Joe Milton III Embracing His New Opportunity with Dallas Cowboys
Joe Milton III Embracing His New Opportunity with Dallas Cowboys originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Joe Milton III earlier this offseason with the hope he could develop and serve as backup for franchise quarterback Dak Prescott. Advertisement So far, so good ... as Mike Fisher of reports that the 6-6 second-year prospect with the cannon arm took second-team reps this week at OTAs. As NFL fans know, Milton impressed during his one regular-season appearance with the New England Patriots as a rookie last season. In New England's Week 18 win over the Buffalo Bills this past January, Milton completed 22-of-29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a score. "I went in there and did what the play caller and head coach wanted me to do, and that's win the game," Milton said. "I didn't know what was going to happen. It was the last game of the season. I was just going off happy. I went out with a win in my first game ever in the NFL. That's pretty much all I was thinking about, until two months later and boom, I'm here." Advertisement While speaking to reporters on Thursday, the Florida native spoke about 'looking for a fresh start' with the Cowboys after just one season with the Patriots. "It did catch me by surprise," Milton said about the trade. "Was I surprised? Yes. I woke up around 7:00 a.m., woke up to a call and knew I was getting traded. Only thing I did at that moment was thank God. I'm blessed. Coming here was a blessing. I didn't know it was going to be here. My agent said there were multiple teams that called. I didn't know where I was going to end up. I was just thankful to go somewhere." To many in Cowboys Nation, this was less of a surprise, as Dallas' rumored interest was well known. And now that "Bazooka Joe'' is getting to know his way around The Star? He's got four reasons to view the move as a "blessing,'' as he lists 1) the warm weather, 2) an indoor stadium, 3) "It's America's Team!'' and 4) the opportunity to learn from Prescott. Advertisement With the Cowboys, Milton plans to continue honing his skills as an NFL quarterback as he embraces his new environment and teammates. ... with all parties hoping for more "blessings.'' Time's ticking for Cowboys to decide if they need to spend $31M in cap space
Time's ticking for Cowboys to decide if they need to spend $31M in cap space With OTAs resuming on Wednesday, the staff has to take early evidence into account at key battle stations. Cowboys coaches ready to get back to it Opinions are always changing in the NFL. If a coaching staff is flexible in their thought process, each phase of the offseason that provides them with new information allows them to adjust the course they've charted. New Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer and his new staff are in the middle of just such an opportunity. Following the 2025 NFL draft, Schotty had a chance to evaluate his new class of nine prospects, plus UDFAs and a couple other young players during rookie minicamp. That was followed by a chance to see the core of his team in the first Organized Team Activities last week, when the full roster was able to participate in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills for the first time in 2025. That intel, seeing where the rookies fit in with the vets, a first look at free agent and trade acquisitions and an introduction of returning players to their new coaches was vital. And now after several days off, the coaching staff has hopefully ingested that information and adjusted their expectations as Round 2 of OTAs is set to begin on Wednesday. The Cowboys have several questions about their roster and depth chart. As of now, there's no perfect solution at nickel corner or nose tackle the team should feel comfortable with. The team has $32 million in cap space, sixth-most in the NFL. They need to br gathering data points on where they may want to spend that. There's a ton of competition for snaps at several positions, and others where the team could be waiting on someone to emerge to fill a necessary role. It's those evals that are hopefully being minded at the moment. Progress from one OTA to another is important, but the staff also has to be prepared to admit when a group is too far away from being competitive and changes need to be made. The bottom of the roster is always subject to churn, and the Cowboys will need to consider spending some of their bounty of cap space to bring in veterans who may be able to help. All 32 teams are undergoing the same process, and while aged veterans may want to avoid the offseason before deciding on their new homes, the Cowboys should absolutely be having conversations with those player's agents to start to grease the wheels. Cowboys Source Reveals Signing George Pickens Odds
The Dallas Cowboys trading for George Pickens has been one of the largest stories off the NFL offseason, as an exciting talent now pairs with All-Pros Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb to create one of the league's most promising quarterback-receiver trios. Cowboys Nation cannot wait for the 2025 season to get underway to see how this aerial attack is utilized by first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Advertisement This excitement about the acquisition of Pickens has already posed questions about the 24 year old's future with the franchise. Pickens, drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft, is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, making him eligible for an extension. Eager fans have rumored the idea of the Cowboys extending Pickens' contract before he even takes a snap this season ... but we believe there are far too many factors at risk to throw money and commitment into a new player so soon. The receiver has made a name for himself as an electrifying deep-ball receiver, but has also built a poor reputation through a history of fines for on-field penalties and off-the-field behavioral issues. Advertisement Simply put, Pickens will have to clean up this act if he wants to earn a long-term contract with the Cowboys - or any team for that matter. How well he performs on the field should also be a huge determining factor on the price of his next deal. But amid speculation that maybe Dallas should step up now and do a deal? Our Mike Fisher, quoting a source, is shutting that down. "I don't know where those sort of reports come from,'' Fish said on Monday from inside OTAs. "It's not what bet-on-himself Pickens wants, and in terms of proactivity before those leaves fall, as Jerry Jones likes to say, it's not what this franchise does.'' Advertisement For Dallas and Pickens, this is not a bad thing. The Cowboys will see how things work out on the field, notice how Pickens fits into the Schotty's locker room culture, and still have plenty of time to adjust the budget if the front office chooses they want to re-sign him. Pickens will now enter a contract year, which we expect to light a motivational fire in his belly. He must work to earn respect, trust, and a contributing role on the field to encourage his re-signing. If things don't work out this smoothly? There are still multiple avenues this situation could travel down ... and they aren't all bad news. Advertisement For now? It's good news that George Pickens plays for the Dallas Cowboys. More good news is that anything beyond the 2025 season has plenty of time to figure itself out. Nobody will be rushing that process with a pre-season contract extension. Micah Parsons explains why he showed up to Cowboys' voluntary workouts despite no contract extension
Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons doesn't normally attend the team's voluntary offseason workouts. So it was a big deal when Parsons, who is seeking a contract extension, decided this was the year to show up during the event. Parsons explained his presence at offseason workouts Tuesday, praising new Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer in the process, per the team's website. "Everyone's got a different perspective but, talking to Schotty, and [him] telling me how important it is for me to be there, and what he's trying to prove and show to the team — I just thought it was important. One, for me and my relationship with our new head coach to understand where he's coming from and help him in any way I can to go on this run. Schotty's showed up to my event, and Schotty's been around to try and build relationships. So I feel like we're at the point where if he asks for me to come in for the leadership aspect, and to be around the guys, and show face, that's something I wanna do for my coach. "I mean, for me, it's not really like walking the walk. It's just me. Like I always said, I've wanted to be a Cowboy and being here, I feel like it's really just being me. I've been as real as possible since I've been here." The Cowboys are in transition after parting ways with head coach Mike McCarthy in the offseason. Schottenheimer, who served as the team's offensive coordinator the past two seasons, was named the Cowboys' new head coach in January. As part of that hiring, the Cowboys replaced multiple coaches on staff, including the team's defensive coordinator. Mike Zimmer was replaced by former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus for the 2025 season. Given all that, Parsons felt it was best that he be present when the team met in the offseason. While he won't do any on-field work while he waits for a new deal, Parsons can use this time to learn Eberflus' new defense. A new contract is probably on the way. Though nothing has been signed yet, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones implied both sides made progress in the offseason. It sounds like there's still work do on that end, but Parsons showing up to voluntary workouts for the first time is probably a good sign that he sees himself staying in Dallas for the foreseeable future.

Cowboys Coach's 9-Word Statement Says It All
Listening to Dallas Cowboys' head coach Brian Schottenheimer all offseason, we know that he wants to change the culture. That is a big dream, but he's not just talking the talk; he's walking the walk. We've heard about all the "little" things he's done so far, such as buying everyone in the facility Whataburger and sending champagne to Osa Odighizuwa's table at dinner after he signed his new contract. Advertisement It's not a facade - it's real, and players buy into that. Leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft, Mike Fisher reported Schottenheimer was "pounding the table" for high-character players as part of his efforts to construct an improved culture at The Star. Said Schotty on that subject in the days before the draft: "We're looking for those world‑class competitors - the guys who come in, work hard, and are passionate about what they do. It really is a puzzle you're trying to fit together, and to me, (physical) traits are just one piece of that puzzle." Then we get to the draft, and the players the Cowboys selected have embodied the type of people he wants in the building. He wants leaders, people who thrive on making each person better around them, ones who build relationships with each other and most importantly, love football. Advertisement Tyler Booker was a "legendary locker-room leader '' (as Fisher puts it) at Alabama. Donovan Ezeiruaku a leader at Boston College. And it isn't just the top-end draft picks that Schotty has taken in that mold. Shemar James was a captain at Florida. Seventh-round draft pick Phil Mafah was a team captain at Clemson. Want more? Per the Star-Telegram, during COVID, Jaydon Blue organized workouts during his high school recruitment. And Shavon Revel Jr. stuck with East Carolina despite six-figure NIL offers to move because of loyalty. The coach is getting the right type of people in the building. Yes, talent matters, but as we have heard, Schotty and the rest of the coaches and front office, so too does the makeup of the person. "I'm a pretty chill guy," Mafah said. "I love doing Legos, love hanging out, learning the piano, really hanging out with family. Love going outdoors in nature and just love people. I'm a people person." Dallas Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones, head coach Brian Schottenheimer, and owner Jerry JonesTim Heitman-Imagn Images Even in Mafah's answer right there. A "people person." Advertisement That's it. That is what Schottenheimer's building here. A tough, hard, physical competitive football team, but it's also a family at The Star. It is well-known that when a player "loves" playing for his coach, maybe he puts in a little more effort, and that three-yard run, turns into a four-yard gain. All of those things matter. Every yard matters in football, and for Schottenheimer, yes, he values the talent in the building, but that doesn't overshadow the type of people coming into The Star either. The Cowboys' 2025 roster will be filled with tough, gritty players who are leaders and value the person alongside them. Advertisement Said the coach: 'We're building a team. We're not just collecting talent.' And that, my friends, is a rock-solid foundation on which to begin this "new era" of Cowboys football under Brian Schottenheimer.
