DOJ Employee Arrested by 20 Officers in D.C. After Hurling Subway Sandwich at Federal Agent

"I did it. I threw a sandwich," said D.C. resident Sean Dunn, according to court documents NEED TO KNOW Sean Dunn, a now-terminated Justice Department employee, was arrested by 20 officers at his home and charged with felony assault after allegedly throwing a sandwich at a federal agent Viral video footage of the incident shows a man throwing a sandwich at an officer's chest before turning around and sprinting away Local pushback against heightened law enforcement in Washington began even before Donald Trump deployed the National Guard to D.C. and federalized the city police on Aug. 11 A Justice Department employee now faces a felony charge after hurling a sandwich at a federal officer in Washington, D.C. D.C. resident Sean Dunn has been charged with felony assault after he approached a federal agent on Sunday, Aug. 10, and threw a Subway sandwich, CBS affiliate WUSA 9 reported. The incident came amid heightened law enforcement presence in the capital city at the request of President Donald Trump. A viral video capturing the incident shows Dunn approach one agent and appear to yell at him before throwing the sandwich at the officer's chest. A handful of officers in the vicinity then promptly start chasing Dunn, who turns around and begins sprinting away. Dunn was ultimately detained on Sunday night and released with no charges. Despite his earlier release, Dunn learned on Wednesday that a warrant was out for his arrest, according to CNN. His attorney claims that he didn't have time to turn himself in for the new felony charge before 20 officers were sent to his home to re-arrest him. According to court records obtained by the outlet and The New York Times, Dunn admitted while being processed, "I did it. I threw a sandwich." His felony charge could result in up to eight years in prison, though he was freed from custody without needing to post bail on Thursday. According to a statement from Attorney General Pam Bondi, Dunn's employment at the Justice Department was terminated this week. Dunn's arrest and release comes amid the Trump administration's takeover of Washington's law enforcement. On Monday, Aug. 11, after several days with heightened security in the city, Trump ordered in the National Guard and federalized the Metropolitan Police Department. The aggressive move was deemed by Trump as a response to the "public safety emergency" in D.C., though local data supports evidence of a significant decrease in both violent and non-violent crime. Suspect who admitted to hurling sandwich at DC cops on the street revealed to be a Justice Department employee

A suspect seen in a viral video hurling a sub-style sandwich at a federal law enforcement officer Sunday night has been identified as a Department of Justice employee. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Thursday that Sean Dunn had been fired from the department. Court documents filed Wednesday state that Dunn approached officers, including Metro Transit Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, and started yelling. The incident took place around 11 p.m. on 14th Street NW in Washington, D.C. Dunn allegedly stood within inches of a Customs and Border Protection agent, pointed a finger in his face, and shouted 'F*** you! You f****** fascists! Why are you here! I don't want you in my city!' This went on for several minutes before he crossed the street and continued to yell. A few minutes later, at about 11.06 p.m., Dunn allegedly approached the CBP agent and threw the sandwich at him, hitting the agent in the chest. Dunn tried to flee the scene but was detained. As the Metropolitan Police Department processed him, Dunn told an officer, 'I did it. I threw a sandwich.' He has been charged with 'assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and employees of the United States.' He faces up to a year in prison if convicted. The U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, said in a video on X on Wednesday that Dunn would be charged with a felony. Dunn worked as an international affairs specialist in the criminal division of the Department of Justice, an anonymous source told The Washington Post. The office handles prisoner swaps, international extraditions, and other overseas actions. The 37-year-old lives in D.C., a spokesperson for the office of the D.C. U.S. attorney told the paper. A source at the department told Axios that Dunn was hired in 2022 as a specialist who was still 'burrowed in' from the Biden administration. The Independent has contacted Dunn's attorney and the Department of Justice for comment. 'If you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you,' Bondi said on X, adding that Dunn was 'no longer' a Department of Justice employee. 'Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony.' 'This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ,' she added. 'You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement.' In a video posted on X, Pirro said Dunn 'thought it was funny.' 'Well, he doesn't think it's funny today, because we charged him with a felony assault on a police officer, and we're gonna back the police to the hilt, so there!' she added. 'Stick your Subway sandwich somewhere else." The footage of the incident, which took place in a popular nightlife area of D.C., quickly went viral after being shared on Instagram under the account @bigap4l. Cortez Dargin filmed the video, telling The Post that he was leaving a nightclub with his friends when they heard Dunn yelling. 'I was like, 'Let me record this guy, because he's going crazy right now,'" he told the paper. The incident took place as President Donald Trump flooded the nation's capital with federal law enforcement agents and National Guard troops. While Trump claims that Washington is a city plagued by crime, city officials note that statistics show that violent crime is at its lowest point in three decades. On Monday, Trump announced that he was placing the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under federal control and deploying the National Guard to 'rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse.' National Guard troops began patrolling the streets of Washington Tuesday night, with a total of about 800 troops being deployed.

Man charged with throwing sandwich at US agent was Justice Dept staffer

Sean Dunn was taken into custody at the scene and admitted to throwing the sandwich, according to the charging document. WASHINGTON - A man facing a felony assault charge for throwing a sandwich at a federal agent during President Donald Trump's crackdown on crime in Washington, D.C. worked at the U.S. Justice Department, Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Thursday. Sean Dunn, 37, assisted lawyers on international cases in the department's Criminal Division, a Justice Department official said. "I just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice — NO LONGER," Bondi wrote on X. "Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony." Dunn has not entered a plea. His attorney had no immediate comment on the charge, which carries up to one year in prison. The episode has received widespread attention as the Trump administration has deployed federal agents to canvass Washington neighborhoods and temporarily taken control of the city's police department to curb what Trump has depicted as a crime emergency in the U.S. capital, though statistics show violent crime has fallen sharply since 2023. The increased federal presence has drawn a mixed response from residents of the overwhelmingly Democratic city. Several agents on patrol in the Navy Yard neighborhood were occasionally heckled on Wednesday night, with one onlooker warning others to "hide your kids, hide your wives" and criticizing their bulletproof vests. Dunn was charged with assaulting, resisting and impeding officers after he allegedly threw the sandwich at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent on Sunday night. Dunn allegedly called the officers "fascists" and yelled "I don't want you in my city!" before "winding his arm back and forcefully throwing a sub-style sandwich" at the agent, according to a criminal complaint. Dunn was taken into custody at the scene and admitted to throwing the sandwich, according to the charging document. The officer did not appear to be injured, according to a video on social media. Dunn was taken into custody again overnight on Thursday after the federal charge was filed. Dunn's arrest was one of nine the FBI was involved in on Wednesday night in Washington, ranging from low-level drug offenses to illegal gun possession, according to a different Justice Department official. Around midnight on Wednesday, more than a dozen agents took a man into custody in the Brightwood neighborhood for driving without a license after they pulled him over for driving with overly tinted windows. A local resident, who identified herself as Miss Anne, said the increased law enforcement was not necessarily a bad thing. 'There's a lot of things happening so if this makes things better they are welcome,' she said. 'Does it need to be this much force? We will have to see.' — Reuters

Justice Dept. fires, charges staffer who admits throwing sandwich at federal agent deployed in D.C.

A man who admitted throwing a sandwich at a federal law enforcement officer deployed in Washington, D.C., worked at the Justice Department and has been fired, Attorney General Pam Bondi said Thursday. According to charging documents, Sean Dunn allegedly threw a "submarine-style sandwich" at a Customs and Border Patrol officer stationed at a busy intersection in Northwest Washington, D.C., on Sunday. In video of the incident that was cited in the charges, Dunn can be seen yelling at the agent and other officers in his vicinity before throwing the wrapped sandwich at the officer's chest. Dunn attempted to flee on foot before being apprehended, documents and video of the incident shows. According to the affidavit, Dunn yelled, "F*** you! You f***ing fascists! Why are you here? I don't want you in my city," before crossing the street. He later returned and threw the sandwich. Dunn, according to the documents, confessed after he was arrested, telling law enforcement, "I did it. I threw a sandwich." In a post on X Thursday, Bondi wrote she had "just learned that this defendant worked at the Department of Justice — NO LONGER. Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony." "This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ," Bondi continued. "You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement." According to Dunn's LinkedIn page, he was a trial attorney at the Justice Department. He is charged with one count of assaulting federal law enforcement. No plea has been entered in the case, nor has a hearing been scheduled, as of Thursday afternoon. CBS News has reached out to his attorney. Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., said in a video announcing the arrest that her office is "going to back the police to the hilt. So there, stick your Subway sandwich somewhere else." Federal law enforcement and National Guard members were deployed to the District of Columbia this week in an attempt to stop crime in the nation's capital, despite data showing crime has declined in the city in recent years.
