A new Alex Seidel and a new Mercantile
Alex Seidel is back in the kitchen. And the James Beard Award-winning chef says he is having fun again. Why it matters: How he whittled down his Denver restaurant empire to focus on what he loves is a study in how the city's food scene grew fast, slid backward and left top chefs like Seidel imagining a new future. State of play: Seidel, 52, closed his farm in Larkspur in 2021 — the first step on what he called "a personal journey" back to his roots, he told BusinessDen in a recent interview. Last August, he sold his majority stake in Mercantile — where won his 2018 Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest — to Sage Hospitality. And he closed his Denver landmark restaurant, Fruition, in January. What he's saying: "I wasn't having fun worrying about what new legislation was going to come out. I don't have fun going to the mayor's office and talking about business," he told BusinessDen. "I like to be in my restaurant working with my people and creating things. … And I got so far away from that." The latest: Mercantile — where Seidel still owns a 35% stake — reopened after a six-week closure and $500,000 renovation to its Union Station space. It now features a spacious bar and cafe as well as a private dining room. The menu has evolved from its market concept and will change seasonally. Lunch is expanded to include counter service and a $35, two-course meal. The big picture: Seidel is not the only prominent name to shed pieces of his restaurant portfolio post-pandemic. The closure of Fruition, his first restaurant, was not solely driven by economics, he says, and his other properties — three Chook Chicken locations and Fudmill, a Denver bakery — are doing well.

Quilting group to hold exhibit in Altoona, highlight women quilters
ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) — A group of quilters will be showcasing their creations in Altoona this weekend for National Quilting Day. The Chimney Rocks Quilt Guild will be presenting an exhibition of handcrafted quilts at the ArtsAltoona Performance Center along 6th Avenue on Saturday, March 15. The event will include a special exhibit highlighting women quilters for Women's History Month. The exhibition is free to attend starting at 10 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m. Older Pennsylvanians encouraged to submit artwork for showcase Helen Seidel, the President of the Chimney Rocks Quilt Guild, said this is the first big event the group will hold since being established last June. She hopes the exhibit will help attract new members to the guild. 'I want to share our love of quilting with the community,' Seidel said. 'We will have a display of quilts, a quilt raffle, and some hands-on demos. Also, will have information about Quilts of Valor, a national organization that encourages the recognition of our veterans for their service by presenting them with a quilt made by our group.' Seidel added the group has given over 200 guilts to area veterans. More information about upcoming events can be found on the ArtsAltoona website. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Columnist Jeff Seidel, Free Press Sports section win national awards
The Free Press Sports department won four honors in the largest competition category of the Associated Press Sports Editors awards, the organization announced last week. This year's competition acknowledged work published in 2024. The Free Press' awards include: ∎ Jeff Seidel was named one of the top 10 columnists in the country with his entry, which included stories on philanthropy by the Detroit Lions players, a life-saving Lions fan and a Michigan Tech basketball victory that went viral. ∎ Seidel won Top 10 in the Long Features category for his profile of ailing Tigers legend Chet Lemon. SHAWN WINDSOR: Detroit fan extraordinaire Andy Isaac leaves amazing legacy — and great Chicago Bears diss ∎ Photographer Junfu Han's photo of San Francisco wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk making a game-changing catch after the ball bounced off Lions cornerback Kindle Vildor's facemask in last year's NFC championship game was named as one of the top 10 action photos. The award is Han's second from APSE, with his previous coming in 2021. ∎ And the Free Press' daily and Sunday sports print section was honored as one of the Top 10 among the country's biggest news organizations. Among the entry was the coverage of Michigan's national title football game, the Lions in the NFC Championship game and the weekly Lions Blitz section. It's the first column award for the Free Press since 2020, when Mitch Albom won for the second consecutive year. Seidel had never before won an APSE column honor, but had won awards for feature writing five of the past eight years. The Free Press print section had not won a Top 10 award since 2018, though it was honored as one of the top 10 Special Sections in 2022 for its Miguel Cabrera commemorative section. The contest annually recognizes the best in sports sections, sports writing and sports reporting. The organization includes representatives from most daily newspapers and major sports websites in North America. Bill Bradley is sports editor at the Free Press. This exoplanet has weather never before seen in the universe
Scientists say they are rethinking how the weather works after creating a 3D map of an exoplanet 900 light-years away and discovering a world with jet streams fueling wild storms. WASP-121b, nicknamed Tylos, is a gas giant with a few things in common with Jupiter, but there are more differences than similarities between these two worlds. Researchers used all four telescopes at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile to study the climate and weather patterns on Tylos. According to the ESO, this is the first study in such detail of a world outside our solar system. "This planet's atmosphere behaves in ways that challenge our understanding of how weather works – not just on Earth, but on all planets. It feels like something out of science fiction," ESO researcher Julia Victoria Seidel said. Astronomers Discover Largest Superstructure In Cosmos Tylos rotates counterclockwise so that one side always faces its system's star. This causes one side of the planet to be scorching hot and always daytime. The opposite side is cool and always night. Because of its closeness to the star, a year on Tylos only lasts about 30 hours. Using the ESO's ESPRESSO instrument to combine the light of the four large telescope units into a single signal, the science team was able to detect signatures of multiple chemicals making up layers in Tylos' atmosphere. The team found that the atmosphere on Tylos has layers, each with a unique chemical makeup, including iron, sodium and hydrogen. The graphic below shows the layers: the deepest layer of the atmosphere contains iron, followed by a fast jet stream of sodium moving faster than the planet's rotation, which accelerates as it moves from the hot to the cool side. Lastly, the upper layer of the atmosphere contains hydrogen blasting out from the planet and overlapping with the sodium jet beneath. "What we found was surprising: a jet stream rotates material around the planet's equator, while a separate flow at lower levels of the atmosphere moves gas from the hot side to the cooler side. This kind of climate has never been seen before on any planet," Seidel said. How To Watch Fox Weather These observations showed jet streams spanning half the planet, churning storms high in the sky as they scream across the hot side of the planet. These storms would rival Jupiter's Great Red Spot, the largest storm in our solar system. "Even the strongest hurricanes in the solar system seem calm in comparison," Seidel said. Astronomers will soon be able to study weather on smaller Earth-sized worlds with ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), currently under construction in Chile's Atacama article source: This exoplanet has weather never before seen in the universe
