Two men accused of killing a father-son duo in Murshidabad were arrested in Odisha's Jharsuguda district on Monday (April 21, 2025) after a Special Task Force from West Bengal tracked them down across State lines.
Haragobindo Das (77) and his son Chandan Das (40) were killed during protests allegedly over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Jafrabad on April 12. Their house was allegedly ransacked .during the violence.
'The West Bengal STF came to Jharsuguda district. On the requisition of the West Bengal STF, Banharpali Police, with the assistance of other officers from Jharsuguda district, conducted raids at various locations under Bandhabahal outpost,' said Jharsuguda Superintendent of Police Parmar Smit Parshottamdas.
Jharsuguda SP said, 'As per the request of the West Bengal Police, the Jharsuguda team detained two individuals — Sefaul Haque and Bani Israel. During the apprehension, one pistol was found in the possession of the accused persons, and they attempted to flee from police custody.'
'The police team fired four rounds as warning shots in the air to deter them. Due to the quick response of the police team, both accused were successfully apprehended,' said Mr. Parshottamdas.
Apart from Bani Israel and Sefaul Haque, six residents of Murshidabad were identified and detained by the joint team of Jharsuguda Police and West Bengal STF from the Bandhbahal area. They were allegedly involved in the Murshidabad violence.
'Since one country made pistol loaded with two 7.62 MM live ammunition were seized from Bani Israel, the two have been charged under Section 25 (1)(a)/27(1) Arms Act. We have forwarded them to court. When West Bengal police seek their remand, the court will take a call. However, six persons detained in connection with Murshidabad Waqf violence have been handed over to our West Bengal counterparts and they will take them to their State on Tuesday,' said the Jharsuguda SP.
The six Murshidabad men were working in the construction sector in Odisha's Jharsuguda area. 'Last month they had gone home on the eve of Eid ul-Fitr. ‘Popularity No Shield From Law': Allahabad HC Refuses To Quash Case Against Elvish Yadav
Last Updated: Elvish Yadav had sought to quash criminal proceedings against him in a case involving the use of snakes during a music video shoot, and alleged drug and wildlife offences. The Allahabad High Court has dismissed a petition by social media influencer Elvish Yadav seeking to quash criminal proceedings against him in a high-profile case involving the use of snakes during a music video shoot, and alleged drug and wildlife offences. Yadav had moved the court under Section 528 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), challenging the charge-sheet filed on April 5, 2024, the subsequent summoning order dated April 8, 2024, and the entire criminal proceedings in Case Crime No. 461 of 2023. The case, which began with an FIR registered at Sector-49 Police Station in Noida, accuses Yadav and others of violating provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, IPC, and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Yadav's counsel, senior advocate Naveen Sinha, argued that the FIR itself was flawed, having been lodged by an Animal Welfare Officer — a person not authorized under Section 55 of the Wildlife Protection Act to initiate prosecution. He also alleged that the proceedings were motivated by media sensationalism stemming from the applicant's celebrity status, and that the snakes featured in the controversial video were non-poisonous pets used during the shoot without any harm caused. Further, it was contended that there was no substantive evidence linking Yadav to any offence under the NDPS Act or the Indian Penal Code, and that sections 27 and 27A of the NDPS Act were hastily invoked by police in a bid to sensationalise the arrest. However, the Additional Advocate General for the State and counsel for the complainant argued that a detailed investigation had been carried out, and a prima facie case had emerged against Yadav warranting a trial. They emphasised that the points raised by the applicant are matters of defense and ought to be considered during trial rather than at the pre-trial stage. After hearing all parties, the bench of Justice Saurabh Srivastava observed that the trial court had rightly taken cognizance after the investigating officer filed a charge-sheet based on new evidence that went beyond the original FIR. The judge remarked that 'popularity or position of the accused cannot be basis of extension of protection" and reiterated that every individual stands equal before the law. 'The popularity or position of the accused cannot be basis of extension of protection and as per law of this land each and every person irrespective of his popularity or personality are equal in the eye of law," court observed. Holding that the issues raised by Yadav's counsel could be appropriately examined during the course of trial, the high court dismissed the application stating that it lacked merit. ‘Inhumane' Cuttack municipal body forces workers to clean drain without safety gear
CUTTACK: The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has continued engaging sanitary workers in manual scavenging of drains without providing them any protective gear, in blatant violation of the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act-2013. One such incident came to light on Thursday when a man, holding a motor tube, was seen swimming bare body in the main storm water channel (MSWC-I) stretching from Matru Bhawan to Nuabazar, cleaning the weeds with the help of a bamboo stick. Not only that, some minor boys were also allegedly engaged at the site to remove the weeds from the banks of the drain in violation of the Child Labour(Prohibition and Regulation) Act. 'Venturing into drains bare body for manual cleaning work is not just risky but also life-threatening as the channels contain dirty, polluted water. They are laden with sharp items like broken glasses, metals and spikes besides poisonous snakes in the waterbodies. Also, there was no one present at the spot to supervise the work,' alleged city-based activist Jitendra Kumar Sahoo. Even though manual scavenging has already claimed many lives in the past, the civic body has seemingly not yet learnt its lesson and openly violating the law. In April 15, 2021, two workers had died of asphyxiation and another had become critical while cleaning a sewerage system of 15-ft depth at CDA-sector-10.

Man shot dead outside Amravati mall in Haryana's Panchkula, hunt on for two accused
A man in his twenties was shot dead and his cousin seriously injured when two assailants opened fire at them outside a mall in Amravati Enclave in Haryana's Panchkula district at 10.45pm on Thursday, police said on Friday. The deceased was identified as Sonu Nolta, a resident of Nolta village near Pinjore town, while his cousin, Nitin Panwar, alias Prince, 20, was rushed to Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, with a bullet wound to his thigh. Soon after the incident that triggered panic in the residential area along the national highway to Shimla, a video surfaced online in which the two accused are seen claiming responsibility, stating they had orchestrated the attack due to personal rivalry and on the directions of Anmol Bishnoi, the brother of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. In his statement to the police, Nitin, who is a diploma student at Government Polytechnic and a resident of Mallah village, Panchkula, said he had accompanied Sonu and his friend, Jaspreet Kaur, to a movie at the mall on Thursday night. 'Three of us went to the mall in Sonu's Mahindra Scorpio (HP 15D 1726) from Tipra in Kalka. After the film, Jaspreet's friends Neha and Priya joined us. The three of them were crossing the road from the mall, while Sonu and I waited in the SUV on the roadside when the two armed men, Piyush Piplani of Pinjore and Ankush from Chawla Colony, Pinjore, emerged from another car parked nearby, each brandishing a pistol,' he told the police. The duo walked up to the driver's window and opened fire at Sonu, who slumped into the seat with multiple bullet injuries, while Panwar sustained a gunshot wound to his left thigh. The attackers fled in their vehicle, which already had other men inside, possibly armed accomplices. Nitin managed to call his maternal uncle from his phone to report the attack. Haryana Police reached the scene after receiving the alert. However, by then, both the victims had been rushed to the Civil Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula. Doctors declared Sonu brought dead, while Nitin was given first aid and referred to PGIMER, Chandigarh. Sub-inspector Rajbir Singh from PGI police post recorded Nitin's statement at 3.40am on Friday. Nitin confirmed he knew both the accused, Piyush and Ankush, personally and demanded strict action against them and their accomplices. Based on his statement, a case was registered under Sections 103(1), 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 25, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act at Pinjore police station. The police are now on the lookout for Piyush, Ankush and their unidentified accomplices.
