Power fault on Sengkang-Punggol LRT line: Service being restored, says SBS Transit, Singapore News

Services on the Sengkang-Punggol LRT (SPLRT) are being restored, said SBS Transit. This comes after train service on the SPLRT was disrupted earlier this morning (Aug 15) due to a power fault. In an update just after 12pm, SBS Transit said that services are progressively available on the Sengkang LRT since 11.05am, and on the Punggol LRT since 11.20am amid ongoing recovery works. SBS Transit had earlier posted on Facebook just before 9am that free regular bus services are available at designated bus stops near affected stations and Sengkang bus interchange. It added then that free bridging bus services are also available. Over at Punggol MRT station this morning, AsiaOne observed station managers on the ground guiding commuters to the bridging buses at the bus interchange nearby. They would escort commuters to temporary queues for buses headed to destinations along the LRT line's east and west loops, with many commuters expressing gratitude for their guidance. Commuters unhappy over breakdown However, some commuters were not pleased by the breakdown, with one commuter sharing his dissatisfaction with AsiaOne. Student Qiang Kai said he uses the LRT regularly to travel to school and home. He told AsiaOne that he was on his way back to his home near Samudera LRT station. "Normally the LRT will take nine mins, but the bus might take much longer," the 16-year-old said. He also felt let down by the disruption, stating: "[This is] not very reliable, I thought maybe once I can deal with it, but twice in three days is very annoying." Adeline, a commuter on her way to Coral Edge LRT station, shared that she wasn't too bothered by the breakdowns. "I don't really travel here often and there's a bridging bus so it's fine," the 33-year-old said. "It's a minor inconvenience, I'm a little bit late to an appointment but that's fine." Izzad, a 30-year-old teacher, expressed concern over the breakdown. "People at this hour need to go for their work and such and this delays their timings and might affect their work and life," he commented. "It is inconvenient, because whether you live nearby or far away... [you are] going to be delayed." The Friday morning disruption comes three days after a power switchboard failed and caused a major disruption affecting 11 MRT stations on the Northeast Line and the entire SPLRT. NEL, SPLRT disruption: Electricity surge shut down backup power switchboard, says LTA

SINGAPORE - Early investigations into the disruption on the North East MRT Line (NEL) and the Sengkang-Punggol LRT (SPLRT) system on Aug 12 have shed more light on the cause of the breakdown and why it took hours for operator SBS Transit to restore service on the affected lines. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a Facebook post on Aug 13 that a surge in electricity had damaged one of two switchboards at a substation in the NEL depot in Sengkang, which fed power to the affected rail systems. At the same time, the electrical surge also triggered a safety feature meant to protect the second switchboard from damage, causing it to shut down as well, LTA noted. A switchboard distributes power from electrical sources to several smaller circuits. The authority said the two switchboards would normally have acted as backups for each other, so power can continue to be supplied even if one were to go down. But on Aug 12, the power supply from Sengkang Depot was completely cut off as a result of both switchboards tripping, and SBS Transit had to manually connect the second working switchboard to a backup power source in Dhoby Ghaut, in order to restore train services progressively. While LTA continues to probe the incident, which is the second lengthy service disruption to hit Singapore's rail network in two weeks, the authority and SBS Transit are also reviewing how to make the power systems more resilient, it said. Several NEL stations were also plunged into darkness, as free bridging bus services were activated. The disruption on the NEL lasted about three hours, from just after 11am to 2.10pm, when train service was fully restored. The SPLRT was worse-hit, with train service resuming fully 10 hours later at about 9.20pm. SBS Transit's group chief executive Jeffrey Sim earlier said the failure of a power switchboard at the Sengkang Depot's substation had caused an unintended discharge of electricity in a device used to regulate power supply. This resulted in the power trip that crippled the NEL and SPLRT. This device, called a voltage transformer, converts a high voltage to a lower, safer level. Mr Sim said the faulty voltage transformer could not be repaired immediately after the power trip, which is why SBS Transit decided to draw power from its other substation at Dhoby Ghaut. LTA said on Aug 13 that LTA and SBS Transit engineers later worked through the night to restore power supply to the NEL depot substation and ensure safety of the system. In addition, about 350 staff from LTA and SBS Transit, on top of regular station staff, were deployed to the affected stations to guide commuters during the breakdown.

LTA, SBS Transit probing Aug 12 train disruption, reviewing ways to up power system's resilience

SINGAPORE – Investigations into the disruption to train services on the North East MRT Line and the Sengkang-Punggol LRT (SPLRT) system are underway, along with a review on how to make its power systems more resilient. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said in a Facebook post on Aug 13 that, along with operator SBS Transit, it is investigating the cause behind the disruption on Aug 12 , which lasted three hours on the North East Line (NEL). The LRT system was also disrupted for about 10 hours the same day . This outage was caused by a failure of the power switchboard at the NEL depot's substation, according to preliminary investigations. LTA and SBS Transit engineers worked throughout the night to restore power to that substation and to ensure its safety, the authority said. Slightly after 11am on Aug 12, train service s along an 11-station stretch – between Farrer Park and Punggol Coast – on the (NEL) and the entire SPLRT were crippled by a power fault. Train services along the NEL were progressively restarted at affected stations before fully resuming across all stations from 2.10pm . Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. In a statement on Aug 12 , SBS Transit group chief executive Jeffrey Sim said the disruption was caused by a failure of the power switchboard at the NEL depot's substation. This led to a flashover – an unintended electrical discharge – in a voltage transformer used to regulate the power supply. 'This resulted in a trip in both the main and backup power supply as part of the power protection mechanism,' he added. Power was drawn from SBS Transit's other substation in Dhoby Ghaut as the faulty voltage transformer at the NEL depot substation could not be repaired immediately after the power trip. SBS Transit said on Aug 12 that the engineers would work to restore the power supply to the faulty substation during engineering hours, when there is no passenger service.

Carlos Alcaraz defies sweltering conditions in Cincinnati win

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox CINCINNATI - Carlos Alcaraz beat the heat and humidity of a Midwest summer as the world number two advanced to the fourth round of the ATP and WTA Cincinnati Open on Aug 12. The Spanish second seed kept his exposure to a minimum in 32 deg C conditions, taking an efficient 95 minutes to dispatch Serb Hamad Medjedovic 6-4, 6-4, for his 50th match win of the year. 'Medjedovic doesn't like to run that much, so I tried to move him around as much as possible,' Alcaraz said. 'But it was difficult with the ball flying so much and his shots coming so fast. I tried to defend in a good way.' Alcaraz has been on a tear in 2025 as he chases Jannik Sinner in the ATP rankings, and now owns 13 straight victories at the Masters 1000 level. He will play for the quarter-finals against Luca Nardi after the Italian defeated Jakob Mensik 6-2, 2-1 with the Czech retiring after 42 minutes. Five-time Grand Slam winner Alcaraz, who is preparing for the approaching US Open start, added: 'I was really happy to get the win in a very difficult match. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. 'But you have to stay positive and play your best tennis on the day. I'm proud about that. It's a goal of the season.' Francisco Comesano and Reilly Opelka both felt the heat of their mid-day match, which was interrupted for 45 minutes by rain, as the Argentine limped to a 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-5 win while saving three match points. Comesano needed a medical time out midway through the second set, but came back out to continue what turned into a fight of nearly three hours against the American. Opelka called for the doctor just moments from his eventual loss, complaining of dizziness and high blood pressure after being broken for 5-6 in the final set. After a quick consultation at his chair, Opelka was back on court to weakly scoop a return into the net on his opponent's second match point. The 71st-ranked South American will face ninth seed Andrey Rublev, who beat Australian Alexei Popyrin 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5), 7-5. Opelka, noted for his big serve, fired 27 aces but also committed nearly 60 unforced errors. Comesano broke on four of his 13 chances. He is the first Argentine into the Cincy round of 16 since Diego Schwartzman in 2022. Gauff wins by walkover In the WTA draw, second seed Coco Gauff eased into the fourth round when opponent Dayana Yastremska withdrew before their match on Aug 12. The American, who won the 2023 Cincinnati title and followed up with a US Open crown, will await an opponent from former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko and Italian Lucia Bronzetti. Yastremska was unable to play due to illness, the WTA said. Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini, last season's Roland Garros and Wimbledon finalist, defeated American Ashlyn Krueger 7-6, (7/2), 6-1, while German qualifier Ella Seidel continued her strong showing with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (8/6) defeat of McCartney Kessler. Two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova outlasted American Iva Jovic 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. AFP
