Speaker Berri urges US to pressure Israel to implement ceasefire during meeting with ceasefire committee chiefs

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri received Major General Jasper Jeffers, head of the ceasefire monitoring committee, and resident committee chief Major General Michael Leeney at the Second Presidency headquarters in Ain al-Tineh. The meeting was also attended by U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson and Berri's media advisor Ali Hamdan. Discussions focused on the latest developments on the ground in southern Lebanon, particularly in light of Israel's continued violations of U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 and the ceasefire agreement. At the outset of the meeting, Berri denounced what he described as Israel's escalating daily attacks and violations, noting that while Lebanon has upheld its obligations, Israel has not honored the ceasefire nor withdrawn from the remaining occupied Lebanese territory. Berri stressed that Israel's ongoing aggression is undermining Lebanon's recovery, stability, reform efforts, and sovereignty. He called on the United States to exert pressure on Israel to immediately comply with the agreement and implement U.N. Resolution 1701. For his part, Major General Leeney said the committee would begin holding regular meetings to monitor the situation.

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri received at the Second Presidency headquarters in Ain El Tineh, the President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Kate Forbes, in the presence of the Deputy Regional Director of the IFRC, Christian Cortez, the Lebanese Red Cross President, Dr. Antoine Zoghbi, the Secretary General of the Lebanese Red Cross George Kettani, and the head of the Medical- Social Services Department at the Lebanese Red Cross, Amina Berri Fawaz. The delegation briefed Speaker Berri on the Federation's work programs and its efforts to support the Lebanese Red Cross, in addition to the programs and services provided during the current stage, especially during the Israeli aggression on Lebanon. Speaker Berri later met with Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Ahmed Hajjar, with whom he discussed the general situation, political and security developments, and matters related to the work of the ministry.

House Speaker Nabih Berri announced that the American told him that the Israeli enemy will withdraw from South Lebanon by February 18, but will keep occupation troops in five positions, adding that he rejected the issue categorically. Speaker Berri met with head of the Ceasefire Monitoring Committee, U.S. General Jasper Jeffers, at the Second Presidency headquarters in Ain al-Tineh in the presence of U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, Lisa Johnson. Speaker Berri told the reporters that he totally dismissed the extension of Israeli withdrawal deadline, adding that the Americans must guarantee the Zionist pull-out from Lebanon; otherwise, they would have cause a major setback fro the new Lebanese government. 'If the Israeli occupation persists in South Lebanon, days will tell. The Lebanese state is responsible for that. The Lebanese Army is assuming its responsibilities south of Litani River; however, the national dialogue will address the situation as of north of Litani River in the context of the defense strategy.' The Parliament Speaker stressed that 'Hezbollah is fully committed, but the continuation of the occupation means that the Israelis will exercise freedom of movement and aggression within Lebanese territory, and this is completely unacceptable.' The Israeli occupation forces continued on Thursday violating the ceasefire agreement in South Lebanon few days before the extended withdrawal deadline. The ceasefire took effect on November 27, 2024, ending a 66-day Zionist war on Lebanon. After the end of the 60-day withdrawal deadline, the bias US sponsor of the agreement supported the Israeli enemy to keep its occupation forces in South Lebanon till February 18, 2025.
