News: Ulsan HD Appoint Shin Tae-yong as New Manager
Ulsan HD have announced the appointment of Shin Tae-yong as the club's new manager. On August 5th, Ulsan appointed Shin Tae-yong as their 13th head coach. Just a few days earlier, on Sunday (August 3rd), the club announced the mutual termination of the contract with their 12th head coach, Kim Pan-gon. Despite winning three consecutive K League 1 titles recently, Ulsan have struggled this season. To reorganize the team and refresh the atmosphere, they have chosen Shin Tae-yong, renowned for his leadership with national teams and clubs in Korea, Indonesia, and beyond, as their next head coach. Shin Tae-yong is a K League legend. During his playing career, he was a one-club man with Seongnam Ilhwa (now Seongnam FC), appearing in 405 matches and recording 102 goals and 69 assists. He became the first player in K League history to reach both 60 goals and 60 assists in 2003. He led Seongnam to six K League titles. In 2023, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Korean professional football, he was inducted into the inaugural class of the K League Hall of Fame as a third-generation representative. After retiring, Shin began his coaching career in 2009 as caretaker manager for Seongnam. In his first season, he led the team to runners-up finishes in both the K League and the FA Cup. In 2010, he became the full-time manager and guided the team to the AFC Champions League title, followed by an FA Cup win in 2011. Recognized for his coaching skills, Shin went on to serve as a coach for the Korean national team and later managed the squads for the Rio 2016 Olympics and the U20 World Cup hosted in Korea in 2017. At the U20 World Cup, he famously led Korea to a win over powerhouses Argentina. On July 4, 2017, Shin took over the Korean national team after Uli Stielike was dismissed. Although Korea did not advance to the round of 16 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Shin orchestrated a shocking 2-0 victory over defending champions Germany in the final group stage match. This game, dubbed the 'Miracle of Kazan,' stunned the global football community. Shin's counterattacking tactics proved successful, goalkeeper Jo Hyun-woo delivered a stellar performance against a barrage of German attacks, and Kim Young-gwon scored the opening goal, igniting a historic moment. Now, seven years later, he reunites with both players at Ulsan. Shin later expanded his coaching career across Asia, becoming the head coach of the Indonesian national team in December 2019. He made history by leading Indonesia to the round of 16 at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar. In 2024, he also managed the Indonesian U23 team and led them to the semifinals of the U23 Asian Cup, even defeating Korea along the way. Through this international experience, Shin played a key role in enhancing the reputation and competence of Korean coaches abroad. After parting ways with Indonesia earlier this year, Shin returned to Seongnam in April in a part-time role as general manager to help rebuild his old club. Amid this, he received an offer from Ulsan and, after much deliberation, decided to take on the challenge and help the team overcome its current struggles. New Head Coach Shin Tae-yong stated: 'When I first received Ulsan's offer, I was happy, but I also felt a lot of pressure. Ulsan have always been considered one of the strongest teams in the K League. I am convinced that if we overcome this difficult period, better days will surely come. I will dedicate all my capabilities to restoring the team's glory.' Interview Q. How do you feel about returning to the K League after 13 years and becoming the 13th head coach of Ulsan? I'm truly honored and happy to be appointed as the head coach of Ulsan HD. During my playing days, I played many matches against Ulsan and visited Ulsan Munsu Stadium quite often, but every time I came, it was always tough because they were such a strong team. I never imagined I would be coming here as a head coach. I will work hard and do my best to help both my career and Ulsan HD grow into an even more prestigious club. Q. How does it feel to return to Ulsan Munsu Stadium? As a player, I visited Ulsan Munsu Stadium quite often, but this is my first time coming here as a head coach. I have many memories of how difficult it was to play against Ulsan HD. However, now that I've been appointed as the coach, I will do my best to show our fans just how fierce and brave a team Ulsan HD can be, living up to the "tiger" image. Q. There's also interest in your reunion with former players like Jung Woo-young, Jo Hyeon-woo, Kim Young-gwon, and Lee Chung-yong. Those players, along with Lee Jin-hyun, Jeong Seung-hyeon, and Kang Sang-woo, were all with me during the Olympics. It feels great to reunite with my former players. We'll become a "One Club, One Team" together, and we'll have discussions about what areas we need to improve going forward. The players need to help us get through this difficult period, so we'll talk about how we'll build things up. Rather than jumping straight into 'Let's do this or that,' I think we need to talk a lot about how to quickly refresh the team atmosphere and move in a positive direction. Q. Since you've taken over mid-season, the key theme is 'rebound.' Any message to the fans who are waiting for that turnaround? It seems like Ulsan HD have been through a tough time after returning from the Club World Cup. But what I can say with confidence is that this is a good team, and we will bounce back. I ask the fans to be a little more patient and to believe in me, Shin Tae-yong, and support us. Even if we don't win the title, I will do my best to make sure we become a team that comes close to winning.

Newcastle United fans, there's a K League team you can adopt - South Korea's Magpies
English Premier League side and 2025-2026 Carabao Cup winners Newcastle United FC will travel to South Korea this summer for pre-season, where they will play Team K League and Tottenham Hotspur in the 2025 Coupang Play Series. Newcastle United's fans should know a few things about Korean football before arriving in Korea, one of which is the existence of a similar club on the outskirts of the capital region, which shares the same nickname and a similar history, Seongnam FC. Fans of Newcastle United should consider adopting Seongnam FC as an "affiliate club," and the reasons are below. Nickname "The Magpies" and Team Identity Both clubs share the same nickname, but for different reasons. Newcastle United adopted the nickname "The Magpies" due to the famous black and white stripes on their jersey, similar to the plumage of the magpie. On the other hand, Seongnam FC adopted the same nickname when they moved from Cheonan to Seongnam. The city of Seongnam is heavily linked with the bird magpie, and so, the then newly relocated Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma changed their identity, from the logo going from a Pegasus to a magpie and the jersey going from a bright yellow to a black and white striped jersey. Early Success In The Early Years Newcastle and Seongnam enjoyed some success shortly after their foundation. The English club went on to win three English first division titles and one FA Cup in the first 20 years of existence and then many more titles throughout the 1920s, 1950s, and 1960s, including two minor continental trophies. Seongnam also had a great start to life. In the first 20 years of their existence, Seongnam FC won seven K League titles (Korean first division), one Korean FA Cup, three Korean League Cups, one Super Cup, and three major continental titles, two of them being the AFC Champions League and the other one being the Asian Super Cup. The "Sleeping Giant" Newcastle United and Seongnam FC had a beautiful start to life, but both fell away somewhat. Both clubs have played second division football multiple times; Newcastle most recently in the 2016-17 season, and Seongnam has been playing in K League 2 since 2023. The South Korean magpies are struggling to come back to the K League, finishing rock bottom in K League 2 in 2024 and being in the middle of the pack so far in the 2025 season. The lack of major silverware in recent years has taken its toll on the team's reputation, but, much like Newcastle, who ended their trophy drought last season with the Carabao Cup, without a doubt, both teams have a special place in their respective countries' football history. Easy and Free Access To Seongnam FC and Korean Football Matches Newcastle's fans who really want to give it a go to this "affiliate club" idea have the possibility to watch and follow Seongnam FC matches for free and very easily with Every single match from the K League and the K League 2 is streamed for free. For any Geordies who are travelling over to South Korea, Seongnam FC are away to Bucheon FC 1995 the day before the friendly with Tottenham Hotspur. Bucheon is also located in the capital area of South Korea. More information on how to get to Bucheon from Seoul can be foundhere.

Lee Jae-myung faces legal woes post-election
LEE Jae-myung could face a slew of legal woes if he wins South Korea's presidential vote Tuesday, becoming the first person to take high office in the country while under active prosecution. Most of his ongoing cases have been postponed by the courts until after the election and he has denied any wrongdoing, insisting the charges are politically motivated. Although presidents enjoy sweeping immunity, experts warn he faces legal jeopardy down the line. One of the most dramatic of Lee's cases involves a bribery charge in connection with a firm that is suspected of illicitly transferring US$8 million to North Korea. While Lee was governor of Gyeonggi province in 2019, South Korean media reports say he allegedly arranged for a prominent business figure to make the payments in exchange for supporting the company's initiatives. That included US$5 million his province was paying the nuclear-armed North for a "smart farm" project, and another US$3 million to fund a trip by Lee to the north which never happened. Lee is also facing four corruption cases, most connected to allegedly dubious development deals while he was Seongnam mayor. He's accused of approving a profit structure that unfairly benefited private developers, allegedly causing 489.5 billion won (US$356 million) in losses to the city. He is also accused of leaking official secrets, allegedly allowing private developers to earn 788.6 billion won. Two city officials linked to the project were later found dead in apparent suicides. He also allegedly granted special treatment to a private developer in a separate case, resulting in at least 20 billion won in losses to the city's public developer, which had been excluded from the deal. Lee faces additional charges of leaking internal information from another project in 2013, enabling private developers to earn 21.1 billion won in illicit profits. From 2014 to 2016, he also allegedly accepted 13.35 billion won in corporate sponsorships for Seongnam FC in return for development favours such as land use changes. The case that came closest to derailing his bid for top office was one concerning purportedly false statements he made on the presidential campaign trail in 2021. The nation's top court said the statements "misled voters in assessing the candidate's suitability for public office" and ordered a retrial, after a lower court dismissed the charges. That case has been postponed in light of the election. Lee also denied a personal relationship with an official who killed himself while under investigation for a controversial development project. Media reports claimed Lee and the official went on a business trip to New Zealand and Australia in 2015, during which they played golf. The presidential frontrunner is also accused of urging a witness to lie in court to downplay a past conviction. Lee was convicted and fined in 2002 in a TV journalist sting operation, but when he ran for Gyeonggi governor in 2018 he claimed he had been falsely accused. Lee was eventually acquitted, with the court ruling that he had merely expressed a personal sense of injustice. A separate case on this issue is still ongoing. Lee has also been indicted on charges of misappropriating 106.53 million won of public funds while serving as Gyeonggi governor. He is accused of covering meal and laundry expenses with a corporate card funded by the provincial budget, and misusing an official vehicle for personal purposes. Prosecutors allege Lee gained at least 60.16 million won in personal benefits by using an official vehicle for non-duty reasons, such as rental, fuel, and car wash costs. This month, an appeals court fined Lee's wife, Kim Hye-kyung, 1.5 million won for using provincial funds to cover a 104,000 won dinner in 2021 with spouses of current and former Democratic Party lawmakers, among others.
