Horse racing tips: ‘He caught the eye on debut' – Templegate's NAP poised to strike in style
TEMPLEGATE takes on Tuesday's racing confident of building the bank ahead of Derby weekend. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. CLOUDS HILL (4.17 Leicester, nap) This son of Cracksman caught the eye when second on debut at Musselburgh last time for trainer Charlie Johnston. He got a bump off the winner when making his challenge, which was far from ideal. He should have learned from that experience and doesn't need much more. DELPOTRO (2.30 Southwell, nb) He had almost eight lengths in hand when scoring at Sedgefield last time and champion jockey Sean Bowen stays in the saddle. He likes this minimum trip on decent ground and can lead them home from the front again. TOURIST (7.45 Lingfield, treble) A horse going places. He's back on his favoured turf where he landed a cosy win at Bath two starts ago. He can get on the front under David Egan and will take a lot of passing. COMMANDING PRINCE (4.47 Leicester, Lucky 15) He's yet to finish out of the frame and went close at Ayr last time. He hung near the finish there and the first-time blinkers should help with that. Horse racing tips: ‘Champion jockey will make the difference' – Templegate's NAP loves this track
TEMPLEGATE takes on Wednesday's racing confident of unearthing a few winners. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. LERMOOS LEGEND (8.10 Cartmel, nap) Can keep it in the family at his favourite track. Champion jockey Sean Bowen teams up with brother Mickey on this 10-year-old who has two wins and a host of placed efforts at this quirky Cumbrian track. He went close at Ffos Las last time and gets an upgrade in the saddle today. ORIENTAL PRINCE (4.00 Hamilton, nb) Is a regular winner who got his head in front again at Haydock 18 days ago. He has lots of pace so this drop back in distance isn't a worry, especially with some cut back in the ground. Trainer Jim Goldie is in excellent form. TURQUINO (8.22 Kempton, treble) Showed promise when winning two maidens on the sand. He didn't get the run of the race on his turf handicap debut at Ascot and can take a big step forward. A WAR EAGLE (2.30 Hamilton, Lucky 15) He has shown promise for trainer Ed Bethell in three maidens and goes handicapping from a fair mark of 72. He'll enjoy this step up to a mile. Punchestown Day 3: Majborough bounces back from Cheltenham disappointment by romping home to claim Novice chase
Last season's Triumph Hurdle hero had looked every inch a top-class chaser in the making after winning his first two starts over the larger obstacles, but a juddering error two fences from home ultimately led to him suffering a surprise reverse in the Arkle at Prestbury Park in mid-March. The Willie Mullins-trained five-year-old was sent off at 4-11 to reward those who kept the faith back on home soil and while he pulled his way to the front on the second circuit and raced keenly throughout under Mark Walsh, he stamped his class from the home turn, pulling 14 lengths clear of the Arkle runner-up Only By Night. Mullins, saddling his 200th winner of the season in Ireland, said "He jumped today like we know he can jump. For some reason things didn't go right for him in Cheltenham, but he's redeemed himself today. "He's a huge, big horse but he's very light framed and is an athlete every time you look at him. Looking at him in the parade ring today, there wasn't one ounce of spare flesh on him, and I couldn't have galloped him one more time. "He's only five and hopefully he'll mature this summer. I'm looking forward to what he could mature into over the next 18 months or two years. "What he did there you are looking at the Champion Chase, but he has enough pedigree to stay a trip." Putapoundinthejar, with Sean Bowen up, jumps the last on their way to winning the Specialist Group Handicap Hurdle during day three of the Punchestown Festival. Photo by Seb Daly/Sportsfile Earlier, Britain's newly-crowned champion jockey Sean Bowen was at his brilliant best as he steered Putapoundinthejar to victory in the opening race on day three of the Festival. Taking to the saddle for the first time sine celebrating his title triumph with a big-race success aboard Resplendent Grey in Saturday's bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown, the 27-year-old produced another power-packed ride on Tony Martin's 17-2 shot in the Specialist Group Handicap Hurdle. Battle Of Ridgeway (50-1) was clear of the chasing pack on the run to the final flight, but Bowen conjured a late charge out of Putapoundinthejar, who got up to score by half a length. Bowen, who since Saturday has enjoyed his stag party in Tenerife, said: 'He did well to win as he didn't jump well at all. He got into a rhythm from halfway and did well to pick up the leader. 'I had a good clear run down to the last. He winged the last and picked up well from the back of it. 'It's good ground and he enjoyed that. He will have learned loads today.' Sean's brother James Bowen got his name on the winner's board after Jeriko Du Reponet (13-2 joint-favourite) led home a one-two for Nicky Henderson in the Conway Piling Handicap Hurdle. Doddiethegreat beat Jeriko Du Reponet in the Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival and the Seven Barrows pair again came to the fore, but this time it was the latter who came out on top to give his rider a timely boost ahead of partnering Constitution Hill in Friday's Champion Hurdle. Henderson said: 'I felt sorry for one horse at Cheltenham and I now I feel sorry for the other one! There was no alternative route other than to come here and take each other on again. 'You've got to be delighted with both of them – two divisions would have helped! 'It all went wrong for Jeriko at the start of the season when he was meant to go chasing and we thought he was going to be the star. It all went wrong at Sandown on his first start, it was terrible and we had to come back over hurdles. 'The Pertemps became the objective, he didn't quite win that but he's got his consolation and we must go back over fences next year and get the job done properly.' There was further success for the raiding party in the Frontline Security Handicap Chase, with 16-1 shot Petit Tonnerre finishing with a flourish under Richie McLernon to strike gold for the father-son training partnership of Jonjo and AJ O'Neill. The latter said: 'We were hitting the crossbar earlier in the week but Richie gave that lad a really lovely ride, very patient, and it was lovely to see it coming off for all the team. 'JP (McManus, owner) is a massive supporter of the game and a massive supporter of ours, so it's amazing to have a winner on a day like today.' Joseph O'Brien and J J Slevin teamed up to land the Mongey Communications La Touche Cup Cross Country Chase with 7-1 shot Busselton. 'It's a special race, historic. It was really exciting for us as it was our first runner in it and even to have a horse for the banks this year was special,' said O'Brien. 'J J has done a great job schooling this horse and gave him a fantastic ride today. He's won under all codes and hopefully will win again.' O'Brien and Slevin completed a surprise double in the Close Brothers Irish EBF Mares Novice Hurdle, with Cottesloe Sunshine (33-1) beating the Cheltenham Festival runner-up and 8-13 favourite Sixandahalf into third place. O'Brien added: 'It was a great ride by J J and a very tough filly. She jumped well today and I'm delighted for Nick (Fahy, owner) and his family who are here today. 'We were coming here fresh and a lot of the competitors had been to all the Festivals over the last few months. I'd be lying if I said I expected her to win but we thought we might run well.'

'I've fulfilled a childhood dream'
75,000 miles. 902 rides. 180 wins. Champion Jockey. Sean Bowen has fulfilled his childhood dream. After hitting 1,000 wins in February, the 27-year-old had already set his next goal - to become champion. "It was obviously very exciting to hit the 1,000 wins. I'm very lucky. A lot of people don't get to hit the 1,000 winners in their career, so to get there was amazing," he said. "For the last two or three years now this has been the goal. I really wanted it last year, and it didn't happen, this year has gone amazingly well and thankfully we got there. "I've fulfilled a childhood dream. When I was racing the ponies up the gallops with my brothers I was pretending to be Sir AP McCoy, Brian Hughes or Richard Johnson - legends of the game." Bowen missed out on last year's title after suffering a knee injury on Boxing Day when leading the Championship. "I wasn't going to let it happen twice, I couldn't let the Championship slip again," he said. "It was just a matter of starting this season off as fast as we possibly could and I managed to build up a good lead in the summer. Harry Skelton was fighting through Christmas but I built that lead back up again. "The travelling is crazy. My car will have clocked up 75,000 miles in the season. I very rarely get to go home much so, it's difficult, but it is all well worth it when you're crowned Champion Jockey. "It's hard work mentally and physically, I've kept the body in good shape this season. Mentally, it can be hard work, never having a day off, and just keeping going every day. "I can't stand seeing somebody else win on a horse that I should have been on, that's why I'll travel up and down the country in one day for a ride if I have to." Sean's parents, Peter and Karen Bowen, have been training racehorses since he was a child. "Mum and dad from day one have given me wonderful support," he explained. "You see how hard they work. They live down in Pembrokeshire, and they would drive all the way to Ayr or Perth just for us to win a pony race. "So if you see that, if you see them doing that for you, then I suppose that's probably what's given us the drive in us to want to do more, and don't mind getting in the car and driving wherever you need to go. "My partner Harriet puts up with a lot, because I see her very rarely, we're getting married in July and then we have our honeymoon, we're really looking forward to that break together." The Welshman has finished the season in fine style, starting with a five-timer at his home track, Ffos Las. "It was actually my first ever five-timer. I've managed a few four-timers, but never a five-timer. It was a magic day - it was in front of family and the Welsh crowd who were brilliant, that was a day I'll never forget," he added. The Welshman followed up that success with an Irish Grand National victory aboard the Rebecca Curtis-trained Haiti Couleurs. "It's the biggest win of my career, to go over there and beat the Irish was obviously brilliant, and to do it for Rebecca, who's a Welsh trainer, was so good, it was an incredible day," said Bowen. Horse racing tips: ‘His 5lb rise looks very fair' – Templegate's 7-2 NAP can strike for champion jockey
TEMPLEGATE tackles Saturday's epic jumps season finale confident of banging in a few winners. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up CLASSIC ANTHEM (1.50 Sandown, nap) He can take this nice prize under Sean Bowen. He was good here last time and a 5lb walk up the weights looks pretty fair. He is fine on the ground and can take another step forward. HIGH CLASS HERO (4.10 Sandown, nb) He can get Willie Mullins over the line in the trainer's race by winning this. He has lots of potential and a very fair weight after going close in a Thurles Grade 3 last time. Novices have a decent record in this and Paul Townend in the saddle is a plus. KITZBUHEL (3.00 Sandown, treble) He was slightly outclassed in the Liverpool Hurdle last time and this should be more his grade. He was impressive at Gowran two starts back and has few miles on the clock. Templegate's TV verdicts SANDOWN 1.20 KIENTZHEIM hasn't looked a lot like her half-sister Epatante since moving to Nicky Henderson but she can improve a bundle now going into handicaps from a low mark. This trip is fine and James Bowen can get a tune out of her. Nardaran looked a nice prospect when scooting in by 11 lengths at Taunton earlier this month. Despite that, his opening handicap mark is fair and Sean Bowen's ride will be thereabouts. Paul Nicholls also has Fasol who needs to bounce back from a poor run, while Harry Cobden rides the yard's Sorceleur who was just five lengths away in the Imperial Cup here last month. 1.50 CLASSIC ANTHEM can take this nice prize under Sean Bowen. He was good here last time and a 5lb walk up the weights looks pretty fair. He is fine on the ground and can take another step forward. Riskintheground looks dangerous for Dan Skelton. He comes here in the form of his life having won at Ayr earlier this month before a quick follow up at Cheltenham 10 days ago. This trip is ideal and a 2lb rise gives him every chance if this isn't coming too soon. Insurrection found the Golden Miller at Cheltenham a bit much last time but he went into that race after a 16-length win at Musselburgh and could easily bounce back. 2.25 GAELIC WARRIOR bounced back from his modest Dublin Chase effort with an impressive success at Aintree last time. He relished the longer trip there and there should be no stamina worries here. He goes on any ground and looks a cut above these. Pic D'Orhy would love this race to be run at Ascot where he's won four hot races in a row. He has yet to fully prove his stamina but he comes here fresh having not run since February and that could make the difference. Gentleman De Mee will enjoy this jumping test after winning the Topham over the National fences at Aintree. He finished strongly there and should enjoy this trip. 3.00 Willie Mullins won this last year and can follow up thanks to KITZBUHEL. He was slightly outclassed in the Liverpool Hurdle last time and this should be more his grade. He was impressive at Gowran two starts back and has few miles on the clock. Take No Chances was no match for Lossiemouth in the Aintree Hurdle but that's no disgrace. She chased that superstar home in the Cheltenham Mares' race too and her weight allowance enhances her chances. Blueking D'Oroux got stuck in the mud at Fontwell last time and has had a little break since. He ran well in the Long Walk Hurdle at Christmas and a repeat of that would put him in the picture. 3.35 JONBON bounced back from his Cheltenham Festival mishap with a convincing defence of his Melling Chase title at Aintree. He's had a busy season but should have enough quality to land another nice prize. Il Etait Temps is coming back from a year off since his win at last year's Punchestown Festival. He has run well when fresh before. The slight worry is his liking for softer ground and his jumping will be tested by this track. Saying that, he has plenty of quality. Paul Townend sticks with Energumene who was pulled up in the Champion Chase and was no match for Jonbon at Ascot in January. He's knocking on a bit now at 11 but is still a threat. The game Edwardstone is past his best but likes it here and is in the each-way picture. 4.10 HIGH CLASS HERO can get Willie Mullins over the line in the trainer's race by winning this. He has lots of potential and a very fair weight after going close in a Thurles Grade 3 last time. Novices have a decent record in this and Paul Townend in the saddle is a plus. Defending champ and stablemate Minella Cocooner was a little unlucky in the Grand National and should be thereabouts again. Another Mullins hope Grangeclare West has a touch of class and is feared. Away from the Closutton batallion, Victorrino looks a fair each-way price under Charlie Deutsch. 4.45 IKE SPORT won this race 12 months ago and showed positive times when fifth in a big field at Aintree last time. He has come nicely down the weights and we know this trip and track are ideal. Willie Mullins has two good chances with Dr Eggman going close at Cheltenham last time. Stablemate Bunting wasn't disgraced at Ayr's Grand National meeting and is dangerous under Paul Townend. The Skeltons have a chance too with Mostly Sunny who is back just five days after a smooth success at Plumpton. He'll be right there if this isn't coming too soon. LEICESTER 2.05 COMPLETELY RANDOM clocked a big personal best when scooting in at Southwell last time. He finished the race strongly over 5f so this extra furlong should be fine and he could be the type who improves plenty as a four-year-old. Trilby got the job done nicely at Beverley and another 4lb rise in the weights may not put the brakes on. He would prefer some rain as his best has come with a bit of cut. Similar comments apply to Sergeant Wilko who ended last season with an excellent fifth at York in a big field. He has winning form over this trip and track and will be dangerous if handling the quicker ground. HAYDOCK 2.40 MYAL went for home a bit too soon on comeback at Doncaster last time and was nabbed near the line. He should be fitter for that good third and has winning form over this trip and track. He handles any ground and could have more to come. Skukuza hasn't run since his mighty second in the Britannia Stakes last June. He is entitled to need this but anything like that form would take him close. Watch the betting for clues about his fitness. Cerulean Bay is solid over this trip and is only 3lb higher than his last win. He has scored here before and should be in the mix, while English Oak's last win was the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot and he's still 9lb higher than that. He likes this trip but may need this run.
