4 arrested in Erode double murder case
Tamil Nadu police arrested a gang of three burglars and a jeweller, on Monday for their alleged involvement in the murder of an elderly couple in Erode district on April 28, officers aware of the matter said, adding that the three burglars have admitted that they were also involved in the triple murder that took place in Tiruppur's Palladam last year. Police identified the elderly couple as Ramasamy, 75, and his wife Bakkiyammal, 65, who were residing in their farmhouse in Erode. After the bodies were recovered, police launched an investigation into the murders and formed 12 special teams. Police first caught P Achiappan (48) on May 17 and he confessed to the murder and burglary, which led them to the arrest N Madeshwaran (53), and R Ramesh (52). Following investigation, the trio, who were associated with coconut trade, were arrested on Monday, police added. 'The accused attacked the couple using wooden sticks on April 28, and have confessed to the crime. They stole 20 sovereigns of gold. We have seized 82 grams of gold jewellery, which they gave to an Arachalure-based jeweller, Gnanasekaran, who melted them and kept the metal with him. Gnanasekaran was also arrested, and all four were remanded in judicial custody,' West Zone IG T Senthilkumar told reporters. According to Senthilkumar, their son, Kavishankar, who lives in a different village nearly 20 km away, tried to call their parents on May 1, but the phone calls were not answered. Worried, he called his relatives residing on neighbouring farms and asked them to go and check on his parents. They found the couple dead with multiple injuries and the bodies decaying in the farmhouse, he added. Police said that the three burglars have also confessed to having murdered another three people in a different case in November 2024. An elderly couple and their son were found dead inside a farmhouse in Tiruppur's Palladam and eight sovereigns of gold were missing. Since there was no headway in the case, it was transferred to the CB-CID in March. The accused primarily used to target older couples living alone, police added. 'On November 29 last year, a local barber had gone to their farmhouse and found the bodies of Deivasigamani, 78, his wife, Alamelu, 75 and their son, Senthil Kumar. The son who lived in the nearby Coimbatore district had come to meet his parents the previous night,' Senthilkumar said. 'Their involvement in other cases will be confirmed after taking them into police custody and following further investigation,' the IG said, adding that the three had previously been booked in theft cases. Amrut scheme stalled as Centre delays guidelines to states
Chennai: Despite allocating around 10,000 crore for the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) 2.0 extension scheme meant for civic work across the country, the Union govt is yet to issue guidelines to states on how to frame in Oct 2021, the five-year Amrut 2.0 aims to ensure water supply and sewerage coverage in 4,900 towns. In TN, 28 cities and towns have so far received approvals for projects worth 14,688 crore, including 4,942 crore in central assistance. As per the norms, guidelines are issued soon after the fund allocation in the central budget, which are to be followed by civic bodies creating model projects to receive the administration and water supply (MAWS) department officials said they have been waiting for five months now for the guidelines and the delay has resulted in holding back key water and sewerage projects in at least 28 cities in the state."In core city areas, most sewer pipelines belong to the British era, and their capacity has reduced due to urbanization. This is also causing reverse flow. With the Amrut funds, we plan to replace them. Apart from this, we also need to showcase model projects to receive allocations for the specific projects," an official told said they have prepared a city water balance plan for all 158 urban local bodies (20 corporations and 138 municipalities). For cities with a population of more than 10 lakh, the Union govt will provide a 33% project share, the state will provide 20%, and the local body will provide 47%. For cities with less than 10 lakh population, the Union govt will contribute the maximum share of 50%, followed by 20% by the state and 30% by the local body.K Senthilkumar, a civic activist, said govts make big announcements in the budget, but it takes nearly a year for the funds to trickle down to local bodies. "Many areas of Chennai, including new corporations such as Tambaram and Avadi, neither have end-to-end water supply nor sewage lines," he officials said they will provide representations to issue fresh guidelines for projects that can be carried out in the extension scheme.

Lorry owners stage demonstration in Namakkal demanding reopening of Sterlite Copper Factory
The members of the Paramathi-Velur Taluk Lorry Owners Association staged a demonstration demanding that the Tamil Nadu government issue a Government Order (GO) to reopen the Sterlite Copper Factory in Thoothukudi on Tuesday. Over hundreds of lorry owners and drivers participated in the protest held at the association office ground in Paramathi Velur. Speaking at the demonstration, association president K. Senthilkumar said that the closure of Sterlite Copper has severely affected not just Tamil Nadu but also the livelihood of lorry drivers and their families across Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. At its peak, the plant relied on nearly 1,000 lorries daily, providing a vital source of income to thousands. Due to the plant's closure, over 600 lorry owners have been forced to take up driver roles to survive. Drivers, their assistants, and families are now battling unemployment and financial distress as many ancillary businesses have also shut down. The shutdown has resulted in a daily revenue loss exceeding Rs. 10 crore in the region. Small businesses such as mechanic shops, tea stalls, and tire repair outlets have suffered significant income losses due to decreased transportation activity, Mr. Senthilkumar added. Alleging that the Sterlite plant's closure may have been influenced by misinformation or unseen malicious forces, Mr. Senthilkumar said that the Tamil Nadu government should take control of the plant's operations and appoint an expert committee to monitor its functioning. The plant should be reopened under strict environmental oversight using advanced technology. A special government order should be issued to ensure responsible and transparent operations. The reopening of the facility would help boost the economy, contribute significantly to the state's revenue, support domestic and global copper supply demands, and prevent further damage to local industries and livelihoods, he added.
