Chow Yun Fat returns to Star Awards after three decades

Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun Fat will be gracing the Star Awards 2025 ceremony on July 6 as an award presenter. Three decades ago, the veteran actor was a celebrity guest at the inaugural ceremony in 1994, where he presented awards to the winners of the Top 5 Most Popular Male Artistes. During the show, he noted that local actor Li Nanxing resembled him, and said: "Please don't come to Hong Kong, or else I will not be able to make movies any more." Chow, 70, has won three Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Actor and two Golden Horse Awards for Best Actor. He also received the prestigious Asian Film-maker of the Year accolade at the Busan International Film Festival in 2023, in recognition of his significant contributions to the advancement of the Asian film industry and culture. Joining the A-list line-up at Star Awards 2025 is another Hong Kong thespian, Sean Lau. The 61-year-old previously attended the 2000 edition, where he read out the winners of the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes. Local singer Kit Chan will take the stage to perform a medley of songs from memorable series over the years. Sean Lau on showbiz awards: 'Your success or failure today doesn't determine your tomorrow', Entertainment News

While veteran Hong Kong actor Sean Lau has won multiple best actor awards over his four decades in showbiz, he doesn't take these achievements for granted. The 61-year-old is set to grace Star Awards 2025 this Sunday (July 6) and spoke to AsiaOne recently ahead of the ceremony. He said: "Awards and nominations are forms of encouragement to and recognition of actors and the awards ceremony has a positive publicity effect for the entire industry, to let the audience pay more attention to the developments and trends in the industry. "Winning an award is definitely something to be happy about, but your success or failure today doesn't determine your tomorrow, so awards shouldn't be used to judge whether an actor is good or bad." Sean won three best actor awards this year for his performance in the critically acclaimed family drama film Papa (2024), where he plays a father who navigates survivor guilt and seek reconciliation with his mentally unstable son who killed the latter's mother and sister. He added to us that there are a few factors which determine a good actor. "Be respectful, strive to keep exploring and have the courage to try [different characters and acting styles]," he shared. Sean last attended Star Awards in 2000, where he presented the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes award with his wife, former actress Amy Kwok. When asked how he felt about attending the awards after more than two decades, he told us: "Time flies, but I am glad to see that Singapore has been able to retain its local characteristics while developing rapidly in many aspects." As for one local dish he must eat every time he visits, he said: "White pepper crab, because that is Mrs Lau's favourite." On July 6, Backstage Live will be presented from 3.30pm to 10.30pm, Walk of Fame from 5pm to 6.30pm, and the awards show from 7pm to 10pm and Post-Party from 10pm to 10.30pm. The Walk of Fame and awards show will air on Channel 8, Channel U, Mewatch and the Mediacorp Entertainment YouTube channel, Post-Party will air on Channel U, Mewatch and the Mediacorp Entertainment YouTube channel, while Backstage Live will air on the latter two platforms.
