New On Netflix, Disney+, And More: 7 Streaming Shows And Movies To Watch This Week (May 19-25)

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The end of May is a bit of a different animal on streaming platforms. It seems like every week in recent memory, we've seen the beginning of some sort of high-profile dramatic series on one streaming platform or another. And while some of those shows are still ongoing, most notably Peacock's Poker Face, there's a bit less 'new' in that regard this week. That's not to say there isn't some absolutely great stuff you won't want to miss. It's just a fairly eclectic list, and while it's unlikely you'll be interested in everything debuting this week, there's almost certain to be at least one thing to check out. Travel shows aren't everybody's cup of tea, but rarely have we seen one that's hosted by somebody as engaging as the great Stanley Tucci. The NatGeo documentary series, also available with a Disney+ subscription, Tucci in Italy, a follow-up to his previous Searching For Italy series, sees the actor explore the nation via its food. Get ready to be very hungry. Brett Favre was once one of the biggest stars in the world of professional football, but as the title suggests, The Fall of Brett Favre will be looking at a different side of the athlete, including alleged off-the-field misdeeds, including a reported mishandling of government money for his own benefit. The first season of Nine Perfect Strangers only got middle-of-the-road reviews, but it clearly did something right as it's back for a second season. A new star-studded cast and a new location form around Nicole Kidman as a guru with some unorthodox methods to help people heal. Late May is prime summer movie season, and while that usually means having to go to a theater, one new film that seems just perfect for this time of year will only be available with an Apple TV+ subscription. Fountain of Youth stars John Krasinski and Natalie Portman as siblings searching for the fabled source of eternal youth. Guy Ritchie directed what feels like the closest thing to National Treasure 3 we're likely to get. It's a good idea in general for horror fans to have a Netflix subscription, and that's especially the case this week. R.L. Stine's Fear Street books have been turned into films three times previously, and each time with solid results. Now, get ready for the fourth installment, Prom Queen. A generation grew up with Pee-wee Herman, but the actor and comedian's untimely death robbed fans of years of fun. A new two-part documentary series, Pee-wee as Himself, available with a Max subscription, will take fans inside the head of Pee-Wee Herman, quite literally, as it will include significant interviews with Paul Reubens made before he passed away. Pamela Anderson was one of the hottest stars of the 1990s, but she came roaring back to the screens last year in The Last Showgirl. Anderson won numerous awards for her portrayal of an aging showgirl, showing just what a great actress she's always been. You can now check out her performance with a Hulu subscription. Next week sees May come to an end and June get started. If nothing else, this will mean a flood of library content hitting most streaming services, so check back here so we can help you make sense of it all.

Stanley Tucci says he discovered his thyroid ‘was non-functioning' while filming in Italy last year

Stanley Tucci experienced a delayed effect of cancer treatment from years ago that caused him a fair amount of concern. On a recent episode of 'David Tennant Does a Podcast With…,' the 'Conclave' star described feeling 'so tired in the afternoon' while filming episodes of his 'Searching For Italy' show last year. 'Like completely exhausted by one o'clock and I was like, 'something's wrong with me,'' Tucci added. He said he proceeded to get a blood test that revealed that his 'thyroid was non-functioning.' Tucci explained that he and his doctors then tried to discern what was causing the issue, ruling out stress, cholesterol or other possible factors. 'What happened was because I had radiation six, seven years ago, it burned out my thyroid,' Tucci said. In 2021, the actor revealed he had been treated for a tumor at the base of his tongue three years prior, which involved high-dose radiation and chemotherapy. This week, he said that his oncologist informed him that delayed thyroid issues can sometimes happen as a result of the treatment he received, and that he now takes medication which has 'made a huge difference.' Elsewhere in the podcast, Tucci reflected on mortality and aging, saying that it leaves him feeling 'a hundred percent sad, (and) a hundred percent motivated,' adding that 'there's a letting go.' 'That can be a good thing, but that can also just be, let it go,' the actor said. 'Do you know what I mean? It's alright. You're never going to have that thing. That's never going to work for you. That's gone.'

King and Queen to host Stanley Tucci ahead of Italy state visit

King Charles and Queen Camilla are to host actor Stanley Tucci at a formal dinner on Friday evening to mark the confirmation of a state visit to Italy later this year. The royal couple will travel to Italy in April and meet Pope Francis and Italian leaders, as well as carry out engagements in Rome and the ancient city of Ravenna, Buckingham Palace has confirmed. It is expected to coincide with the King and Queen's 20th wedding anniversary on 9 April. Tucci - who presented Searching For Italy, a BBC programme celebrating Italian food and culture - will make a speech at an event at the royals' Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire. The Palace's confirmation of the state visit to Italy suggests the King is well enough for an overseas journey, as he continues with his cancer treatment. Tucci - an American of Italian descent starred in the Oscar-nominated Vatican thriller Conclave and has spoken about his experiences of throat cancer, which he said adversely affected his sense of taste. The Italian-inspired evening at Highgrove will also be attended by the Italian ambassador to the UK, Inigo Lambertini. Chef Francesco Mazzei will use local ingredients to cook an Italian menu, with the dishes reflecting the "slow food" style of cooking, which advocates fresh, regional dishes cooked in traditional ways. Mixologist Alessandro Palazzi will be on hand to make drinks using Italian flavours and herbs grown at Highgrove. The King - an enthusiast for art, culture and religion - has been a regular visitor to Italy, with this upcoming trip to be his 18th official visit. State visits are carried out on behalf of the Foreign Office and there are likely to be meetings with senior Italian government figures - an effort to build relations with an important European partner - though full details of the itinerary are still to be revealed. While there, the King and Queen may celebrate 20 years since their wedding in April 2005. The date of the ceremony had to be changed because of the death of Pope John Paul II, with the then Prince Charles travelling to Rome to attend the funeral. The visit to meet Pope Francis also coincides with 2025 being a special "jubilee" year for the Catholic church, held every 25 years. The King and Queen will join the Pope for the celebrations as "Pilgrims of Hope", according to the Palace. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip visited the Pope on the last such jubilee year in 2000. The King has met Pope Francis on previous occasions, including at the Vatican in 2019 when the English-born Cardinal John Henry Newman was canonised as a saint. This will be the first time they have met since Charles became monarch and supreme governor of the Church of England.
