Scream 7 writer teases ‘really specific reason' for Neve Campbell's return as Sidney Prescott

'Scream 7' writer Guy Busick has teased there is a "really specific reason" why Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott has returned. After sitting out 2023's 'Scream VI' due to a row over her salary, the 51-year-old actress has reprised her iconic scream-queen role, and 'Scream 7's writer Guy Busick has revealed there is a "really cool reason" why Sidney is back. In an interview with the scribe said: "I don't want to give anything away about the reason ['Scream 7'] had to be a Sidney movie because there's a really cool reason. "In all these movies, you have to ask, 'Why now? What is the thing 'Scream' is commenting on now?' 'Scream' is always in a conversation with the audience about the state of movies, the state of horror movies and in particular, franchises." Busick added he had first pitched the idea for Sidney's return to director Kevin Williamson, which he had come up with alongside his 'Scream' and 'Scream VI' co-writer James Vanderbilt. He explained: "There is a really specific reason why Sidney is in this movie. I will say there is a reason and we were happy with it when we cracked it. "We went to Neve Campbell and said, 'This is why. This is why Sidney now.' Neve was like, 'Oh, I get that.' I pitched Kevin this first, too. "He got it and then I pitched the studio. I came up with the story with my co-writer on 5 and 6, James Vanderbilt." As well as Campbell, 'Scream 7' will see the return of some other series icons, including Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers, Matthew Lillard's Stu Macher, David Arquette's Dewey Riley and Scott Foley's Roman Bridger. However, Busick admitted the original idea for 'Scream 7' 'was a completely different thing', as it would have focused on the 'Core Four' - the Meeks-Martin twins Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown), and Carpenter sisters Tara (Jenna Ortega) and Sam (Melissa Barrera). However, after Ortega and Barrera exited the project - with the latter actress being dismissed by Spyglass Media Group following her controversial comments about the war in Gaza - the 'Scream 7' team "had to start from scratch". Busick explained: "We weren't able to use what we had in the previous iteration for this one. [We] just had to start from scratch, which was a bummer. "We were excited about what we had for that movie. We wanted to do one more 'Core Four' movie. We know the fans love those characters. We love those characters. We created those characters. I would love to see, in some universe, the continuation of their characters, in some way. But we weren't able to port over the stuff from the other story. "It was like, 'Okay, here is what the universe dealt us.' We always wanted to do a Sidney movie and so it was like, 'All right, let's get into it and why now and why this one?'"

‘Scream 7' Is Getting a Time Jump From the Franchise's Previous Installments

Details regarding Scream 7 are starting to trickle out as the horror franchise detours back into a story with its original remaining stars. As original film scribe Kevin Williamson takes the helm of a Scream film for the first time, he's bringing it all together with Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) as they encounter ghosts of friends and ghostfaces past, including David Arquette, Scott Foley, and Matthew Lillard. Some of the Scream reboot core cast also remains, with Mason Gooding and Jasmine Savoy reprising their roles as the Meeks twins But now there's the development that the film will jump ahead in time for a 'really cool reason' as shared by the film's writer Guy Busick to Busick continued to elaborate why the movie has become a Sidney-centered story, making the series' original final girl once again the lead. 'I don't want to give anything away about the reason [Scream 7] had to be a Sidney movie because there's a really cool reason,' Busick told ComicBook. 'In all these movies, you have to ask, 'Why now? What is the thing Scream is commenting on now?' Scream is always in a conversation with the audience about the state of movies, the state of horror movies and in particular, franchises.' He shared that her participation was tantamount to the new installment's themes. 'We went to Neve Campbell and said, 'This is why. This is why Sidney now.' Neve was like, 'Oh, I get that.' I pitched Kevin [Williamson] this first, too. He got it and then I pitched the studio.' He added that the new movie will not be set in New York, as the previous film was. It will also feature a time jump. 'I don't want to be the one to spoil where it is,' Busick said; he also was vague on the time shift, but for seemingly less spoiler-y reasons. 'It's an unspecified amount of time [after Scream VI]. I might get contradicted by other people, but in my mind, more than two years. I would say at least two years. It could be two years, but I would say two years plus.' Many are rightfully mad that Melissa Barrera was controversially pushed out of leading the franchise's rebirth, and the repercussions of that might affect the interest with this particular sequel. It remains to be seen if bringing back so many past characters will be enough to compensate for perhaps wrongfully abandoning the Carpenter sisters storyline. In the meantime we'll be wondering if it's back to Woodsboro we go! Scream 7 will hit theaters February 27, 2026.

SCREAM 7 Writer Shares Why Sidney Prescott Is Back in and What It Means for the Core Four — GeekTyrant

After stepping away from Scream VI , Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott is making her return to the franchise and according to Scream 7 writer Guy Busick, the upcoming installment was designed from scratch to center Sidney, marking a shift in direction after the original sequel was scrapped due to behind-the-scenes shakeups involving franchise leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega. In an interview with ComicBook, Busick explained: 'The original Scream 7 with Barrera and Ortega was a completely different thing… [We] just had to start from scratch, which was a bummer.' Fans were hoping for one last ride with the 'Core Four,' made up of Sam and Tara Carpenter, and the Meeks-Martin twins, Chad and Mindy. 'We were excited about what we had for that movie. We wanted to do one more 'Core Four' movie. We know the fans love those characters. We love those characters. We created those characters.' But, with Barrera fired and Ortega bowing out, the creative team pivoted and found a way to finally tell the Sidney story they'd been sitting on. Busick teased: 'We always wanted to do a Sidney movie and so it was like, 'All right, let's get into it and why now and why this one?'I don't want to give anything away about the reason [Scream 7] had to be a Sidney movie because there's a really cool reason… 'Scream is always in a conversation with the audience about the state of movies, the state of horror movies and in particular, franchises.' Busick is pointing at legacy sequels like Halloween (2018), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), and The Exorcist: Believer (2023) as part of the conversation. He goes on to say: 'There is a really specific reason why Sidney is in this movie. I will say there is a reason and we were happy with it when we cracked it. 'We went to Neve Campbell and said, 'This is why. This is why Sidney now.' Neve was like, 'Oh, I get that.' I pitched Kevin [Williamson] this first, too. He got it and then I pitched the studio.' The film also finds a way to bring back the Meeks-Martin twins—Mindy and Chad—despite the loss of the other half of their group. In regard to that Busick said: 'I believe it was James [Vanderbilt] that came up with it… but it was an organic way why they would be in this movie. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say it's through Gale. She's the connective tissue in 5 and 6 and she's in this.' He added that the new location 'is not New York,' and suggested it's been 'more than two years' since the events of Scream VI . Then, of course, somehow Dewey (David Arquette) is returning, despite being stabbed to death in Scream 5 . Add to that the return of other previously dead Ghostfaces with Matthew Lillard's Stu and Scott Foley's Roman, and the mystery is clearly part of the plan. Joel McHale joins the cast as Sidney's husband Mark, while Isabel May plays their daughter. The rest of the cast includes some names like Mckenna Grace, Anna Camp, and Jimmy Tatro. There's a lot packed into this seventh film and it sounds like it's going to take some big swings. I'm excited to see what the story will be when the film is released on February 27, 2026.

The time when Dawson's Creek reboot almost happened, creator Kevin Williamson reveals

A Dawson's Creek revival with the original cast almost came to fruition, according to series creator Kevin Williamson. In an exclusive interview with TV Insider, Williamson shared that, despite the show's 2003 finale providing a sense of closure, there were discussions about revisiting the iconic teen drama during the peak of the reboot craze following the COVID-19 pandemic. The beloved series, which followed the lives of Joey (Katie Holmes), Pacey (Joshua Jackson), Dawson (James Van Der Beek), and their friends in the fictional town of Capeside, had concluded its five-season run with emotional farewells, including the death of Jen (Michelle Williams). However, the idea of a revival sparked interest from both the cast and the creator, with Williamson admitting that they were repeatedly approached during the height of reunion and reboot trends. 'James [Van Der Beek] wanted to do it, but then Josh [Jackson] was busy. Katie [Holmes] was on board, but then James wasn't available. No one could align their schedules,' Williamson explained, noting that while the cast was enthusiastic about the concept, timing proved to be a major hurdle. Ultimately, the team reflected on the show's legacy and concluded that revisiting Dawson's Creek in its original form might not be the best direction. 'We kind of just went, 'We did it and it was good,'' Williamson said. 'We felt like maybe it could live again in another way, but not as a reboot.' While they considered possibilities, such as focusing on the next generation of characters, the revival ultimately did not move forward. Despite the scheduling conflicts, Williamson remains busy with multiple projects, including directing Scream 7 and debuting his new series, The Waterfront. As for the original cast, Holmes, Jackson, and Van Der Beek are all involved in separate projects, with their individual careers keeping them occupied.
