Wexford ease into Tailteann Cup quarter-final with an 11 point win over Antrim
Tailteann Cup preliminary quarter-final: Wexford 5-23 (5-4-15) Antrim 2-21 (2-5-11) AN eleven point victory did not flatter Wexford as they cruised into the quarter-finals at the expense of a disappointing Antrim outfit in this Tailteann Cup senior football game played at Chadwicks Wexford Park. For Wexford it was a welcome victory over the Saffron county who on their previous two visits to the model county had come away with victories, but there was never going to be a repeat as the homeside took control in the second quarter to go on to a comfortable victory. While Antrim playing into the breeze took the lead in the opening minute through a Conor Hand point, this was the only time in the game that they led, with home keeper Darragh Brooks pointing his side level almost immediately from a 45, while on six minutes Martin O'Connor moved through the defence to point the homeside in front. Antrim got back level through a Dominic McEnhill point, but with Sean Nolan storming into the game with a two pointed free followed by a further free, Wexford led 0-5 to 0-2. Wexford continued to stretch their lead as Sean Nolan found the net, a score which helped them into a 1-12 to 0-4 lead after twenty-seven minutes. As the homeside continued to widen the gap with Martin O'Connor setting up Ben Brosnan goal leaving them with a 2-14 to 0-7 interval lead. When Wexford stretched the led immediately on the resumption through points from Pairic Hughes and Jack Higgins, Antrim came under more intense pressure, despite the homeside losing Martin O'Connor with a leg injury. The scores continued to flow for the homeside as Sean Nolan added his second goal, while a Mark Rossiter further goal on fifty-seven minutes had them leading 4-10 to 0-11. As Wexford relaxed their grip on the game, Antrim managed a Patrick Finnegan goal ten minutes from the end, followed by a Dominic McEnhill goal reducing the deficit to 4-23 to 2-14, but just to show their control, Wexford finished with a Robbie Brooks goal giving them a real boost for a tougher test that lies ahead. Five-goal Wexford knock Antrim out of Tailteann Cup
Antrim's season ended in dismal fashion as they crashed out of the Tailteann Cup with a 5-23 to 2-21 defeat by Wexford in the preliminary quarter-finals. Having narrowly earned a spot in the prelims as the third best of the third-placed teams in the round-robin stage, Andy McEntee's side hoped to stage another stirring run through the knockout rounds after back-to-back semi-final appearances in 2023 and 2024. Advertisement But they were well beaten in Wexford Park as they were put to the sword by the Model County's full-forward line of Sean Nolan (2-3), Ben Brosnan (1-2) and Jack Higgins (0-3). Goals from Nolan and Brosnan, and a couple of Darragh Brooks two-pointers, helped Wexford establish a commanding 2-14 to 0-7 lead at the break. And John Hegarty's side pulled clear after the restart and led by 22 points at 4-21 to 0-11 with 12 minutes left after Nolan and Mark Rossiter added to their goal tally. To Antrim's credit, they refused to give up as quickfire goals by Patrick Finnegan and Dominic McEnhill and three two-pointers helped them reduce the deficit to eight points. Advertisement However, substitute Robbie Brooks added a fifth goal for Wexford to bring the curtain down on a disappointing year for Antrim, who were also relegated from Division Three. Fermanagh, who qualified for the quarter-finals by topping their group, are the sole Ulster representation left in this year's Tailteann Cup.

Carlow rescue dramatic draw against Wexford
Tailteann Cup group 4: Carlow 2-16 (2-1-14) Wexford 1-19 (1-2-15) Carlow salvaged a point in this Tailteann Cup second round game at Netwatch Cullen Park on Sunday. Going into injury time, the home side trailed by four points. John Phiri slotted a point to leave only three in it. One last attack saw Ross Dunphy fouled just inside the big square and from the resultant spot-kick, Carlow midfielder, Conor Doyle, beat Darragh Brooks. The home side had started well with points from Dunphy, John Murphy and Kevin Murphy (free). Eoghan Nolan nailed a two-pointer for the visitors. Sean Nolan added a point to level. Carlow were unlucky to see Conor Crowley's rocket fly off the upright. Kevin O'Grady ended the half with three points from play for Wexford while Sean Nolan also raised two white flags. A 23rd minute raid by Mikey Bambrick almost yielded a Carlow goal but the woodwork intervened. He did the same in the second half. It looked as if the home side were out of luck. Wexford led 0-9 to 0-8 at the break. Nolan extended that lead with a free. Carlow hit back and Niall Hickey landed a two-pointer from play. Sean Murphy and Ciaran Moran also pointed. The visitors responded and were rewarded with two Nolan points. Martin O'Connor scored their goal when he found the bottom left-hand corner of the net on 45 minutes. Liam O'Connor, Liam Coleman and Jack Higgins points put Wexford six clear with six minutes left on the clock. It was looking grim for Carlow. Their hopes rose a little when Dunphy got in behind the Wexford defence for a goal. Wexford came back but missed chances which might have killed off Carlow. They paid for this as the home side mounted those two last attacks and found a way to maintain their unbeaten record in the competition.
