Letter: Constitution is not clear on issue with possible Trump run
'Term limits are necessary for U.S. presidency' (Reading Eagle, April 3) led me to investigate. The Scranton Times-Tribune guest editorial makes a claim about the 12th Amendment that isn't true to the literal text. It claims that those ineligible to run for president may not seek the vice presidency. This claim is actually an interpretation. As such, it is likely to hold up in court due to the intent of the Constitution. But the claim misleads the reader into thinking it's the only interpretation. A technical loophole, as follows, could allow Trump to be elected as vice president and then become president after a second II, Section 1 gives three eligibility requirements for the office of president: natural born citizen, age 35 or older, and at least 14 years U.S. resident. If one of the requirements were that of being elected president, then the line of succession could not exist. Thus, as in the case of Gerald Ford, a distinction exists between becoming president and being elected president. The 12th Amendment explicitly talks only about eligibility for the office of president, as per Article II, Section 1, not about eligibility for being elected president, as in the 22nd Amendment. Literally, only those ineligible to become president may not seek the vice presidency. Under this interpretation, Trump could become president a third time without being elected president more than twice. Glenn Shrom Upper Bern Township

No evidence Bob Dylan said, 'Pope Francis was a voice of mercy in a time of noise'
Why is there not a rating on this post? There's not enough verified evidence for us to definitively confirm or debunk this rumor. Contact us if you have credible information to share. We'll update this post as necessary. In the days after Pope Francis' death on April 21, 2025, a rumor began to spread that singer and songwriter Bob Dylan said the late pontiff "was a voice of mercy in a time of noise." For example, a Facebook user posted the alleged quote on April 21 (archived): Pope Francis was a voice of mercy in a time of noise. He walked with humility, spoke with fire and dared to love the unloved. He reminded the world that compassion isn't weakness and faith doesn't have to shout to be heard. May he rest in the eternal peace he so often preached. The quote, attributed to Dylan, appeared elsewhere on Facebook and at the top of an opinion column by Chris Kelly in the Scranton Times-Tribune on April 22, the day after Francis died (the newspaper later removed the quote). Snopes readers both emailed and searched the website inquiring about the veracity of Dylan's alleged tribute to the pope. However, a Google search for the exact quote did not return any evidence that Dylan had said or written those words. Neither did a search of Dylan's various social media feeds or his website. Snopes reached out to the firm that represents Dylan to ask whether the musician may have said the quote, and we will update this story should they respond. There remained the possibility that Dylan may have mentioned the pope on stage. On the evening of April 21, the day of Francis' death, Dylan performed in Pittsburgh. Snopes contacted two journalists who attended and reviewed the show. "I started walking out during the last song to meet my deadline," said Scott Mervis of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "If he said that, he hadn't said it yet." "He definitely didn't address the pope's passing during Monday night's show in Pittsburgh," said Mike Palm of Trib LIVE, a news outlet that covers western Pennsylvania. Letter: Attacking presidential travel expenses smacks of hypocrisy
On Feb 23, you published an opinion piece from the Scranton Times-Tribune complaining about using taxpayer money for President Donald Trump to attend the Super Bowl ('Trump's sports trips waste taxpayer funds'). It even provided the costs of operating Air Force One and providing Secret Service protection. I can't recall seeing their opinions on the costs borne by taxpayers for Barack Obama's Hawaiian vacations, the $25 million spent by USAID to promote biodiversity in Colombia or the $10 million USAID spent to circumcise adult males in Mozambique. Have they ever opined about how some of the billions of dollars of COVID relief funds the Department of Education gave to schools was used to purchase an ice cream truck, and to pay $393,000 to rent a baseball stadium? All this waste while many schools want more money for breakfasts and lunches for hungry children. The Times-Tribune is apparently OK with a Democrat-controlled government wasting billions overseas while American children go to bed hungry, but not OK with a Republican president at the Super Bowl. In my opinion, the Times-Tribune should have applied the word 'hypocritical' to its own opinions rather than to Trump's visit to the Super Bowl. William H. Rissmiller Exeter Township
