SRO Productions presents ‘A New Brain'

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A semi-autobiographical musical that explores the healing powers of art and music is coming to the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage on Friday. SRO Productions is ending its season with William Finn's 'A New Brain.' The musical addresses Finn's personal experience with a life-threatening brain tumor and his subsequent recovery. Based loosely on Finn's own life, the story follows Gordon Michael Schwinn, a frustrated composer for a children's TV show, as he is diagnosed with a severe brain condition. The show discusses themes of mortality and fear while celebrating life, love, and friendship. Director Douglas Harrington emphasizes the importance of taking care of your mind and body. He encourages audience members not to compare their journey to someone else's. 'One of the biggest takeaways from the show, that I hope people take away, is that where you are in life is the right place to be right now. Each person has a different path,' said Harrington. A New Brain will have a two-weekend run. Show times are at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets start at $23. Celebrate Pride Month with an evening of laughter at Schorr Family Firehouse Stage

(WIVT/WBGH) – A trio of comedians is coming to the Schorr Family Fire House Stage on Friday to share some laughs and celebrate Pride Month. Julia Scotti and Poppy Champlin are headlining the theatre's Pride Comedy Show, along with fellow comedian Danny McWilliams. The veteran comics all identify with the LGBTQ+ community, breaking down several barriers in the industry. Scotti was the first out transgender comedian to perform on national television and Champlin tours the country with her production 'Queer Queens of Qomedy.' McWilliams, a New York City favorite, is known for his work with Funny Gay Males. Scotti says good comedy has nothing to do with gender or sexual orientation, what matters is if you're funny. 'The reason I don't come out until about ten, fifteen minutes into my act is because the audience is forming an opinion of me as a human being, as a comic. I mentioned earlier the people who suddenly get that look on their face like 'Oh!'. And my question to them is, what's changed? I'm the same person you liked prior to 30 seconds ago before you knew I was trans,' said Scotti. 'I think comedy is playing. And when you're playing as children, when you're playing, you're not thinking, you're not judging, you're not nothing. You're all equal. And that's what I like to bring to the comedy scene is we're all equal, we're all playing,' said Champlin. The Pride Comedy Show takes place at 7 p.m. It may not be suitable for those under 18. Tickets are $27. To purchase, visit The Schorr Family Firehouse Stage is located at 48 Willow Street in Johnson City. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
