Farmer attempts to end life on SP's office premises in Dharmapuri
A 52-year-old farmer attempted to end his life inside the compound of Superintendent of Police's office in Dharmapuri, during the grievances redress day meeting on Wednesday. The attempt was made by Jayaraman of Rajathoppu village in Nallampalli, over his land deed that was pledged by his brother for loan. Jayaraman had handed over his land documents to his younger brother Selvaraj for a loan of ₹10 lakh. Selvaraj had pledged the document, and gave ₹3 lakh to Jayaraman and kept ₹7 lakh to himself. Further, he was delaying to retrieve the document despite Jayaraman's pleas. Jayaraman had approached Adhiyamankottai police seeking their help to retrieve the documents from Selvaraj. S.S. Maheshwaran, Superintendent of Police, Dharmapuri, told The Hindu Selvaraj had approached Adhiyamankottai police asking for his land documents to be retrieved. Police summoned Jayaraman's brother Selvaraj, who was then given time to return the two land documents. The first document was returned on May 2, 2025, while the second document was to be returned by Selvaraj on June 3, 2025. 'His own brother had pledged the document and was clearly unable to retrieve it. Yesterday was the second date given by the police. Today, he came to the office to petition us. The petition was handed over to us, and then he attempted to end his life.' Asked, why did the police not register an FIR on the complaint, said, 'it would be a civil suit in which police have no say. If we had filed an FIR, then Jayaraman would not have got his document. He only wanted the document to be returned and did not want any case to be filed against his brother. That was why a CSR was registered.' Jayaraman was admitted to Dharmapuri government medical college hospital with 60% burns. 'JM has taken his statement, and if the statement specifies Selvaraj as the reason for the abetment to suicide attempt, then we will file a criminal case,' Mr. Maheshwaran said. Mr. Maheshwaran also added that legal processes were time consuming and the public should be patient without giving way to emotions. (Assistance for overcoming suicidal thoughts is available on the State's health helpline 104, Tele-MANAS 14416. and Sneha's suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.)

Rain damage assessment under way in Coimbatore district
COIMBATORE: An assessment of the damage caused by the recent heavy spells is under way in Coimbatore district. An official in the district disaster management authority said revenue, horticulture and agriculture departments were assessing damage to huts, properties and crops caused by continuous rain over the past four days. 'Hut damages were reported from Vellalapalayam, Periyanegamam, N Chandrapuram, Unjavelampatti, and Thalakarai areas in Pollachi block. In Kinathukadavu block, huts were damaged in Kappalankarai and Kakkadavu villages on Tuesday,' the official said. Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds destroyed more than 15,000 banana plants in Theethipalayam, Kuppanur and surrounding areas in the district. The Thondamuthur region experienced intense rainfall on Tuesday, while Valparai hills received widespread rain that caused damage to roads, electric poles and trees. Periyasamy, a farmer in Theethipalayam, said as the banana plants were at the harvesting stage, farmers suffered significant losses. 'Horticulture and revenue departments and district administration should conduct a field survey and ensure appropriate compensation from the disaster response fund for the affected farmers,' he said. "Horticulture department officials say the existing govt order provides only Rs17,500 per hectare as compensation from the disaster response fund, which amounts to about Rs 6 per banana plant," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bolsas nos olhos? Currently, the market value of a banana plant is between Rs 750 and Rs 800. After a year of investment, receiving only Rs 6 per plant is unacceptable. The district administration should recommend changes to the govt order to ensure adequate compensation for banana crops, considering the scale of farmers' losses,' Periyasamy said. Selvaraj, a farmer in Kuppanur, urged the authorities to conduct a field assessment at the earliest to provide timely and adequate relief. He urged them to educate farmers on measures to protect banana plants from wind damage.

Residents lament delay in identifying land to set up EV charging stations
: Residents have raised complaints about the delay in identifying government land for setting up electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the city. Anna Nagar resident T. Selvaraj said they had met Chennai Corporation councillors and urged them to facilitate the identification of lands. 'Those in possession of electric vehicles are facing numerous problems because of the inadequate number of charging stations set up by private companies in the city. We have to drive long distances to get the vehicle charged. We will save time if the GCC sets up the facilities in each neighbourhood of every ward in all 15 zones,' he said, adding that they had asked the councillors to resolve the problem. Federation of North Chennai Residents' Welfare Association president T.K. Shanmugam said EV charging stations had not been set up by private agencies in north Chennai. 'My electric vehicle slows down after a few kilometres. But there are no charging stations in our area. We have to cover long distances to access the facility in areas such as Madhavaram and Tondiarpet. Daily wage labourers save money by opting for electric vehicles. If the GCC sets up EV charging stations, poor residents of north Chennai will benefit from them,' he said. GCC councillor T.V. Shemmozhi said he held a meeting with GCC officials on Saturday in the presence of the MLA to discuss the installation of EV charging stations in Chennai Corporation parks. 'The officials have agreed to set up the facilities in parks such as Park,' he said. 'Residents want the charging stations to start functioning without any delay. When the private sector fails, they turn to the elected representatives to fulfill their needs,' he added. In the past few months, the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) has been holding talks with agencies such as the GCC to set up EV charging stations in parks, parking lots, and playgrounds. However, officials have also pointed to the lack of income of fuel pump operators who have set up the stations in some areas of the city. TNGECL Managing Director Aneesh Sekhar said government lands at 15 locations have been identified in the city to set up the facility under the Public-Private Partnership model. 'Work on this revenue sharing model for charge point operators on government land is in the advanced stages. We have done the feasibility study. The final approval is yet to come. This is a quick win to set the ball rolling. We have also written to all local bodies and land-owning agencies to identify land for the operators. We have a long way to go,' he said.

Cancel false SC/ST charges against activist, public petition Collector
Activists and public demanding to revoke case filed against K. Selvaraj, an environmental activist based in Melur, under Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, submitted a petition with the District Collector M.S. Sangeetha here on Monday. Gnanasekaran of Vadipatti, one of the petitioners, condemning the act of police, charged that it was an act of vengeance to silence Mr. Selvarajan who had been vocal against several issues like Tungsten mining project and had also been one of the reasons for shutting down several illegal quarries in the district. 'As he regularly voices out against such environmental exploitations and stage protests, and movements against projects affecting people and environment, the police had been targeting him for several years through various ways,' he added. While their previous attempts to silence him through other charges had failed, this time, they used a false complaint from a SC youth, and had framed him under the SC/ST (POA) Act, 1989, which was non-bailable, Mr. Gnanasekaran noted. 'Mr. Selvaraj has been fighting against an individual who had encroached on government land and was enjoying the property was constantly opposing him,' he added. Using the chance, the police, by claiming false charges that Mr. Selvaraj had attacked the encroacher, attempted to injure him and uttered abusive words against the person, had booked him under SC/ST Act, he noted. People who knew him and had worked along with him for several years knew these charges were false and he was not such a person to have casteist view towards fellow human beings even if they were against him, he observed. 'This case against him is just another attempt to stop him from dissenting against the State and for various people-affecting projects,' he said. Senior officials should immediately act to revoke the false charges framed against Mr. Selvaraj, the petitioners demanded.
