Abom eyes chance to follow McIlroy into Irish Close history
Thomas Abom has the chance to make history this weekend and become the first golfer to defend the AIG Irish Men's Amateur Close Championship since Rory McIlroy. McIlroy, who won this title in 2005 and 2006, was victorious when the event last took place in Westport and with the event returning to the county Mayo venue on Friday, the Edmondstown golfer is eyeing up more history. The then 19-year-old Abom claimed the title in dramatic fashion at Dun Laoghaire last year, defeating hometown favourite Richard Sykes on the 20th hole of their playoff to become the first Edmondstown player to win an Irish championship, a winning moment that remains fresh in his mind. 'When I think back, I just think of all the Dun Laoghaire members around and then there was about 10 supporters from Edmondstown,' said Abom. 'The second hole, when I hit the shot to four feet and just the 10 people from Edmondstown going crazy, and then making the putt, that's what really comes to mind, the winning putt, the winning moment, I would play that a lot in my head.' Since that breakthrough, Abom has been in strong form at home and abroad. A runner-up finish at the Boyd Quaich Memorial Tournament in Scotland, a top five at the Mullingar Scratch Trophy, and a Scratch Cup victory at Hermitage Golf Club have all fuelled his confidence heading into one of the biggest events of the year. 'I've been playing well. I've been putting myself in good chances to win. I just need to piece it all together, but I'm happy with my game,' said Abom. 'The game feels good, so no reason why I can't go out and win it.' The championship's 72-hole stroke play format will see the first round played on Friday and the second Saturday, followed by 36 holes on Sunday to crown the winner, and having been through it all on his way to victory last year, Abom knows patience will be key. 'With four round tournaments, there's always going to be lads shooting low in the first round, but what you come to realise is that it's the lads who can stick around, and then you pounce', said Abom. 'You've got four rounds, so it's kind of a slow burn. Just waiting for your time.' West, East and South of Ireland champions Dylan Holmes (Greystones), David Howard (Fota Island) and Jonathan Keane (Lahinch) will be among the field while there will also be strong Mayo interest, led by Westport's own Conor Stapleton and former member Harry Gillivan (Portmarnock). Ryan Corrigan and Kevin Barry (both Castlebar), Max Humphreys (Ballinrobe), Cormac Ó Muirithe (Belmullet), John William Burke (Ballyhaunis) and Michael Joyce (Mulranny) will also carry home county hopes. Abom begins his defence from the first tee at 1.59pm on Friday alongside Robert Abernethy (Dun Laoghaire) and Conor McCarthy (Headfort). 'Obviously the end goal is to win, but there's still lots of things you can learn about tournaments, even if it doesn't go well,' said Abom. 'This is the big one to defend the title, so I'm really looking forward to it.'

Know Your Parish Within the parish of Moorechurch there is a place name called the `Cavan road`. This road is located within the townland of Lisdornan, leading from the old village location of Lisdornan towards Moorechurch or Balloy crossroads. The name Cavan, literally meaning a hollow and may be referring to a hollow as in a cave. Within the townland of Lisdornan there was such a cave discovered during the 1980`s on land situated to the north of Cavan road. This cave was a 9th century souterrain containing a stone tunnel and beehive shaped chamber; unfortunately it was subsequently destroyed due to quarrying. There are many other references to more souterrains within the townland of Lisdornan. In the early 1980`s a similar structure was discovered on a farm at Elmgrove, Sarsfieldstown, which is located only 2km to the east of the Cavan road. The 1937 school manuscripts also contain information to such tunnels in this area and judging by their description, they were indeed open and accessible back in the early part of the 20th century. The name Lisdornan means Dornan`s Fort, which was possibly an Iron Age ringfort, a family homestead and many of such ring-forts are also found to contain a subterranean system beneath the fort. Also at Lisdornan there is a large earthen mound, which may also be that of an Iron Age burial, while the ancient annals of Ireland refer to a great battle having been fought by the Irish with the Vikings in the adjacent townland of Ratholland in the year 850AD in which 300 lost their lives.

Deerpark's Damien Fleming is top scorer at Kerry qualifiers for Munster Matchplay finals
Tralee's Jason Cregan is automatic for the Senior event as defending champion, as he chases three-in-a-row overall with the player he beat in last year's all Kerry decider, Deerpark's Damien Fleming, topping the scoresheet on Sunday with a total of 15 under par. Claiming the other four senior spots where Tralee club-mates Michael Conway and Jason O'Regan, who both had 12 under, County Senior Matchplay runner-up Darren Goodall finished on nine under par, and Gavin Carroll on three under. In the Intermediate grade, Mark O'Regan's total of five under would have been good enough to join his father in the senior ranks. Bobby McCarron's four under par was also a good enough senior score on the day in securing the second Intermediate spot, as O'Regan and McCarron join County Intermediate Matchplay winner Mark Lucey (Tralee) in the finals. The Junior grade saw five over par as the leading score with Paddy Murphy of Deerpark and Reece Sugrue of Tralee attaining that total. Noel Lee claimed the other spot with seven over as these three join County Junior Matchplay winner Mark O'Shea in the Munster finals draw. These finals will be played in Douglas in Cork on the weekend of May 10 and 11. There is a slight lull in the calendar until after the May weekend as Castleisland announced last weekend the decision to postpone their Scratch Cup events scheduled for the May Bank Holiday Monday until a later date pending approval from Pitch & Putt Ireland.
