Hardware shop owner released on bail over upside-down Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 11 — The owner of a hardware shop on Jalan Bertam Perdana in Kepala Batas on the mainland has been released on police bail after having his statement recorded for allegedly flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down in front of his premises. Seberang Perai Utara district police chief ACP Anuar Abd Rahman said the 59-year-old man, who was arrested on Saturday night, was released yesterday after police completed recording his statement. 'In total, statements from more than 10 people have been recorded to assist in the investigation into the inverted Jalur Gemilang incident, and we have also completed the investigation papers. 'The shop owner was released on police bail at about 3 pm yesterday, and the investigation papers were sent to the Deputy Public Prosecutor's office today. We are awaiting further instructions,' he told reporters here today. Anuar said police are investigating the case under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. He gave an assurance that police would be transparent in their investigations. 'Police investigations found that the shop owner hoisted the flag upside down, while one of his workers stood beside him recording the incident. However, a video of the incident has gone viral,' he said. On claims that certain quarters intended to hold a demonstration over the matter, Anuar confirmed that police had received information about the planned protest, initially scheduled to be held in front of the premises today. 'We have advised them not to proceed with the protest to avoid any public order issues in the area, especially since police have already conducted investigations into the case,' he said. — Bernama

Drama in Butterworth as knife-wielding thief threatens baby during failed supermarket heist
BUTTERWORTH, Aug 10 — Police arrested a Vietnamese man who not only stole from a supermarket here but also attempted to take an 11-month-old baby hostage while trying to escape in an incident on Jalan Telaga Air here yesterday. Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district police chief ACP Anuar Abd Rahman said that in the incident at 12.45 pm, the supermarket supervisor saw the man trying to escape from the premises with several weighed seafood items without making payment. The supervisor, who was the complainant in the case, successfully caught the man, but the suspect managed to escape before fleeing. However, the supervisor attempted to recapture the foreigner. 'At that time, the man had pulled an 11-month-old baby boy who was with a family member, and was also holding a knife and pointing it at the public, including the baby,' he said in a statement tonight. Anuar said, however, with the help of several supermarket employees and members of the public who were there, the suspect, in his 30s, was subdued before being handed over to the police who arrived at the scene after being contacted by customers there. He said further investigations are being conducted and the case is being investigated under Sections 380, 324 and 506 of the Penal Code, namely theft in a building, causing injury and criminal intimidation. Previously, several videos went viral showing a tense situation and dramatic action when a foreign man was seen trying to escape while holding a plastic bag and a knife in an incident at a supermarket, attempting to abduct a baby boy believed to be for ransom. — Bernama

Cops probe upside down Jalur Gemilang
A screen grab of the video which features a man hoisting the Malaysian flag upside down. PETALING JAYA : Seberang Perai Utara police have launched an investigation into an incident in which a man had hoisted the Jalur Gemilang upside down. District police chief Anuar Abd Rahman said the authorities were investigating the incident for improper use of emblems and names, insulting behaviour, and improper use of network facilities. 'Police have recorded the statements of the complainant as well as the suspect involved in the incident,' he said in a statement. A video, uploaded at about 12.30pm today, shows a man hoisting the flag, while another was recording it. A report was lodged at the Kepala Batas police station. Anuar reminded the public against sensationalising the matter to avoid disrupting public order. Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the hardware shop owner involved in the gaffe said he was measuring the length of an iron pole while hanging the flag and did not notice that the flag was upside down. The owner said he rectified the mistake immediately after realising it. He apologised for the blunder and lodged a report at the Kepala Batas police station to provide an explanation. It was the sixth flag-related incident since January, and the second case of improper handling of flags this month. On Aug 1, SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson apologised for mistakenly flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down.

Alleged ‘warning note' found after Tasek Gelugor terrace house fire, cops probe loan shark link
TASEK GELUGOR, June 26 — Police are investigating a fire that destroyed three terraced houses in Taman Tasek Gelugor Utama last Tuesday, following claims that the incident was linked to loan shark activity. Seberang Perai Utara police chief ACP Anuar Abdul Rahman said a police report was lodged by one of the affected homeowners, who suspected the fire was an act of arson. 'The victim claimed the fire was deliberate and believed to be the work of loan sharks, as a warning note allegedly from a loan shark was found at one of the houses,' he said when contacted by Bernama today. He said investigations are ongoing, with police awaiting a forensic report from the Fire and Rescue Department to support further action. The fire, which broke out at around 4.50 am, damaged three homes but caused no injuries. Upon arrival, firefighters found the blaze had spread rapidly, engulfing five cars and four motorcycles. The fire was fully extinguished by 5.59 am, with monitoring completed about three hours later. The incident went viral on social media after a man, believed to be one of the victims, claimed on Facebook that traces of petrol and paint were found at two of the damaged homes, including his own. He also said a threatening note and a bottle with petrol residue were discovered at his neighbour's gate, whose house was also affected. According to the victim, the note was actually addressed to another house, not the ones that caught fire. It reportedly included the name and identity card number of the borrower, along with a threat to burn the house. The victims have called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. — Bernama
