Two arrested by WB STF for Murshidabad violence
Bhubaneswar: The West Bengal STF with the help of Odisha Police on Monday arrested two sons of Ziaul Sheikh, one of the prime suspects in the murder of a father-son duo in Murshidabad's Jafrabad during violence earlier this month from Jharsuguda district, a senior officer said. The police arrested two sons of Sheikh, identified as Bani Israel and Sefaul Haque. 'During the raid, the accused persons attempted to flee. The police team fired four rounds as warning shots in the air to deter them. However, due to the quick response of the police team, both accused were successfully nabbed,' IGP (Northern Range) Sambalpur, Himanshu Lal said. Apart from Bani Israel and Sefaul Haque, six more residents of Murshidabad were also nabbed following a series of raids on Monday. These individuals are allegedly involved in the Murshidabad violence incident, police said. They are identified as Babul Sk, Abdul Khalek, Saba Karim, Roni Sk, Manarul Sk and Azfarul Sk. All belong to Murshidabad, police said, adding that further investigation on their role in the violence is being probed. The police also recovered one country-made pistol from the possession of the accused persons, the IGP said, adding that two 7.62 mm live ammunition, four 9 mm empty cartridges have also been seized. The West Bengal Police STF was searching for the duo as part of its investigation into the murder of a father-son duo— Haragobindo Das and his son Chandan Das registered in Murshidabad district. On the requisition of the West Bengal STF, Banharpali Police, with the assistance of other officers from Jharsuguda district, conducted raids at various locations under the Bandhabahal area. Two arrested persons and six detained ones were taken to the Banharpali police station for questioning, an officer said, adding that all these people used to work as labourers in Bundubahal in the Banharpal police station area. They had gone home to Murshidabad during Eid celebrations and allegedly took part in the violence, he said, adding that they returned to Jharsuguda and were in hiding. Meanwhile, a senior police officer of West Bengal Police said, 'We have detained six persons from their hideout in Jharsuguda. They were involved in the arson and rioting cases in Jafrabad and Betbona villages in Samserganj, Jangipur and had escaped to Odisha after the incident. Their involvement, if any, in the double murder case is also being verified. They are being brought to Jangipur.' Three persons were killed, several people were injured, and scores of shops and houses were vandalised as violence rocked parts of West Bengal's Murshidabad district during protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

Two linked with father-son murder in Murshidabad arrested in Odisha
Two men accused of killing a father-son duo in Murshidabad were arrested in Odisha's Jharsuguda district on Monday (April 21, 2025) after a Special Task Force from West Bengal tracked them down across State lines. Haragobindo Das (77) and his son Chandan Das (40) were killed during protests allegedly over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Jafrabad on April 12. Their house was allegedly ransacked .during the violence. 'The West Bengal STF came to Jharsuguda district. On the requisition of the West Bengal STF, Banharpali Police, with the assistance of other officers from Jharsuguda district, conducted raids at various locations under Bandhabahal outpost,' said Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police Parmar Smit Parshottamdas. Jharsuguda SP said, 'As per the request of the West Bengal Police, the Jharsuguda team detained two individuals — Sefaul Haque and Bani Israel. During the apprehension, one pistol was found in the possession of the accused persons, and they attempted to flee from police custody.' 'The police team fired four rounds as warning shots in the air to deter them. Due to the quick response of the police team, both accused were successfully apprehended,' said Mr. Parshottamdas. Apart from Bani Israel and Sefaul Haque, six residents of Murshidabad were identified and detained by the joint team of Jharsuguda Police and West Bengal STF from the Bandhbahal area. They were allegedly involved in the Murshidabad violence. 'Since one country made pistol loaded with two 7.62 MM live ammunition were seized from Bani Israel, the two have been charged under Section 25 (1)(a)/27(1) Arms Act. We have forwarded them to court. When West Bengal police seek their remand, the court will take a call. However, six persons detained in connection with Murshidabad Waqf violence have been handed over to our West Bengal counterparts and they will take them to their State on Tuesday,' said the Jharsuguda SP. The six Murshidabad men were working in the construction sector in Odisha's Jharsuguda area. 'Last month they had gone home on the eve of Eid ul-Fitr. While they were at home, the violence took place. They had allegedly taken part in the violence. They are well conversant with geography of Jharsuguda,' he said.

Two main accused in Murshidabad violence held in Odisha's Jharsuguda; six others detained
JHARSUGUDA: Two prime suspects in the murder of a father-son duo during protests over the Waqf Amendment Act in West Bengal's Murshidabad were arrested on Monday by a joint team of West Bengal STF and Jharsuguda Police within the Bandhabahal Outpost limits. The two siblings were identified as Bani Israel and Sefaul Haque, both residents of Sulitala village in Murshidabad. They were prime suspects in the murder of Chandan Das (40) and his father Haragobinda Das (72). The father-son duo was allegedly hacked to death on April 13 during violent protests against the new Waqf Act in West Bengal's Murshidabad district. The murders had triggered widespread tension in the region. A case was registered at Samserganj PS in West Bengal in this regard. IG, Northern Range, Himansu Lal told TNIE that following a request from the West Bengal STF, Banharpali Police conducted raids at multiple locations early in the morning. The operation that began around 5 am led to the arrest of the siblings. During arrest, Bani Israel was found in possession of a country-made pistol loaded with two rounds of 7.62 mm live ammunition. As both accused attempted to flee, the police team fired four warning shots in the air to prevent their escape. Four empty 9 mm cartridges were recovered from the scene, and a case was registered under relevant sections of the BNS and Arms Act. Jharsuguda SP, Smit P Parmar said, six other individuals from Murshidabad, suspected to be involved in the larger violence incident, were also detained during the raids. "The detainees have been identified as Babul Sk, Abdul Khalek, Saba Karim, Roni Sk, Manarul Sk, and Azfarul Sk, all residents of various localities under Samserganj PS in West Bengal. They were taken into custody for further questioning and verification," he added. Earlier on April 14, two other accused in the double murder -- Kalu Madab and Dildar Madab -- had been arrested from different hideouts in Murshidabad and Birbhum districts. The police are probing the broader conspiracy behind the violence and presence of multiple individuals from Murshidabad in Jharsuguda. Officials confirmed that coordination between states and swift intelligence sharing played a crucial role in tracking the accused beyond state borders. The raids were carried out under the supervision of Inspector of Banharpali police station Ranjit Naik and SI Sarat Chandra Dwibedy of Bandhabahal police station. Notably, three persons were killed, several people were injured, and scores of shops and houses were vandalised as violence rocked parts of Murshidabad district during protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

Two arrested in Odisha over murder of Murshidabad father-son during Waqf violence
Police in Odisha's Jharsuguda district Monday arrested two people allegedly involved in the killing of the father-son duo in neighbouring West Bengal's Murshidabad district during the violence over the Waqf law. The two arrested persons are Bani Israel and Sefaul Haque, residents of Sulitala village under Samserganj police station area of Murshidabad district. On April 11, Hargobindo Das (72) and Chandan Das (40), were allegedly hacked to death in Samserganj block of Murshidabad district. Northern Range IG Himansu Lal told The Indian Express that the Banharpali Police, on the requisition of the West Bengal Special Task Force, conducted raids at multiple locations under Bandhabahal outpost. Six other Murshidabad residents allegedly involved in the violence were also picked up in these raids. 'The Jharsuguda police nabbed the two accused, Sefaul and Bani. During the operation, one pistol was found in the possession of the accused persons and they attempted to flee. The police team then fired four warning shots in the air to deter them,' said Lal. Along with the country-made pistol, police seized two 7.62 mm rounds and four empty 9 mm cartridge cases. The six other persons nabbed by police, and expected to be arrested soon, are: Abul Sheikh (24), Abdul Khalek (24), Saba Karim (25), Roni Sheikh (23), Manarul Sheikh (54) and Farul Sheikh (21).
