Five-goal Wexford knock Antrim out of Tailteann Cup

Yahoo08-06-2025
Antrim's season ended in dismal fashion as they crashed out of the Tailteann Cup with a 5-23 to 2-21 defeat by Wexford in the preliminary quarter-finals.
Having narrowly earned a spot in the prelims as the third best of the third-placed teams in the round-robin stage, Andy McEntee's side hoped to stage another stirring run through the knockout rounds after back-to-back semi-final appearances in 2023 and 2024.

But they were well beaten in Wexford Park as they were put to the sword by the Model County's full-forward line of Sean Nolan (2-3), Ben Brosnan (1-2) and Jack Higgins (0-3).
Goals from Nolan and Brosnan, and a couple of Darragh Brooks two-pointers, helped Wexford establish a commanding 2-14 to 0-7 lead at the break.
And John Hegarty's side pulled clear after the restart and led by 22 points at 4-21 to 0-11 with 12 minutes left after Nolan and Mark Rossiter added to their goal tally.
To Antrim's credit, they refused to give up as quickfire goals by Patrick Finnegan and Dominic McEnhill and three two-pointers helped them reduce the deficit to eight points.

However, substitute Robbie Brooks added a fifth goal for Wexford to bring the curtain down on a disappointing year for Antrim, who were also relegated from Division Three.
Fermanagh, who qualified for the quarter-finals by topping their group, are the sole Ulster representation left in this year's Tailteann Cup.

Wales stars must 'want a piece of Lions action'

British and Irish Lions' Welsh chairman Ieuan Evans has urged Jac Morgan's leading compatriots to set their sights on making the 2029 tour to New Zealand. Morgan was originally one of only two Welshmen in the touring squad and won two caps off the bench as Andy Farrell's side beat Australia 2-1. He scored a try in Saturday's final Test defeat in Sydney and was at the centre of the tour's most controversial moment in the second. Morgan's clearout on Carlo Tizzano at a ruck in the build-up to Hugo Keenan's winning second-Test try was deemed legal. Debate over that incident has continued to rage, but Evans wants Morgan's impact at home to serve as inspiration. 'That needs to drive players to say 'ok, I want a piece of the action. I want to be playing in four years time in New Zealand'," said former Wales and Lions wing Evans. "Fingers crossed that the future is bright for Welsh rugby and the Welsh national team.'' Farrell named Morgan and Gloucester scrum-half Tomos Williams in his original squad, but the latter was ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury in the opening game in Australia. The Ospreys star was omitted from the first Test, but after entering the fray in the second in Melbourne, played a crucial part in the late drama that sealed the series. ''If you weren't captured by the drama of that second Test at the MCG then, quite frankly, you haven't got a soul," said Evans. "That was exactly what a sporting legacy is all about, that's what sport is supposed to do at such an iconic venue as the MCG.' ''If I'd have had a lifestyle watch on at the time, 'it'd have probably told me to go to ER very, very quickly. "But we got the result and it was a remarkable performance and again, one of character.'' Lions player ratings - the incredible, the unlucky & the poor Farrell in 'really good place' to lead Lions again What was the best winning Lions tour? Goodwill from the players 'important' While there are no plans to move away from the traditional touring schedule of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, Evans says a full review of the past few weeks will take place. The Lions are open to freshening up the tour format to bolster the matches before the Test series, which were largely underwhelming in Australia. ''Obviously New Zealand brings different parameters around touring. But the players have had a great time and we'll make sure that's the case because that goodwill from the players, is really important and you've got to keep replenishing that. "You can't rely on it because hubris gets everybody eventually. You can't just assume that this is the norm and everybody is going to love this for eternity. "We'll look, we'll assess, so we can do things differently.''

Louth beat Antrim to win All-Ireland Junior title

Antrim were denied a first All-Ireland Junior Football Championship since 2022 after losing to Louth by 0-13 to 1-9 at Croke Park. Bronagh Devlin netted a third-minute penalty for the Saffrons after Theresa Mellon was fouled within the square. Aoife Russell cancelled out another swift point by Mellon, but Antrim extended their advantage through Omolara Dahunsi. Dahunsi responded to back-to-back points from Louth forwards Russell and Ceire Nolan, and the Saffrons' advantage was cut further after Kate Flood and Shannen McLaughlin capitalised on Devlin's yellow card. Louth held a 0-8 to 1-4 advantage at the break after a score by captain Aine Breen and two points from Flood. Maria O'Neill got Antrim back on level terms early in the second half, but Eimear Byrne soon restored Louth's advantage. Louth, who lost the 2024 decider to Fermanagh, put one hand on the title when Flood, Breen, Mia Duffy and Lucy White put them five points clear in the closing stages. Antrim rallied late on through Ana Mulholland, Mellon and a late O'Neill point, but Louth had enough in hand to get over the line. Louth: R Lambe Fagan; R Beirth, E Hand, E Murray; H Lambe Sally, S McLaughlin, L Byrne; A Breen, A Halligan; L White, E Byrne, S Matthews; A Russell, K Flood, C Nolan. Subs: M Duffy for Matthews (42), L Collins for Russell (56), G McCrave for Lambe Sally, Z Sweeney for White (both 59). Antrim: A Devlin; N McIntosh, M Blaney, M Mulholland; S O'Neill, C Brown, C McKenna; A Mulholland, A Tubridy; T Mellon, M O'Neill, Aoife Kelly; B Devlin, O Dahunsi, L Agnew. Subs: A Turley for Tubridy, A Monaghan for Kelly (both 39), B Nic Cathail for Agnew (47), N Jones for B Devlin, Aine Kelly for McKenna (both 56).

Exciting' Dijksteel arrives early at St Mirren

St Mirren have paid an undisclosed fee to bring "exciting" 24-year-old winger Malik Dijksteel to Paisley six months early from Cork City. The Scottish Premiership club announced last week the Dutchman had signed a pre-contract agreement to join them when his deal with the League of Ireland club was due to expire in January. Cork manager Gerard Nash then claimed after Friday's League of Ireland Premier Division defeat by Sligo Rovers that Dijksteel's agent had made the winger unavailable for the game after St Mirren's approach had been rebuffed. Saints manager Stephen Robinson had denied any knowledge of that, but is now pleased to "add another bit of creativity and pace into the team" on a contract until summer 2028. How is your Premiership club shaping up for new season? Who has your Premiership club brought in & let go? - summer 2025 Robinson said that, with Conor McMenamin out injured, "we didn't have the wide players" who could "change games in 1v1 situations" since Christmas last season. "We believe Malik brings that real, real pace," he said. "A real exciting signing for us." Robinson, though, stressed that "there's no guarantees" and Dijksteel would have to "fight to get into the team" who qualified from their Premier Sports Cup group. However, he pointed out that: "He comes match ready because he's been playing at Cork as well the last three games." Once a youth with Feyenoord, Dijksteel joined defender brother Anfernee at Middlesbroough before moving to Whitby Town and Wrexham before signing for Cork in 2023. He has made 11 appearances this season, scoring once, but is "delighted" to be able to join St Mirren earlier than planned for a full season. "It allows me to get to know the manager and get to know how he works," he told St Mirren's website. "The manager said he wants me to be me and be the player that I am. He wants me to beat players, excite the fans and work hard. That's what you want to hear as a winger. "I've watched some of the games on TV. You don't know until you're in it yourself, but it looks like a good level and I'm looking forward to it."
