Norovirus Outbreak Infects Hundreds of Passengers on Popular Cruise Line

Over 200 passengers and crew members aboard a still-at-sea Cunard cruise ship have contracted norovirus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The ship departed Southampton, England on March 8 bound for New York City and then the Caribbean. Of the 2,538 guests on board, 224 have reportedly fallen ill to the stomach bug which causes vomiting and diarrhea. Another 17 crew members are also affected, the CDC confirmed. As the cruise does not conclude until April 6, the uninfected guests are stuck rubbing shoulders with those who have come down with norovirus.'We have had a small number of guests on board Queen Mary 2 who have reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness,' a Cunard spokesperson told U.S.A. Today. 'We are continuing to closely monitor the guests and, as a precaution, completed a comprehensive deep clean of the ship and immediately activated our enhanced health and safety protocols, which are proving to be effective.' Unfortunately, the Queen Mary 2 is not the only ship stuck at sea currently suffering from a norovirus outbreak. The CDC reported that Seabourn Cruise Lines' Seabourn Encore is also weathering its share of sick passengers. Out of 461 guests, 12 have fallen ill with norovirus. Twenty-two of the 405 crew members have also been diagnosed. Like the Queen Mary 2, the Seabourn Encore will be in open water until April 9, leaving uninfected passengers over a week to wait it passengers on both ships have been quarantined from healthy guests. So far this year, the CDC has identified 12 gastrointestinal disease outbreaks on cruise ships. Norovirus has reportedly been responsible for 10 of those instances.

More cruisers get virus; Carnival clarifies drink package stand

Cruise lines have done a really good job limiting the impact of norovirus outbreaks. Contaiment and quarantine methods clearly work and have spared cruisers the sort of "whole ship gets sick" disasters that in the past had overwhelmed ship plumbing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention oversees efforts to keep viruses under control on cruise ships. It has some very basic guidelines for passengers: Related: Royal Caribbean cruisers share what it's like to try Celebrity "GI illness is a commonly used term for acute gastroenteritis," the agency's website says. Reporting GI illness on cruise ships is important. "When passengers and crew tell the medical center on board about their symptoms, it helps GI illness outbreaks get detected quickly. This allows steps to be taken to limit the spread of illness. Medical staff evaluate symptoms to see if they meet our case definition for" acute gastroenteritis. The CDC also has two clear ways to identify when you need to report to the medical center. Three or more loose stools within a 24-hour period or what is more than normal for that person Vomiting along with one of the following symptoms: diarrhea, muscle ache, headache, abdominal cramp, or fever Nobody wants their cruise cut short by illness, but most people also don't want to spread their illness to others. This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Thursday, March 27. Over 225 people have fallen ill in separate noro cases aboard two different cruise ships. Now, according to the CDC, the first one was Cunard's Queen Mary II. It had 183 passengers and 14 crew. Meanwhile, 29 cases were reported on the Seabourn Encore, which departed March 16th for Japan and Hawaii. That ship, obviously, with a lot smaller capacity. Now, both cruise lines say that they've implemented enhanced sanitation and isolation protocols. This marks the 11th and 12th ships to have outbreaks since January. In 2024, there were 18 outbreaks. And Carnival Cruise Line is doubling down on its policy for the Cheers drink package, saying if one adult in the cabin buys it, all adults 21 and over must do the same thing. No exceptions. A norovirus outbreak hit a luxury Cunard cruise ship, leaving nearly 200 passengers sick

A norovirus outbreak on the Queen Mary 2, a luxury cruise ship, affected 183 passengers and 14 crew. About 7% of passengers on board reported symptoms during the voyage, per the CDC. Norovirus is highly contagious, with outbreaks especially common in hospitals and schools. A norovirus outbreak on a luxury Cunard cruise ship left almost 200 people sick, causing symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Vessel Sanitation Program released details on Monday about the norovirus outbreak on the Queen Mary 2. It said about 183 of the 2,538 passengers on board — about 7% — fell ill during the voyage. It also said that 14 of the 1,232 crew members also reported being sick during the journey. The ship departed England on March 8, according to CruiseMapper, sailing first to New York before continuing to the eastern Caribbean, with stops in Barbados, St Lucia, and Grenada. In an email statement to Business Insider, a Cunard spokesperson said a "small number of guests" reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on the Queen Mary 2. "We are continuing to closely monitor the guests and, as a precaution, completed a comprehensive deep clean of the ship and immediately activated our enhanced health and safety protocols, which are proving to be effective," they added. The Queen Mary 2, Cunard's flagship vessel, was the largest passenger ship ever built at the time of its construction. It has 15 restaurants and bars, five swimming pools, a casino, and the first-ever planetarium at sea. The ship frequently makes transatlantic crossings, with ticket prices starting at around $1,400 per person, and luxury duplex suites upwards of $35,000. Although norovirus is sometimes referred to as the "cruise ship virus," outbreaks on cruise ships only account for about 1% of all reported cases in the US, according to the CDC. More common outbreak locations included healthcare facilities, restaurants, and schools. It's an extremely contagious virus, and is the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea in the US. According to the CDC, there are about 2,500 reported norovirus outbreaks in the US each year. Norovirus can be spread through direct contact, eating food or drinking liquid contaminated with the virus, or touching contaminated surfaces. The CDC said that Cunard responded to the outbreak by increasing cleaning and disinfection procedures, isolating sick passengers and crew, collecting stool specimens for testing, and consulting with the Vessel Sanitation Program. A few days after Cunard reported the outbreak, a smaller norovirus outbreak was reported on a different cruise ship. According to the CDC, 7 of the 461 passengers and 22 of the 405 crew members reported being ill during a voyage on the Seabourn Encore, which belongs to Seabourn Cruise Line. Last week, BI reported on how passengers aboard Cunard's Queen Anne were advised to take precautions as the vessel navigated a piracy-prone area in Southeast Asia during its maiden world voyage. Passengers were told that promenade decks would be closed and only essential open-deck lights would remain on, to minimize the ship's visibility, and that they should keep their curtains drawn. The Queen Anne is Cunard's fourth luxury cruise ship and can accommodate 2,996 guests, in addition to 1,225 crew. Read the original article on Business Insider

220+ passengers, crew sick in Cunard, Seabourn norovirus outbreaks

220+ passengers, crew sick in Cunard, Seabourn norovirus outbreaks Show Caption Hide Caption Norovirus: Symptoms and prevention of 'stomach flu' When norovirus cases spike, these are symptoms you should watch out for and measures you can take for prevention. The outbreaks on the Queen Mary 2 and Seabourn Encore involved both passengers and crew members. Both cruise lines implemented enhanced sanitation protocols in response to the outbreaks. Norovirus outbreaks are common in congregate settings and are not exclusive to cruise ships. More than 225 people got sick in norovirus outbreaks on Cunard Line and Seabourn ships. Among 2,538 guests on Cunard's Queen Mary 2, 183 reported being ill during its current voyage, along with 14 crew members, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Their main symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea. The ship departed from Southampton, England, on March 8, bound for New York and the Caribbean, according to CruiseMapper. Seven of Seabourn Encore's 461 guests and 22 employees also reported being sick, the health agency said. They had the same symptoms, along with abdominal cramps. The ship set sail on a Japan and Hawaii cruise on March 16, per CruiseMapper. Both cruise lines implemented heightened cleaning and disinfection measures and isolated sick guests and crew, among other steps, the CDC said. Cunard and Seabourn did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's requests for comment. There have been 12 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruises that met the health agency's threshold for public notification so far this year. Ten of those were caused by norovirus. While the illness is frequently associated with cruise ships, those make up only 1% of all outbreaks reported. Dr. Dean Winslow, a professor of medicine and pediatrics at Stanford Medicine, told USA TODAY in January that outbreaks usually happen in congregate settings, especially where people eat and drink. That includes cruises, along with universities, nursing homes and 'even hospitals,' he said. Nathan Diller is a consumer travel reporter for USA TODAY based in Nashville.
