AMA School Safety Patrollers Appreciation Event at Edmonton's Rundle Park on June 6, 2025. (CTV News Edmonton) More than 3,000 local students took part in the annual AMA School Safety Patrollers Appreciation Event at Rundle Park on Friday. The event celebrates Grade 5 students who volunteer as AMA Safety Patrollers, helping other students cross the streets near schools safely. 'They are vital to traffic safety,' Const. Cassandra Grant of the Edmonton Police Service said. 'We really need them to do their job that they're doing every day. It helps us keep the streets safe and keeps all of their classmates safe as well.' 'If there's kids behind you, make sure you put your arm out so they won't go. And you need to make sure all cars stop by pushing the button before you can tell them to proceed,' patroller Aemilia Folgizan said of the job. 'You get to learn how to be a good leader.' The school patrol program has been operated by AMA since 1983. With files from CTV News Edmonton's Amanda Anderson

Ottawa's public-school board to discuss relationship with police

The OCDSB says it remains hopeful a deal can still be reached before Wednesday. The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board will discuss the current and future relationship between the city's largest school board and police this evening, as the Ontario government proposes legislation to require officers in schools. Trustees will vote tonight on a motion from Trustee Donna Blackburn, which calls on staff to prepare a report on the 'current status' of the OCDSB's relationship with the Ottawa Police Service for the fall. The motion also recommends the director of education 'continue to engage' with police to establish 'standards of practice that allow for police support to schools.' Trustees voted in 2021 to end the School Resource Officer Program, with the board moving to an 'emergency response-based relationship with police.' In January, the Ottawa Police Service introduced a new program that increases access to resources and supports for schools and provides proactive engagement for officers. According to police, the new Community Youth Officers program includes: Dedicated support: Schools now have direct access to Community Unit Officers. Proactive Engagement: Police say Community Youth Unit officers will provide guidance, build relationships with students and staff, and support initiatives such as educational presentations and lockdown practices Streamlined Communications: Clearly defined reporting protocols to 'ensure efficient coordination between school and OPS,' police say. Last week, the Ontario government introduced the Supporting Children and Students Act, which includes requiring school boards to implement School Resource Officer programs where they are offered by local police services.

Court of Appeals denies Oxford High School shooter's attempt to appeal life sentence

The Michigan Court of Appeals has denied Ethan Crumbley's request to appeal his sentencing, upholding his life sentence without the possibility of parole. The decision was made by a three-judge panel on Tuesday, May 6. The court cited a "lack of merit in the grounds presented" and also rejected Crumbley's motion to remand the case, which sought to have it sent back to a lower court for further review. Crumbley, who was 15 at the time of the November 2021 Oxford school shooting, pleaded guilty to all charges in 2022. In December 2024, an Oakland County judge denied his attempt to withdraw his guilty plea and reconsider his sentence. More: James Crumbley returns to court: I deserve a new trial, too After the May 6 decision, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald issued a statement supporting the ruling and highlighting the severity of the crimes committed by Crumbley. 'This ruling, first and foremost, reaffirms basic truths: On November 30, 2021, the shooter murdered Madisyn Baldwin, Tate Myre, Hana St. Juliana, and Justin Shilling, he wounded seven others, and he terrorized an entire community," McDonald said. "The shooter had his day in court. A judge weighed the severity of his crimes and rendered a fair sentence." She also pointed out that the tragedy could have been prevented, noting that both Crumbley and his parents had multiple opportunities to stop the shooting. 'As Judge Kwame Rowe said at sentencing, the shooter had multiple opportunities to make different decisions. He did not,' McDonald added. 'As a society, we must start treating gun violence as the public health crisis that it is.' Attorneys for Crumbley could not immediately be reached. Teen busted with loaded gun in melee inside NYC playground that ended with good Samaritan slashed: sources

A 14-year-old boy was busted with a loaded gun during a heated clash inside a Queens playground Wednesday afternoon — and a good Samaritan who stepped in to stop the melee was slashed by another attacker, cops and sources said. The teen flashed a gun as he fought with another youngster inside Hollis Playground at 204th Street and Hollis Avenue in Queens Village around 3:40 p.m., cops said. A good Samaritan spotted the boys fighting and tried to stop them — even notifying School Safety officers from I.S. 192, a public middle school down the block, police said. At some point, a third suspect who wasn't involved in the initial brawl slashed the Samaritan on the back, cops said. That person ran off, but the gun-wielding teen was taken into custody by the School Safety officers, police said. Charges were not immediately filed. The incident followed a burst of violence involving teens both inside and outside of high schools late last month. A 16-year-old boy was stabbed and wounded across from John F. Kennedy High School on Terrace View Avenue in the Marble Hill section of the Bronx on Feb. 26, police said. A day earlier, a 17-year-old boy was busted with a loaded gun stashed in his backpack after getting into a fight with another student inside the Community School for Social Justice on East 140th Street in Mott Haven, cops and sources said.
