Anwar calls on MPs to uphold civil debate in parliament, avoid insults and profanity

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to foster a culture of respectful and civilised debate in the Dewan Rakyat, free from insults and profanity. Expressing his admiration for the participants of the 2025 Prime Minister's Cup Debate Finals on Saturday (July 26), Anwar commended their eloquence, confidence, thoughtful use of facts, and measured arguments - parliamentarians should emulate these qualities, he said. "I am very proud of the quality of the debate, and I couldn't help but wonder - why shouldn't Members of Parliament learn from this? If we wish to debate, we must first master knowledge, analyse it, process it, and present it effectively. "These young participants demonstrated an impressive standard of debate, and I salute them. Debate is not merely about speaking well; it is about the ability to understand, analyse, and articulate ideas clearly. That is precisely what I believe our Members of Parliament should learn to emulate," he said. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, also praised the current generation of students for their strong command of the Malay language and their ability to engage in discussions with depth, knowledge, and understanding. The Prime Minister said that values such as manners and ethics must be integral to the national education system, as the vision of building a Madani Malaysia cannot rely solely on technological advancements like artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation, and emerging technologies. "When we talk about a Madani nation, it must be founded on values and ethics, as articulated by Sheikh Taha Jabir Al-Alwani in his work Adab al-Ikhtilaf," he said. Acknowledging the complexity of today's challenges and the need for future generations to master new knowledge, Anwar stressed that such advancement must be grounded in tradition, human values, and ethical principles. "We train our children not only to master new knowledge but also to uphold the values of faith, ethics and local culture. Without this balance, we risk merely replicating the model of Western countries," he said. Meanwhile, the 50th edition of the debate saw Sekolah Menengah Agama Persekutuan Kajang crowned champion in the Malay language category, while Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah emerged victorious in the English category. – Bernama

PM Anwar urges MPs to adopt civil debate, avoid insults in Parliament

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Members of Parliament to maintain a culture of civil and respectful debate in the Dewan Rakyat, steering clear of insults and profanity. Speaking at the 2025 Prime Minister's Cup Debate Finals, he highlighted the need for constructive discourse in legislative discussions. Anwar expressed admiration for the young debaters, applauding their confidence, factual accuracy, and well-structured arguments. He suggested that MPs could learn from their disciplined approach to debate. 'I am very proud of the quality of the debate, and I couldn't help but wonder - why shouldn't Members of Parliament learn from this? If we wish to debate, we must first master knowledge, analyse it, process it, and present it effectively,' he said. The Prime Minister also commended the students for their proficiency in Malay and their ability to engage in insightful discussions. He emphasised that debate should focus on clarity and analysis rather than mere rhetoric. The Prime Minister said that values such as manners and ethics must be integral to the national education system, as the vision of building a MADANI Malaysia cannot rely solely on technological advancements like artificial intelligence (AI), digitalisation, and emerging technologies. 'When we talk about a MADANI nation, it must be founded on values and ethics, as articulated by Sheikh Taha Jabir Al-Alwani in his work Adab al-Ikhtilaf,' he said. Acknowledging the complexity of today's challenges and the need for future generations to master new knowledge, Anwar stressed that such advancement must be grounded in tradition, human values, and ethical principles. Without this balance, we risk merely replicating the model of Western countries,' he said. SPM 2024: Education Ministry to review each subject in detail, identify gaps

PUTRAJAYA, April 24 — The Ministry of Education (MoE) will conduct a detailed review of the performance of each subject in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination to identify areas for improvement and strengthen the national education system, said its secretary-general, Datuk Aminuddin Hassim. He said that although the 2024 SPM results showed an encouraging improvement, the ministry remains committed to ongoing enhancements. 'We will examine the quality of each subject during the post-mortem process and look to improve those subjects with slight weaknesses, in addition to focusing on how we can assist candidates sitting for the SPM this year,' he told reporters after observing the announcement of the 2024 SPM results at Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah (SAS) here today. Aminuddin added that the MoE would also seek feedback to enhance the examination ecosystem, including counselling support to help students make informed decisions regarding their career paths. 'We will try to get some feedback, such as when would be the appropriate time to announce the results online, and we will also consider how best to support parents in making decisions upon receiving their children's SPM results. '(Namely) How they can obtain counselling services to assist their children in making decisions regarding further studies or career choices,' he said. He noted that this year's SPM results also provided the ministry with an opportunity to re-evaluate educational approaches in support of the country's development policies across various sectors. 'For example, should we place greater emphasis on Stem? Should we also give more focus to the arts stream? These are matters we need to consider moving forward to prepare our younger generation as they enter the workforce,' he added. Earlier, Aminuddin attended the announcement ceremony for 172 students of Sekolah Sultan Alam Shah who sat for the 2024 SPM. The prestigious school once again recorded excellent results, with all candidates qualifying for certificates and more than 45 per cent obtaining outstanding grades (A+, A, A-) in all subjects taken. Also present was the Putrajaya Education Department Director, Ezaiddin Hussain. — Bernama
