Unexpected Steelers player grabs attention amid WR2 concerns

The post Unexpected Steelers player grabs attention amid WR2 concerns appeared first on ClutchPoints. When the Pittsburgh Steelers traded a king's ransom for DK Metcalf, fans had a pretty good idea who would be the team's WR1 for the foreseeable future, but after shipping away George Pickens, who would be his running mate and number two target for new quarterback Aaron Rodgers? Well, while the Steelers do have a number of options, the favorite to secure that coveted WR2 spot may actually be one of the least likely, as 5-foot-9 journeyman Scotty Miller is coming in hot heading into the preseason, according to Mike DeFabo of The Athletic. 'The most noticeable receiver not named Metcalf? Scotty Miller. The 28-year-old, 5-foot-9 receiver had another strong day Sunday, winning several two-on-two reps during a competitive receivers-on-DBs period,' DeFabo wrote for The Athletic. 'While that's good news for Miller, it's not so much for an offense that was counting upon development from Calvin Austin III and Roman Wilson. On Sunday, Rodgers looked for Wilson on a corner route. The uncatchable ball skipped well in front of the receiver. Either the throw was errant, or they weren't on the same page. It was a similar story last week, when Rodgers looked for Wilson along the sideline and threw it well out of bounds. After that misfire, Rodgers walked Wilson through how to run his route the way the QB wants. Meanwhile, Austin missed his second consecutive practice with an injury. If defenses game plan to shut down Metcalf, someone needs to step up and start forming chemistry with Rodgers.' Initially drafted in the sixth round out of Bowling Green by the Buccaneers, Miller won a Super Bowl in Tampa Bay before moving to Atlanta in 2023, when he played under future Steelers OC Arthur Smith. While Miller wasn't much of a force in 2024, catching just five of his nine targets in 13 games with just one start, he is a veteran pass catcher with deceptive speed and a knack for making things happen out of the slot. Considering Rodgers' mobility at this stage of the game, who knows? Maybe Miller will have a breakout season in his seventh NFL campaign. Don't Sleep on Steelers WR Scotty Miller: ‘He Knows All the Spots'

UNITY TWP, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers could bolster their wide receiver corps prior to the start of the regular season, but wide receiver Scotty Miller has made a case at training camp that he could be a reliable option for the club this season. 'I pride myself on, for one, just being able to do what I (am asked) to do,' Miller said. 'Just the receiver position, just being able to play all the different spots, being able to play the slot, being able to go outside and beat bigger corners one on one, and then just being able to help on special teams as well. So I try to just be versatile and try to help the team any way I can.' Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also gave Miller a ringing endorsement. 'He knows all the spots,' Tomlin said. 'He's highly conditioned. He's very competitive. He's a been-there, done-that guy, and so there's a lot of value in his presence.' Miller, 27, spent the 2024 season with the Steelers, recording five catches for 69 yards in 13 games. The 5-foot-9, 179-pound wide receiver has the ability to take the top off the defense, running a 4.36-second 40-yard dash and a 4.02-second short shuttle at his pro day. Before signing with Atlanta in 2023, Miller spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who selected him out of Bowling Green in the sixth round (No. 208 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played in 10 games and made two starts as a rookie in 2019, and saw his workload increase in 2020, when he started five games, played in all 16 and caught 33 passes for a career-high 501 yards and two touchdowns. In 2020, Miller was catching passes from the greatest quarterback in NFL history in Tom Brady. He sees a lot of similarities in Aaron Rodgers, who's also one of the most decorated QB in league history. 'They're similar in that way,' Miller said. 'You don't get to where they are without being extremely detail-oriented.' Miller had a key 39-yard touchdown reception against the Green Bay Packers in the 2020 NFC Championship game. The play occurred right before halftime, with Brady finding Miller on a go route in the end zone to extend Tampa Bay's lead to 28-10. It's a play that Rodgers remembers well. 'The first time I met (Rodgers) at the (Steelers) facility at minicamp. He was like, 'I'm still mad at you for that play,' because we knocked him out right before heading to the Super Bowl,' Miller said. 'So it's been fun kind of seeing his perspective on that game, on that play, and just kind of going back and forth with him.' Rodgers and Miller have been building a close bond at St. Vincent College. Miller sees a big difference already compared to last year's offensive unit. 'It's different. The one thing I've noticed with Aaron is just his timing is like — if you're not ready, or you don't get your head around, the ball is gong to hit you in the face,' he said. 'It's not gonna look good. But that's what makes him able to fit the ball into such tight windows.' Alan Saunders provided reporting from St. Vincent College. 1 Steelers WR says Arthur Smith's offense is 'constantly evolving'

Last season, despite significant changes to the roster and staff, the Pittsburgh Steelers offense was ineffective. Arthur Smith came in and took over the offensive coordinator job and the hope was he could inject some life into the offense. The front office put the roster pieces in place to make it happen, so Smith just had to work his magic. The magic ended up being No. 16 in scoring and No. 23 in yards. The news doesn't get any better when you break it down. No. 27 in passing yards and No. 20 in passing touchdowns. In terms of rushing efficiency, things were no better. The Steelers were No. 25 in the league in yards per carry. At times the offense looked antiquated and predictable, seemingly incapable of using the middle of the field at all. But Steelers wide receiver Scotty Miller refutes this and said after a training camp practice that Smith's offense is constantly evolving and praised his willingness to adapt to his players. Really? Is that what we saw last season? Let's hope Miller is right because the Steelers cannot compete in the AFC North with the scheme they ran last season. Frankly, we will believe it when we see it. Aaron Rodgers hosts DK Metcalf, Steelers teammates for Malibu workout

Aaron Rodgers didn't sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers until June 7. The 41-year-old is doing his best to make up for lost time by hosting some of his teammates for offseason workouts in Malibu, California. Rodgers revealed the workout in a photo shared to his Instagram on Wednesday. The new Steelers quarterback was joined by many of his receiving weapons – Scotty Miller, Ben Skowronek, Pat Freiermuth, Calvin Austin, DK Metcalf and Roman Wilson – at the session. Advertisement The Steelers also highlighted the workout on their social media accounts. Rodgers had dropped a hint about the Malibu workout in one of his recent appearances on "The Pat McAfee Show." He didn't say exactly who would be joining him but noted he had invited his wide receiver, tight ends and running backs to work out. "I know coming out to Malibu might not be that high on everybody's list," Rodgers told McAfee. "But we do have some guys coming out next week. So it'll be fun to spend a little time with them." The group did appear to have some fun. Notably, Skowronek posted a video of Rodgers throwing him an alley-oop off the glass to his social media accounts. Perhaps that will allow the teammates to quickly build chemistry ahead of what is a critical season for the Steelers, who haven't won a playoff game since the 2016 NFL campaign, and Rodgers, who said he is "pretty sure" this will be his last season.
