Richmond weekend guide: Brad Paisley and free ice cream

What a weekend for live music in Richmond, just days after Dave Matthews Band popped over to hang out. Let's get into it. Thursday, July 17 🧘‍♀️ Do a little sunrise community yoga with One Drop Yoga's Michelle Lee Landon at the Virginia War Memorial. 6-7am. Pay what you can. 🤠 Country music star Brad Paisley is playing at the Amphitheater. 7:30pm. Tickets start at $42 for the lawn. 🏳️‍🌈 The Park RVA by Scott's Addition has LGBTQ+ music bingo with themed playlists and prizes. 7pm. Free. Friday, July 18 🤼‍♀️ Watch some live pro wrestling with a beer at Parlay Bar & Lounge in Scott's Addition. 6-10pm. $23.18. 😂 The second installment of Chuckle Smugglers standup showcase of local comics is back at Black Iris. 8pm and $8. 🥩 The Broadberry has a "Gaga Dance Party" in honor of Lady Gaga, or as the venue describes it: "A reason to defrost your meat suit." 9pm. Tickets start at $25. Saturday, July 19 🎈 The "Trying to Adult RVA" club is having its third annual water-balloon fight at Main Line Brewery. All you have to do is fill your balloons and be a member. 2pm. $5. 🎤 The Tin Pan has a tribute to Fantasia and Ledisi. We'd love to hear them sing "Free Yourself." Shows start at 6pm. $43.17. 🎶 Plunky & Oneness, founded by Richmonder James "Plunky" Branch, is performing at Dogwood Dell's Festival of the Arts. 8pm. Free. 👩🏼‍🎤 If you loved the '80s, you'll love this: A Flock of Seagulls will be at The National, likely playing their iconic song about running all night and day. 8pm. Tickets start at $45. 🏟️ If that's not your thing, Jason Isbell (who has a song that mentions Richmond) and the 400 Unit are at the Amphitheater. 7pm. Tickets start at $30. 🏴‍☠️ And if all else fails, The Hof has a "River City Pirate Ball," tied to how pirates once navigated the James River. There will, in fact, be pirate-themed cocktails. 8pm-1am. $23.18. Sunday, July 20 🍦 It's National Ice Cream Day and Gelati Celesti is celebrating by handing out free scoops from 12:01am to 1am on Sunday morning (aka right after midnight on Saturday) at all 10 of their shops.

How to be a true Richmonder when you've just moved here

Moving here is the first step, but it doesn't make you a Richmonder just yet. Why it matters: Richmonders like to insist you notch certain experiences in this city before claiming it, and that takes time. Zoom in: Here's a cheat sheet to get you started. ⏰ Take the time to learn the city's complicated past, the people who've long been here and how both have shaped the present. 🤬 Get pissed at the city and maybe tweet about it. You'll find like-minded people and about five more issues to be annoyed about within the hour. 💀 Be funny in a crisis. Nothing bonds us more than collectively meme'ing our way through not having running water for three days. 💅🏼 Casually drop "That's so Richmond" in a conversation. No one ever asks follow-ups. They'll just nod because there's a 99% chance whatever you're referring to really is "so Richmond." 🚗 Get towed by Siebert's, and try (and fail) to talk them into not towing you. 🌉 Cross the bridge (all of them). 🔥 Roast Scott's Addition, even if you live there. 🍗 Find a chicken bone on the sidewalk. 💪🏼 Go to Black Rabbit for a flash tattoo so you can then stop anyone you see who looks like they got their tattoo done by the same person. ⚠️ Learn to drive down the small two-way side streets without panicking that both cars won't fit.
