Kerry community coming together to renovate 140 year old building
Despite its age the building remains a vibrant hub in the town but given its historic existence more renovation works are required to ensure its continued use, this time on the roof.
Over the years ongoing renovations have helped upgrade the building after it ended its time as a school in the community.
Generations of local children were educated there from 1886 -1974 when it closed but for some time the rooms continued to be used for extra school space. However, since 1988 it has been in the hands of the community.
It was passed over by the Diocese to Killorglin Community Council, Killorglin Pantomime Group, and Killorglin Youth Club and these three groups are represented via Directors on Seanscoil Ltd.
The roof was last refurbished in 1955 and now badly needs more works. Some of the original slates from Valentia date back to 1886.
Seanscoil Ltd have been approved for a grant of €128,750 from Kerry County Council but will have a considerable shortfall and with this in mind have reached out to the community to raise the remaining funds.
"It is very important to the community, it is very busy. It is great to see so much going on there,' said chairperson Declan Mangan.
He is now asking for funds from near and far to help ensure the works can be carried out and in particular he is asking past pupils of the community to support the cause.
