Nation's rich heritage showcased at music, cultural exchange in Nagoya

KUCHING (Aug 12): Sarawak's The Band Lab showcased the nation's rich heritage at the Sarawak-Japan Music and Cultural Exchange 2025 in Nagoya, Japan last Sunday. The vibrant display of musical unity and cultural exchange unfolded at Aikodai Meiden High School in the event, which marked a significant milestone following the success of last year's Sarawak International Band and Orchestra Festival (SIBOFest), according to a press release. Organised and coordinated by its sister branch, The Band Lab Japan, the performance was a key highlight of the exchange trip, which also included participation in the Ninth Gamagori City International Band Festival and further collaborations with other renowned Japanese high school bands. The afternoon's grand performance featured approximately 70 musicians, including members from Aikodai Meiden High School Symphonic Band, The Band Lab Japan, and The Band Lab Kuching. A distinguished delegation from Sarawak, coincidentally in Japan for the Osaka Expo for Sarawak Week, also attended the event. Among them were Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah's wife Datin Sri Zuraini Abdul Jabbar; Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Datuk Sebastian Ting; Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat, Sarawak Tourism Board chief executive officer Sharzede Salleh Askor, and Business Events Sarawak chief executive officer Amelia Roziman. The musicians highlighted local Malaysian and Sarawakian music such as 'Bunga Raya Concert March', composed by up-and-coming local composer Yeo Chow Shern; the patriotic 'Tanah Pusaka'; and a captivating rendition of the traditional Kenyah folk song, 'Leleng', composed by local composer and The Band Lab Kuching member Anthony Wong. The afternoon concluded with an energetic performance of 'Deep Purple Medley', arranged by Toshihiko Sahashi. The performances were conducted by The Band Lab founder and president Jesmond Siew, and Aikodai Meiden High School Symphonic Band resident conductor Maestro Hiroki Ito. Ting, who represented Abdul Karim, commended the unwavering efforts of the organisers, and expressed gratitude to The Band Lab Japan founder and president Kana Yamamoto and Siew for facilitating this invaluable cultural exchange. He remarked: 'The ministry remains committed to supporting initiatives and bilateral exchanges between Sarawak and Japan, such as SIBOFest, which foster deeper cultural understanding and strengthen international ties through the universal language of music.' cultural exchange Japan lead Sebastian Ting The Band Lab

MIRI (July 29): The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Piasau service centre will hold a mobile service programme for Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) and Senior Citizen Health Benefits (SCHB) applications this weekend from 9am-4pm at the Miri Indoor Stadium. The programme is a joint effort between SUPP Piasau's committee, Youth and Women wings and the Sarawak Welfare Department Miri. The event will facilitate immediate issuance of KGC with a 'same day application and collection' service at the venue so applicants can receive their cards on-site upon successful registration. Sarawakians aged 60 and above who hold MyKad with 'K' status are eligible to apply for the Kenyalang Gold Card. To apply, they are advised to bring along photocopies of their MyKad (front and back) and that of their guardian or next-of-kin during the application. Eligible KGC holders may also apply for the SCHB, which offers up to RM500 in annual medical aid at participating clinics. The programme's organising chairman, Miri City Council councillor Kelvin Chia said the event was returning after high public demand, following two similar successful programmes. 'Our branch chairman Datuk Sebastian Ting, who is also Piasau assemblyman and Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, wants to ensure applicants receive the best service possible and get their Kenyalang Gold Cards on the spot. 'Therefore, he is working with the welfare department to provide this convenient service to those applying for the KGC and SCHB programme,' he said. He added that applicants may also register online via the link and collect their card immediately at the Miri Indoor Stadium. 'For on-site registration, please bring photocopies of the applicant's and next-of-kin's (if any) MyKad (front and back),' he reminded. Deputy Minister: Unity stands as true foundation of Sarawak's stability, progress

MIRI (July 8): Sarawak's remarkable transformation from a resources-based state to a leader in high technology, green energy and smart city development is only possible through strong unity of its people, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Sebastian Ting. Speaking at the Miri Foochow annual dinner cum installation of its main committee, youth, women and senior citizen's wings on Sunday, Ting emphasised the collective spirit and close cooperation among the state's diverse communities including the Malay, Iban, Dayak, as well as various Chinese clan groups, as the true foundation of the state's stability and progress. Talking specifically about the Foochow community's well-known 'dare to fight, dare to win' spirit, he said this had 'contributed greatly to the journey'. 'We must continue to stand shoulder to shoulder, respecting and supporting each other, so that Sarawak can remain vibrant, harmonious and full of hope,' said the Piasau assemblyman, who is also a Foochow. He further described the community's resilience and entrepreneurship as being symbolised by the 'three knives: the scissors, the kitchen knives and the barber knives' – all representing the Foochow people's determination of building a better life from humble beginning. 'This is not a legendary tale, but a true reflection of the hard work and the fighting spirit of the Foochows, which have been passed down from one generation to the next.' Also present at the event was the association's chairman Wong Chie Bin. The dinner was made extra significant when the Foochow Porridge was served as one of the dishes. Known as 'Aojiu', the sweet porridge is a unique tradition of the community, served early on the 29th day of the first lunar month. Made as ancestral offerings or as gifts to relatives and friends, this dish's main ingredients comprise glutinous rice and brown sugar, with additional items such as peanuts, red dates, water chestnuts, sesame seeds and longan.
