AI-generated Anime: The future of animation or the death of art?

Legendary director Hayao Miyazaki even warned that AI-made animation can be 'an insult to life itself', highlighting fears that algorithms might lack the human touch behind emotional storytelling. At the same time, new AI tools promise to speed up production and democratize creativity. In short: is AI a powerful assistant for anime, or is it threatening to replace artists? AI tools powering new Anime Today's AI toolset can do remarkable things. For example, EbSynth lets artists paint a single keyframe and automatically propagates that style across an entire video sequence, transforming raw animation into a stylized scene. Runway ML is a creative suite with advanced 'image-to-video' features, enabling users to generate and refine animated clips with just a few reference images. Major software makers are also adding AI: for instance, Adobe's Firefly and Sensei engines can turn text or sketches into polished characters and backgrounds (and even animate them) with minimal effort. For example, Firefly can generate anime-like character art from prompts, while Character Animator adds real-time motion to illustrations. These tools deliver major advantages. They can automate time-consuming tasks (like in-between frames or complex backgrounds), letting even small teams produce polished animation much faster. Industry analysts note that advanced models can create high-quality, emotionally expressive anime art 'with minimal technical expertise'. The result is a kind of democratization of anime: hobbyists and independent artists can now experiment with ambitious projects that would have needed a large studio before. AI models (many based on GANs and diffusion) are capturing finer details – facial expressions, lighting, textures – with speed and consistency that rival traditional methods. Case study: Netflix 's The Dog & The Boy Credits: One high-profile example is Netflix Japan's 2023 short 'The Dog & The Boy'. This 3-minute sci-fi anime about a boy and his robot dog made headlines because all of its background art was generated by AI. In March 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a series of AI-made Studio Ghibli–inspired portraits of himself. Other influencers have posted 'Ghiblified' images of daily life, underscoring how fascinated Indian audiences are by this AI art wave. At the same time, Indian animation studios are experimenting with AI. A recent Indian industry survey noted that studios are adopting AI for storyboarding, previsualization, and even script-generation to boost efficiency and creativity. The future of Anime in an AI world So where does this leave the anime art form? For now, most experts envision collaboration, not replacement. As Goro Miyazaki acknowledged, a completely AI-made anime might happen soon, but human vision remains central. India's creative leaders talk about AI enabling new styles and workflows, rather than killing off animation. In practice, we're likely headed for a hybrid future: AI will handle rote work and rapid prototyping, while human artists inject emotion, originality and storytelling. The question – 'AI-Generated Anime: future or death of art?' – is itself driving fresh creativity. Some artists are embracing AI as a new brush, while others push back to protect traditional craft. The real answer may be in the balance. For the global anime industry (and its booming Indian market), the challenge will be to integrate AI with respect for creators and originality. If managed well, AI might revolutionize the future of animation , accelerating projects and expanding what's possible. But if mishandled, it could indeed dim the unique spirit of hand-drawn anime. With over 20 years of experience in the food and beverage industry, he began his career in the heart-of-house as an Executive Steward and went on to manage beverage programs, banquets, lounges, and fine dining restaurants at iconic properties such as the Waldorf Astoria New York and The Pierre. Drushel has held leadership roles at Loews Coronado Bay Resort, Agua Caliente Casino, and most recently as Area Food & Beverage Director for Avalon Hotel & Bungalows and Ingleside Estate & Bungalows, which includes the historic Melvyn's Restaurant in Palm Springs. In his free time, Drushel enjoys hosting friends at home, experimenting with recipes and cocktails from his extensive cookbook collection, and hiking or exploring new places with his partner Phil and their dog, Duke. Joan Marte Marte is joining the Sensei team as Director of Operations, where she will be managing the day-to-day operations of the property, from accommodations to safety and security, golf and tennis, and more. With a BS in Hospitality Management, she brings almost 15 years of luxury hotel and resort leadership experience, with a background that includes Walt Disney World, Four Seasons, and Montage International. Most recently, Marte served as the Director of Rooms at Montage Big Sky, where she was responsible for the ultra-luxury operation of 100 rooms, 39 residences, 15 mountain homes, and 35 inn units. Leading the pre-opening team at the resort, Marte played a key role in training and helping the property achieve a Forbes Five-Star rating within its first year of evaluation. In her free time, Marte enjoys traveling the world to immerse herself in other cultures, volunteering in her community, partaking in outdoor activities, and recharging through the spa. Nicolas Galli With 10 years of experience in finance and a degree in Hospitality Management, Galli joins the Sensei team as Director of Finance. He began his career as a Management Trainee and went on to supervise accounts receivable at the St. Regis Aspen. He has held leadership roles as the Director of Finance at Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs, the Heathman Hotel, and the Woodlark Hotel. FUKUOKA -- A music festival held in this southwestern Japan city on Showa Day on April 29 took visitors back in time with a series of classic songs from the Showa era (1926-1989). The "Showa 100 Year Bayside Song Festival" was hosted by the Bayside Place Hakata entertainment complex in Fukuoka's Hakata Ward on a specially prepared outdoor stage in front of visitors who reveled in the nostalgia. Performers included the big band Dan Ishida & Newbricco, based at the Acros Fukuoka concert hall, and others with numbers including Megumi Asaoka's "Watashi no Kare wa Hidarikiki," Masako Mori's "Sensei," and Agnes Chan's "Sogen no Kagayaki," which drew enthusiastic applause from the audience. Toshio Fujinaga, 55, a civil servant visiting from Kitakyushu, remarked, "All the songs are ones that are still great to listen to. During the Showa era, everyone gave it their all." His wife Shinomi, 54, added, "I love Seiko Matsuda and still go to her concerts." Showa-era goods and records were also sold at the venue and a DJ event was held by the retro "kayokyoku" karaoke bar "Spotlight," enveloping the area in Showa memories.

Larry Ellison's Sensei Resorts Gear Up for a Global Expansion

When the billionaire founder of Oracle Corp. Larry Ellison snapped up the Hawaiian island of Lanai in 2012, he also got two coveted Four Seasons resorts. The $450-million renovation of the property at Manele Bay that he undertook was considered trailblazing for its over-the-top luxury, including a $21,000-a-night suite. Fewer people buzzed over his reinvention of the neighboring, 34-acre Koele Lodge. But the first Sensei wellness resort, which opened in 2018, would technically be far more visionary. Fast-forward and it's Sensei that Ellison is hoping to scale into his own global brand. Co-founded with physician and biomedical researcher David Agus, Sensei aimed to leverage science and technology to help people live longer, better lives, well before these types of places became a cultural craze.
