Red Sox Discussing Blockbuster Trade for Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Report
Red Sox Discussing Blockbuster Trade for Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox have their hands all over the starting pitching trade market. They have been connected to both Arizona Diamondbacks starters and are one of six teams said to be interested in San Diego Padres' Dylan Cease. Their search for a rotational upgrade continued on Friday, when, according to Sean McAdam of the Red Sox discussed a trade with the Miami Marlins involving ace Sandy Alcantara. Although no names have been exchanged yet, according to Adams, Alcantara already has his bags packed in anticipation of an eventual move, per MLB insider Hector Gomez. Trading for Alcantara is a risk. The former Cy Young winner struggled in his return from Tommy John surgery, seeing his ERA balloon to above 7.00 at one point. However, the timing might be perfect for the Red Sox to make a deal for Alcantara. In his two starts since the All-Star break, the right-hander has a 2.77 ERA through 13 innings, which includes a dominant seven-inning shutout performance in his last start against the Padres. If Alcantara can build off his last two outings and become a more consistent version of himself in the second half, the Red Sox should pounce at the opportunity to get a deal done. Behind ace Garrett Crochet and the surprise reemergence of Lucas Giolito, Boston does not possess a formidable rotation that can hold up against the league's top offenses come the postseason. Inserting Alcantara, whether behind Crochet or as the anchor, should better set up the Red Sox to keep their current Wild Card standings, if not make a strong push for the AL East division title. Red Sox could target $8.2 million Cardinals All-Star to boost bullpen
The Boston Red Sox head into the All-Star break on a high note after closing the first half of the 2025 season with a 10-game winning streak. The team is 52-45 and in sole possession of the second American League Wild Card spot. While some thought they would be sellers at the trade deadline after the Rafael Devers deal, that may not be the case now. They are a contender and could use some help in the coming weeks. Advertisement They'll need a little bit of help with their bullpen, as beyond closer Aroldis Chapman, there are question marks. A little help at the back end certainly wouldn't hurt. Sean McAdam of proposed the idea of Boston trading for St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley. "It's possible the Sox could acquire a closer like Ryan Helsley or Pittsburgh's David Bednar and utilize him in the eighth," McAdam said. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Helsley saved 49 games last year, setting a Cardinals franchise record and earning National League Reliever of the Year honors. Advertisement This year, the 30-year-old right-hander hasn't been quite as dominant, posting a 3.27 ERA in 33 appearances, but he has still recorded 19 saves with St. Louis. The two-time All-Star could help Boston form a deadly combination at the back end of its bullpen in the second half of the season. Two proven closers will give the Red Sox a great chance to reach the postseason and potentially even gain ground in the AL East. The Red Sox will have to give up a good deal of prospects for the All-Star closer if they decide to trade for him. However, they have a strong farm system and could easily pull off a deal. We'll see where the Red Sox land in their search for bullpen help. More MLB: Red Sox's interest in trade for former Cy Young winner revealed
