AI-generated anime has taken the internet by storm, sparking a debate over the future of animation. AI is now 'permeat[ing] the creative realm'raising questions about its influence on art, copyright and the livelihood of traditional animators.

even warned that AI-made animation can be 'an insult to life itself', highlighting fears that algorithms might lack the human touch behind emotional storytelling. At the same time, new AI tools promise to speed up production and democratize creativity. In short: is AI a powerful assistant for anime, or is it threatening to replace artists?
AI tools powering new Anime
Today's AI toolset can do remarkable things. For example, EbSynth lets artists paint a single keyframe and automatically propagates that style across an entire video sequence, transforming raw animation into a stylized scene.
Runway ML is a creative suite with advanced 'image-to-video' features, enabling users to generate and refine animated clips with just a few reference images. Major software makers are also adding AI: for instance, Adobe's Firefly and Sensei engines can turn text or sketches into polished characters and backgrounds (and even animate them) with minimal effort.

One high-profile example is Netflix Japan's 2023 short 'The Dog & The Boy'. This 3-minute sci-fi anime about a boy and his robot dog made headlines because

of its background art was generated by AI. Netflix's anime arm explained that it used an in-house AI (based on DALL·E) trained on thousands of images from its catalogue to help during a Japanese anime labor shortage.
Concept art was first drawn by a human, then repeatedly processed with AI and hand-tweaked.
The result looked visually acceptable, but the way it was made provoked outrage. When Netflix tweeted about the experiment, many fans and artists accused the company of using AI 'to avoid paying human artists'. On social media, comments criticized the approach as unethical (AI models are often trained on
scraped
human art) and dehumanizing.
The short's credits even listed 'Human' vs. 'AI+Human' for background art, which many found disrespectful. Industry figures joined in: a union leader said the backgrounds looked 'hackneyed' and 'not original'. Mashable's review agreed that criticism of the AI work was 'fair'. In short, Netflix's AI experiment made global headlines – not because the story was bad, but because it touched a nerve in the animation community.
Creative concerns vs. Technological benefits
The debate is now front and center in anime circles. On one side, many artists worry that AI could erode the craft of animation. At the same time, Indian animation studios are experimenting with AI. A recent Indian industry survey noted that studios are adopting AI for storyboarding, previsualization, and even script-generation to boost efficiency and creativity.
The future of Anime in an AI world
So where does this leave the anime art form? For now, most experts envision collaboration, not replacement. As Goro Miyazaki acknowledged, a completely AI-made anime
might
happen soon, but human vision remains central. India's creative leaders talk about AI enabling
new
styles and workflows, rather than killing off animation.
In practice, we're likely headed for a hybrid future: AI will handle rote work and rapid prototyping, while human artists inject emotion, originality and storytelling.

250+ startups and counting, with Runway Incubator at UPES
India has emerged as one of the world's most dynamic startup ecosystems, currently home to over 119 unicorns (Tracxn, 2025) and thousands of ventures disrupting traditional industries. Ranked third globally in terms of the number of startups, the country continues to benefit from government-led initiatives focused on building job creators rather than just job seekers. Runway is grounded in a philosophy that seeks to lower barriers to entrepreneurship—especially for students from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, many of whom are first-generation entrepreneurs. The incubator welcomes students from all disciplines—engineering, law, design, liberal studies—encouraging interdisciplinary innovation. The focus is not just on launching startups, but on building ventures that solve real-world problems. Support spans a curated pre-incubation program, access to co-working spaces, labs for prototyping, legal and IP advisory, training in the art of pitching and GTM strategy, and mentorship from ecosystem experts and industry leaders. This culture has already given rise to several promising startups such as: UGreen Technology Founded by Gaurav Dwivedi ( Petroleum Engineering, UPES, 2019–2023), UGreen Technology is a CleanTech venture that began as a bold idea, and Runway was the first to believe in it. UGreen launched India's first carbon capture pilot for the E&P sector. Its flagship product, OCOFix, uses a patented molecular engineering method to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries. With ₹92.5 lakh raised through grants and a ₹4 crore funding round in the pipeline, UGreen is setting the pace in climate innovation. Gaurav thanks his alma mater for the exposure and access to cutting-edge labs for his success. 'The professors believed in my ideas even before they were fully formed. Their mentorship was instrumental in turning an idea on paper into a national-level CleanTech startup,' he says. Pension Box Founded by Kuldeep Parashar ( Applied Petroleum Engineering, UPES, 2010–2014), Pension Box is helping India rethink retirement. It offers a digital pension infrastructure that enables users, especially gig workers and the self-employed, to plan, automate, and manage their retirement savings effortlessly. With ₹7 crore in funding from marquee investors, including the founders of Zerodha, the platform has grown rapidly and become a thought leader in the retirement tech space. Kuldeep credits UPES for having instilled in him the confidence to think beyond the obvious. 'The faculty not only taught us what was in the books but also challenged us to apply that knowledge in real-world scenarios. That mindset helped shape my entrepreneurial journey,' he says. Indian Hempstore Founded by Siddharth Gupta (MBA, Logistics, Materials, and Supply Chain Management, UPES, 2013–2015), Indian Hempstore is building India's first hybrid marketplace for hemp-based products. The venture promotes sustainable alternatives across fashion, food, wellness, and lifestyle, while also supporting rural producers and artisans. The idea took root during Siddharth's time at UPES, where early exposure to sustainable practices inspired him to explore hemp as a future-ready material. With support from Runway, Indian Hempstore has fulfilled over 2,000 orders, onboarded 40+ brands, and generated over ₹15 lakh in revenue, helping position hemp as a planet-positive solution for the future. Siddharth credits UPES and Runway for enabling him to channel his purpose into a scalable business. Japan's moon-landing attempt ends in failure, ispace's lander falls silent

Flight controllers scrambled to gain contact, but were met with only silence and said they were concluding the mission. Communications ceased less than two minutes before the spacecraft's scheduled landing on the moon with a mini rover. Until then, the descent from lunar orbit seemed to be going well. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD CEO and founder Takeshi Hakamada apologised to everyone who contributed to the mission, the second lunar strikeout for Ispace. Two years ago, the company's first moonshot ended in a crash landing, giving rise to the name 'Resilience' for its successor lander. Resilience carried a rover with a shovel to gather lunar dirt as well as a Swedish artist's toy-size red house for placement on the moon's dusty surface. Company officials said it was too soon to know whether the same problem doomed both missions. 'This is the second time that we were not able to land. So we really have to take it very seriously,' Hakamada told reporters. He stressed that the company would press ahead with more lunar missions. A preliminary analysis indicates the laser system for measuring the altitude did not work as planned, and the lander descended too fast, officials said. 'Based on these circumstances, it is currently assumed that the lander likely performed a hard landing on the lunar surface,' the company said in a written statement. Long the province of governments, the moon became a target of private outfits in 2019, with more flops than wins along the way. Launched in January from Florida on a long, roundabout journey, Resilience entered lunar orbit last month. It shared a SpaceX ride with Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, which reached the moon faster and became the first private entity to successfully land there in March. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Another U.S. company, Intuitive Machines, arrived at the moon a few days after Firefly. But the tall, spindly lander face-planted in a crater near the moon's south pole and was declared dead within hours. Resilience was targeting the top of the moon, a less treacherous place than the shadowy bottom. The ispace team chose a flat area with few boulders in Mare Frigoris or Sea of Cold, a long and narrow region full of craters and ancient lava flows that stretches across the near side's northern tier. Plans had called for the 7.5-foot (2.3-meter) Resilience to beam back pictures within hours and for the lander to lower the piggybacking rover onto the lunar surface this weekend. Made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic with four wheels, ispace's European-built rover — named Tenacious — sported a high-definition camera to scout out the area and a shovel to scoop up some lunar dirt for NASA. The rover, weighing just 11 pounds (5 kilograms), was going to stick close to the lander, going in circles at a speed of less than one inch (a couple centimeters) per second. It was capable of venturing up to two-thirds of a mile (1 kilometer) from the lander and should be operational throughout the two-week mission, the period of daylight. The rover held a tiny, Swedish-style red cottage with white trim and a green door, dubbed the Moonhouse by creator Mikael Genberg, for placement on the lunar surface. 'Engineers did everything they possibly could' to ensure success this time, he said. He considered the latest moonshot 'merely a stepping stone' to its bigger lander launching by 2027 with NASA involvement. Ispace, like other businesses, does not have 'infinite funds' and cannot afford repeated failures, Jeremy Fix, chief engineer for ispace's U.S. subsidiary, said at a conference last month. While not divulging the cost of the current mission, company officials said it's less than the first one, which exceeded $100 million. Two other U.S. companies are aiming for moon landings by year's end: Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Astrobotic Technology. Astrobotic's first lunar lander missed the moon altogether in 2024 and came crashing back through Earth's atmosphere. Of those, only the U.S. has landed people on the moon: 12 NASA astronauts from 1969 through 1972. NASA expects to send four astronauts around the moon next year. That would be followed a year or more later by the first lunar landing by a crew in more than a century, with SpaceX's Starship providing the lift from lunar orbit all the way down to the surface. China also has moon landing plans for its own astronauts by 2030.
