Argentina returns to America's visa waiver program, netizens celebrate

The second-largest country in South America has been working with the Trump administration in ways that are not only beneficial for it but also for the US. Recently, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem took to X to share how Argentina had returned to America's visa waiver program. She shared how the country now has the lowest visa overstay rate in all of Latin America, and 25% more Argentines have travelled to the United States in the first four months of 2025 as compared to 2024, marking the biggest jump in any top 20 international arrivals. Noem appreciated Argentinian President Javier Milei's leadership, adding how Argentina is becoming an even stronger friend to the United States. "That is why we are now taking steps to allow Argentina back into the Visa Waiver Program. I was pleased to sign a statement of intent alongside Minister Werthein and Minister Bullrich, which highlights our strong partnership with Argentina and our mutual desire to promote lawful travel while deterring threats." Argentina was previously a part of the program from 1996 to 2000. Though the country has been reinstated now, it could take years to meet the program's security and immigration requirements. Alberto Fohrig, director of international co-operation at Argentina's Security Ministry, said on Radio Mitre that if the country's entry in the program was successful, it would allow 1.2 million Argentines who travel to the United States each year to enter without a visa for 90 days for both tourism and business. Mexican security forces kill 12, arrest 9 in raid on alleged gang site, World News
MEXICO CITY - Mexican security forces detained nine alleged members of a criminal group and killed 12 others in an operation in a rural part of southwestern Mexico on Saturday (May 17), Mexico's Security Ministry said. In a post on social media, Security Minister Omar Harfuch confirmed three members of the Navy were injured in the Navy-led operation in Huitzontla, Michoacan. The detained individuals are linked to crimes such as homicide, extortion, and kidnapping, Harfuch said. Criminal groups in the area are tied to maritime drug trafficking and naval personnel found weapons and tactical equipment at the site, the Security Ministry said in a statement. Security forces came up against "strong aggression" which "necessitated the use of force in compliance with current regulations," the ministry said. Mexican newspapers El Universal and La Jornada reported that the group was part of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel gang, one of Mexico's two major drug cartels. Riots at demonstration against low pensions in Argentina
Demonstrators and police clashed violently in Buenos Aires on Wednesday during a protest against low pensions amid austerity measures implemented by Argentina's right-wing libertarian President Javier Milei, with at least 124 people arrested and 46 injured. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the protesters, who threw stones at the officers and set fire to a police car and rubbish bins, as reported by the newspaper La Nación. According to the paper, the police arrested at least 150 people and several people were injured in the clashes. Argentina's Security Ministry spoke of 124 arrested in a statement late on Wednesday. It also said that 26 members of the city security forces and police were injured and taken to hospital, including one person who suffered a gunshot wound and underwent surgery. The ministry also reported 20 injuries among people it characterized as protesters, including one in serious condition. Local media reported that a photographer covering the protest was in critical condition after being hit in the head by a tear gas canister. Numerous football ultras were among the demonstrators, the ministry confirmed. The so-called "Barrabravas" have a lot of influence in Argentina and have contacts in the criminal underworld. Members of various left-wing groups and trade unions also took part in the demonstration in front of the congress building, according to media reports. Argentinian trade union federation CGT condemned in a statement what it called "savage actions" by the Milei government "violently, senselessly, and illegally repressed today's demonstration in Plaza Congreso." The union accused police forces of using "brutality" to repress the demonstration, injuring people "including pensioners, protesters, media workers, and even some unsuspecting pedestrians in the area." Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof also condemned the "ferocious, illegal, and premeditated" repression of the protest. "A barrage of violence against pensioners and citizens protesting against the austerity measures," the governor said in a post on X. "What happened today is an attack on fundamental democratic rights." "While a photographer fights for his life, government spokespersons lie, justify violence, and spread hatred. This authoritarian rampage must be urgently stopped." Milei took office in December 2023, and initiated radical reforms. Thousands of civil servants were dismissed, and social programmes were massively cut. While his austerity measures significantly reduced inflation, they also stifled the economy. In this once-affluent country, now more than 50% of people live below the poverty line.
