REPORT: Oilers Checked In On Top Goalie Prospect

EDMONTON – The worst-kept secret in hockey right now is the Edmonton Oilers' need for a goaltender. Recent comments from insider Cam Robinson suggest that the Oilers have poked around a couple of goaltender prospects outside of Michael DiPietro of the Boston Bruins and Nico Daws of the New Jersey Devils. Bowman addressed that need earlier in the offseason by letting goaltending coach Dustin Schwartz's contract expire and bringing on Peter Aubry from the Chicago Blackhawks organization. Robinson of Elite Prospects appeared on Monday's edition of The Sekeres and Price Show, a Vancouver Canucks focused radio show/podcast. On the August 11th episode, he focused on the Oilers goalie search and a few players the Oilers have checked in on. 'I believe the first person they asked about was Trey Augustine,' Robinson revealed on the show. 'I think that was just a non-starter. Steve Yzerman and company really love that kid.' 'But, they have a 6-foot-6, 6-foot-7 former first-rounder in Sebastian Cossa sitting there who's slowly been progressing.' Oilers Eyeing Trade for Former Oil Kings Goaltender? The Edmonton Oilers could be exploring a move to bolster their goaltending depth, and recent comments from team insider Bob Stauffer have sparked speculation that Detroit Red Wings prospect Sebastian Cossa might be a target. Trey Augustine is a 20-year-old goalie who is returning to Michigan State University in the NCAA this year. The 6-foot-1, 183 lb prospect was taken 41st overall in the 2023 draft. This past season, he posted a 2.08 goals against average (GAA), a .924 save percentage (SV%), three shutouts, and 19 wins in 30 games. On the other hand, Sebastian Cossa is listed as 6-foot-6 and 229 lb on the Detroit Red Wings website. The 15th overall pick of the 2021 draft played 41 games in the AHL and one NHL game. In the AHL, he boasted a record of 21-15-5 to go along with a 2.45 GAA, a .911 SV%, and one shutout. Cossa's NHL appearance came in relief of Ville Husso during the Red Wings' December 9th game against the Buffalo Sabres. In just over two periods of play, only two goals were scored on him on 14 shots. Who would you rather see the Oilers acquire: Augustine or Cossa? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll. NHL Trade Rumors: Edmonton Oilers are considering bold goalie trade involving Detroit's prized prospect Sebastian Cossa

Oilers are reportedly exploring a trade for Detroit Red Wings' goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa (Imagn Images) The Edmonton Oilers' search for a dependable starting goaltender has become a hot topic across the NHL . While many expected the team to focus on established free agents like Carter Hart, recent whispers reveal that Oilers GM Stan Bowman might be eyeing a more daring move—targeting Detroit Red Wings' highly regarded goalie prospect, Sebastian Cossa. Why the Oilers are looking beyond free agents for goaltending stability The Oilers have made no secret of their goaltending struggles, which have repeatedly hampered their championship aspirations despite having superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the lineup. With free agent Carter Hart frequently mentioned as a potential fix, Edmonton's front office appears willing to explore riskier avenues for a long-term solution. Their initial inquiry into Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine reportedly hit a dead end, but the interest quickly shifted to Cossa. Drafted 15th overall in 2021, Cossa stands out due to his size, agility, and sharp decision-making skills in net. He's praised not just as a shot-stopper but as an active goalie who reads plays intelligently—a skill set that the Oilers desperately need to stabilize their crease. The high cost and risk involved in pursuing sebastian cossa Detroit's GM Steve Yzerman is known for safeguarding his top prospects, especially a goalie he traded up to acquire. Insider chatter suggests Yzerman's asking price for Cossa could be top forward prospect Isaac Howard, a promising scorer who has been lighting up the minors. Stan Bowman's willingness to consider trading Howard signals how serious the Oilers are about maximizing their current window. 'This is a massive gamble,' says an NHL insider, 'but with McDavid and Draisaitl in their prime, Edmonton can't afford to let inconsistent goaltending cost them another season.' Detroit Red Wings NHL Draft guide: Picks, best fits and analysis

The Detroit Red Wings have nine picks in the 2025 NHL Draft: Nos. 13, 44, 75, 76, 119, 140, 172, 204, 211. Here's what to expect. Detroit has done a good job building out its premium positions. The Red Wings have centers and defensemen of the future, and a strong goalie prospect in Sebastian Cossa. I like their young forwards they have coming, but they truly lack guys in their system who can put the puck in the net and put up points. The Red Wings enter the draft in a tricky spot, with 13 right around the range where the top names at premium positions could be off the board. While Steve Yzerman started his GM tenure in Detroit with a major curveball, shocking the arena by picking Moritz Seider, the Red Wings have become a bit easier to predict in the years since. Detroit has tended to prioritize hockey sense and competitiveness high in the draft, and needs an infusion of skill and playmaking up front. Advertisement Perhaps the Red Wings get a bit lucky and a top center or defenseman falls into their lap, but more likely, there is a solid group of potential top-six wingers right around their range, headlined by speedy Swede Victor Eklund, gritty WHL winger Carter Bear, high-skilled QMJHL winger Justin Carbonneau, and slick but competitive WHL forward Cole Reschny, who does have a chance to stick at center despite his smaller size. Any of those players would add needed skill to Detroit's farm system, while still bringing the competitive baseline the franchise covets. — Max Bultman, Red Wings beat reporter In recent mock drafts, Corey Pronman has projected the following picks: 13. Victor Eklund, RW 44. Eddie Genborg, RW 75. Brady Peddle, D 76. Michal Pradel, G 119. Asher Barnett, D 140. Reese Hamilton, D 172. Aiden Foster, C 204. Makar Fomin, D 211.
