Fadhlina assures boarding schools remain safe amid bullying concerns

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has assured parents that all fully residential schools in Malaysia remain safe. She emphasised the Ministry of Education's commitment to strengthening safety measures for a secure learning environment. 'I want to assure parents that these schools remain safe and we are continuously strengthening safety measures and making improvements in all aspects,' she said. Fadhlina addressed concerns following Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's claim that Sabah parents hesitate to enrol children due to bullying. She spoke after handing mock cheques to 12 schools for autistic children at Sekolah Sinar Harapan. Fadhlina noted that 72 fully residential schools nationwide remain popular among parents. She stressed that addressing bullying requires collective effort, not just the ministry's responsibility. 'At the ministry level, we have taken various measures to tackle bullying, including strengthening school SOPs and ensuring teacher presence during school hours,' she added. Firm action, including suspension, will be taken against students guilty of bullying. Offenders will undergo the 'Bangkit Bermaruah' intervention programme, a community service initiative under district education offices. The ministry is also enhancing school counsellors' roles through training to identify at-risk students early. This approach aims for more comprehensive bullying prevention and early intervention. - Bernama

MoE back's PM's order to incorporate schools in new housing development plans

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Education Ministry has expressed strong support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement that all Madani housing projects should incorporate essential public amenities, including schools. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said this was one of the things that they had been advocating for to address the issue of overcrowding. "When there are housing plans, there must also be school planning. We know that without proper school planning, we will face several issues, especially congestion, overcrowding, and finding places for children in schools. "So, this planning is in line with what the ministry has planned. "We fully support this initiative as it addresses a critical issue that we have been advocating for," she told reporters when asked for comments on the matter. Yesterday, Anwar had ordered developers and city officials to defer Madani housing projects that did not include essential public amenities until those requirements were fulfilled. He said such projects must include schools, clinics and green spaces to ensure they are liveable for residents. Fadhlina was met after handling mock cheques to 12 special needs schools in the country at Sekolah Sinar Harapan here this afternoon. Anwar, when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in Parliament last week, had touched on expanding special education facilities and capacity for vulnerable groups nationwide. In her speech earlier, Fadhlina said her ministry would be conducting engagement session ahead of the 2026 Budget, with special focus on special needs students. "As such, we urge the relevant stakeholders to provide us with the necessary suggestions to strengthen this efforts. "This is to ensure our special needs children have equal opportunity and skills," she added.

Boarding schools still safe, Fadhlina assures parents

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has given assurance that all fully residential schools across the country are safe. She noted that the Education Ministry continually enhances safety measures and remains committed to ensuring a secure and conducive educational ecosystem that positively impacts student development. "I want to assure parents that these schools remain safe and we are continuously strengthening safety measures and making improvements in all aspects. "So, don't worry as we are constantly improving measures to strengthen the ecosystem of our residential schools further,' she told reporters after the handover ceremony of mock cheques to 12 schools for autistic children at Sekolah Sinar Harapan here on Thursday (Aug 7). Fadhlina was responding to the statement made by Kinabatangan MP Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin during a Dewan Rakyat sitting on Tuesday, in which he claimed that parents in Sabah are reluctant to send their children to boarding schools due to bullying. Fadhlina said the 72 fully residential schools nationwide remain a top choice for parents, stressing that tackling bullying requires collective effort, not the responsibility of one party alone. "At the ministry level, we have taken various measures to tackle bullying, including strengthening school SOPs and ensuring teacher presence during school hours to enhance monitoring," she said. Fadhlina added that Education Ministry will take firm action against students guilty of bullying, including suspension, during which they will undergo an intervention programme, "Bangkit Bermaruah", a community service initiative under district education offices. She also said that the ministry is reinforcing the role of school counsellors through training and exposure to help identify warning signs or students at risk of committing disciplinary offences, enabling early intervention and a more comprehensive approach to tackle bullying. - Bernama
