Crew Review, Week 12: "Hell Is Real"

The biggest regular season Crew game of the year is approaching with an archrival headed to town. MLS record: 7-1-4, 25 points. 2nd in the East, 3rd in MLS. On the field: The Crew eked out a true "this is what good teams do" 2-2 draw on the road against then-second place Philadelphia. Columbus was largely outplayed, but Sean Zawadzki's equalizer in the 93rd minute helped steal a point. Columbus travels to struggling Montréal on Wednesday at 7:30pm, while FC Cincinnati also visits Canada to play Toronto FC. Then the focus is on " Hell Is Real" at Field at 7pm Saturday. The rivalry is named after the infamous I-71 billboard situated between the two cities. The intrigue: Both teams are even getting special jerseys with hell-inspired numbers designed by local artists. The big picture: These teams don't like each other, but they're also among the best in MLS. Cincinnati passed Columbus last weekend to sit atop the East, making for yet another rivalry game with a lot on the line. Fun fact: If both take care of business in their midweek matches, Saturday will be the Crew's third match featuring the Eastern Conference's No. 1 and 2 teams in a six-game stretch. What we're watching: Their respective stars are scorching hot.

Zawadzki's stoppage-time goal helps Crew play Union to a 2-2 tie

CHESTER, Pa. (AP) — Sean Zawadzki scored in the third minute of stoppage time for Columbus and the Crew played to a 2-2 tie with the Philadelphia Union on Saturday night in a match between two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Columbus (7-1-4) has 25 points, tied with Cincinnati for most in the Eastern Conference and two more than the Union. Zawadzki redirected a header by Diego Luna, off a corner kick played in by Dylan Chamost, into the net from point-blank range to cap the scoring. Tai Baribo opened the scoring in the 45th minute with his ninth goal of the season, tying his career high set in 2024. Quinn Sullivan, streaking down the right side, ran onto a long free kick played ahead by goalkeeper Andrew Rick and then fed Baribo for a one-touch finish from the edge of the 6-yard box. Max Arfsten made it 1-1 in the 61st, when he skipped a volley, off an arcing cross played by Dylan Chambost, inside the far post. Francis Westfield scored his first MLS goal in the 64th. Baribo, at the edge of the 6-yard box, fell to the ground as he tapped a pass out to the 19-year-old homegrown, whose one-touch finish from the top of the box gave the Union a 2-1 lead. Philadelphia (7-3-2) outshot the Crew 16-10 but had just 35% possession. ___ AP soccer:
