Breastfeeding week observed with awareness programmes

Public and private healthcare providers in Tiruchi have been observing World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) from August 1 to 7, with a host of awareness programmes. The theme of this year's WBW, an initiative of the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, is 'Prioritise breastfeeding: create sustainable support systems'. 'Mother's milk plays an important role in improving an infant's immunity and developmental milestones. Despite this, a large number of women are reluctant to breastfeed their children due to social pressure. We are counselling young lactating mothers to prefer breast milk over formula for their infants,' S. Padmapriya, paediatrician at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) told The Hindu. Rising awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding have also led to a rise in the number of donors of mother's milk at the MGMGH breast milk bank, she said. 'This year, we have recorded 192 litres of milk from 639 donors that has benefited 634 children up to July. In 2024, the bank received 288 litres of breast milk from 727 donors, that benefited 776 children. With the creation of segregated spaces for feeding mothers in public areas, and the government campaigns, breastfeeding must become a common choice,' said Dr. Padmapriya. MGMGH observed the week with a rally, and special programmes for antenatal mothers. A workshop on breastfeeding and well-baby competition were also organised. 'According to data from the National Family Health Survey 5, only 41.8% of women initiate breastfeeding within the first hour of birth, and approximately 53% of mothers are giving exclusive breastfeeding for six months. We have held several events this week with the aim of improving these rates,' said K. Senthil Kumar, neonatologist, Maa Kauvery Hospital. Besides counselling in-patient antenatal mothers, the hospital organised orientation sessions for anganwadi workers this week. 'Breastfeeding can be beneficial to mothers. It aids in postpartum weight loss, protects against certain cancers, and promotes a special bond with the baby,' said Dr. Senthil Kumar.

TN school teacher booked under Goondas Act for sexually abusing over 20 students

A government school teacher in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district has been detained under the stringent Goondas Act after being accused of sexually abusing more than 20 students. The accused, M. Senthil Kumar (50), a resident of Iduhatty near Udhagamandalam, was working as a science teacher in a government school when the allegations came to light. Senthil Kumar, who has served as a teacher for more than 23 years in various government schools across Tamil Nadu, had only recently been posted to the Nilgiris. The disturbing revelations emerged during an awareness programme conducted by the district police to educate students about sexual harassment and abuse. During these sessions, several students reported that their teacher had been sexually assaulting them since his appointment at the school. Following the students' complaints, the police registered a case against Senthil Kumar under Section 75(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for sexual harassment, along with relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. He was also booked under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, as some of the victims belong to marginalised communities. Senthil Kumar was arrested earlier this month and remanded to judicial custody. In view of the serious nature of the offences and the potential threat posed by the accused, Nilgiris Superintendent of Police N.S. Nisha recommended detention under the Goondas Act -- a preventive measure used against habitual offenders and those considered a danger to public order. Acting on the recommendation, the District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru approved the order, and served the orders to Senthil Kumar, who is already lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison. The police have now widened the scope of their investigation to include the schools where Senthil Kumar had previously worked. Authorities are trying to determine whether similar offences were committed in his earlier postings. Officials have urged any additional victims to come forward as part of the ongoing inquiry. The case has sent shockwaves across the Nilgiris district, prompting calls for stricter background checks and surveillance mechanisms within educational institutions to ensure student safety.

Government school teacher accused of molesting over 20 students booked under Goondas Act in Ooty

A 50-year-old government school teacher, who is alleged to have molested more than 20 students has been booked under the Goondas Act in the Nilgiris district. The accused, identified as M. Senthil Kumar (50) from Iduhatty in Udhagamandalam, had been working as a science teacher at a government school in the Nilgiris. He is said to have been working as a teacher for over 23 years in different parts of Tamil Nadu and had transferred to the school in Udhagamandalam a few months ago. It has been said that the Nilgiris district police, who have been conducting awareness programmes to sensitise school students on sexual assault, harassment and sexual violence committed against children, were informed by students that their teacher had sexually assaulted them since he joined the school. So far, more than 20 students have come forward and have alleged that they were molested by the accused. Police said that they have widened their investigation to schools where Senthil Kumar has worked over the last two decades to ascertain if he had committed the crime on other children. Senthil Kumar was arrested earlier this month under Sections 75(2) (sexual harassment) of the BNS Act and various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, including sexual assault, as well as the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Based on the recommendation of the Nilgiris district superintendent of police N.S. Nisha, orders were passed by the Collector to book Senthil Kumar under the Goondas Act, who has currently been lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
