Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Switch 2 update footage shows the "notorious frame drop lake" running at 60fps, and fans say it might be "the best possible advertisement" for the new console

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The Switch 2 is officially out tomorrow, and with it, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are getting a free update to improve their performance on the new console, with improved draw distance to load in even more wild Pokemon, as well as a boosted frame rate, finally bringing the adventures to 60fps. Considering how notoriously poorly Scarlet and Violet run on the original Switch – with problems like frame drops and stuttering still an issue over two years since launch – this is a massive deal, and the first gameplay footage and extended preview looks shown ahead of release have fans in a frenzy. Not only does everything look buttery smooth, but it remains that way even when embarking on Casseroya Lake. If you've spent any time at all in Scarlet and Violet's Paldea region, you'll know why this is a big deal. While far from the only location in the games to experience performance issues, it's largely considered one of the worst – stuttering and considerable frame rate drops while traveling across the water are commonplace. Or, at least, they were on the OG Switch, because Nintendo has jumped at the opportunity to show off what exploring the lake looks like now. As one stunned fan puts it, "the Casseroya Lake footage literally made me get up and stare at the screen like a 60-year-old father witnessing his football team score a goal on TV." Another adds that "showing the notorious frame drop lake at a crisp framerate was such a power play," while one fan argues that "this is the best possible advertisement they could have done for the Switch 2 oh my god." Again, it's not just a frame rate boost, as improved draw distance means a lot more wild Pokemon now populate the screen than ever before (potentially a huge boon for shiny hunters, might I add). Former Pokemon world champion Wolfe "Wolfey" Glick suspects that "if you tried to put that many Pokemon in the lake on my Switch from 2017 I think it would actually explode." All of these reactions were to the few short seconds of footage posted on the Nintendo Today app earlier this week, but since then, the owner of Pokemon news site Serebii, Joe Merrick, has shared even more from a preview event. His footage takes things to the next level, because that 60fps apparently remains consistent even in the rain, folks. "It is so beautiful," Merrick adds. It's just one day to go now before the Switch 2 is out and we can all try Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's update for ourselves – from what we've seen so far, it looks like there's never been a better time to explore Paldea. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's free update for Switch 2 has 'never looked better'

With updated 4K visuals, ScarVi is leaving gamers with surprisingly positive first impressions. The Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially released today, with fans scrambling to get their hands on one- if there are any retailer's with stock left, that is. The gaming giant is issuing completely free updates to several games for the new console, including Zelda: Link's Awakening, Super Mario Odyssey, and interestingly, Pokémon Scarlet And Violet. The Pokémon game (or technically, the duo of games) on the original Switch has been deemed famously unappealing in the past in terms of visuals. The new update has left gamers wondering if Nintendo have managed to fix these games that Eurogamer described as 'graphical and technical disasters'. The original Scarlet and Violet game(s) has been slammed on Reddit for being 'ugly', with users also complaining of technical errors when playing. But is it possible that Nintendo have managed to fix the visual and technical problems in their updates for ScarVi the new Switch 2? According to early impressions, maybe. ScarVi looks like a completely different game on the Switch 2, according to gaming experts at Nintendo Life. They said: "Okay, granted, it's still not a particularly attractive game, but the performance looks to be running at a mostly rock-solid 60fps, while the visuals have been upscaled to 4K. That's pretty darn impressive. "Not only that, but more Pokémon can be seen in the wild at any one time, and even things like the dreaded windmill have been improved." The Pokémon Violet game for the Switch is available on Amazon for £49.99, and those with the Switch 2 will be able to download the free update. Scarlet is available for slightly cheaper at £37.99, also on Amazon, and either Scarlet or Violet are available on Argos for £37.99. Game reviewer Serebii on YouTube released an early review for the game, and said they were 'incredibly surprised' to see that many of the performance errors from the original game had been fixed in the update. They also said the visuals had seen some serious improvements. They said: "The visuals themselves have seen a bit of improvement, the colours are more vibrant even without HDR, the light bounces off the water better, and the Pokémon models have never looked better. "The particles are just great and really pop, and this is further shown when you terastallize a Pokémon, either in a standard battle or as part of a Tera raid battle." The reviewer also explained that there have been serious improvements in the definition and detail of Pokémon when viewed from far away in the updated ScarVi game. However, there were still some issues with the visuals of the game, particularly in terms of the textures of the landscape. The reviewer continued: "That said, the textural work hasn't really improved for the overworld of Paldea, so you can see more repeating textures on the cliffs in the distance. "And with the increased visual fidelity, it does make [the cliffs] a bit more clear, which may mean you'll notice the repeating a bit more." Gamers who have already got their hands on the Nintendo Switch 2 will be able to download updates for certain games including ScarVi for free, and see these enhancements for themselves. Your OG Switch Isn't Quite Dead Yet, Even in the Switch 2 Era

Don't abandon your OG Switch just yet, even if you're jonesing to break the seal on your new Nintendo Switch 2 in the coming days. Overnight, Nintendo dropped a heap of updates to its original Switch games in time for its sequel handheld's Thursday launch. There's more beyond compatibility patches streaming to your favorite Switch games for the updated hardware. GameShare may help your Switch 2 become a portal for playing with friends on their older hardware with just a single copy of a game. Hell, if you don't plan on getting a Switch 2 any time soon, this feature may tide you over until the inevitable Switch 2 OLED. We now have a far better idea of how well original Switch games will run on the Switch 2. Some games are getting heftier improvements than others. Most notably, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will now run at an 'improved framerate'—likely 60 fps—and it will support higher resolutions. Nintendo revealed its own special trailer for the game running with increased performance, and it may be enough to give the 3-year-old title that was so broken at launch a new lease on life. Serebii Update: A trailer for Pokémon Scarlet & Violet for Nintendo Switch 2 has been released on the Nintendo Today app — (@SerebiiNet) June 2, 2025 There are several games, like the two Switch Legend of Zelda titles, that are receiving upgrade packs you'll need to pay for separately if you're not buying the Switch 2 version of the game. However, games like Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom are receiving patches to optimize the games for the Switch 2's 1080p handheld and 4K docked resolutions. ARMS, Nintendo's forgotten springy-limb fighting game, is supposed to get optimized for the Switch 2 Joy-Con's improved gyro controls. We've already had some experience with the new motion and rumble on Nintendo's controllers, and I can't help but wonder if these improvements are enough to dust off that old game card that has sat idle for eight years. Nintendo's first-party games aren't the only ones getting an upgrade. No Man's Sky is receiving a free Switch 2 edition that will finally allow for multiplayer alongside the improved visual capabilities on the new handheld. As spotted by gaming deal hound Wario64, Nintendo's support site shows Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Kirby Star Allies, Kirby's Dream Buffet, and Pikmin 3 Deluxe are receiving Switch 2 updates. Older Xenoblade and Pikmin games are currently out of luck, at least according to the latest posts on Nintendo's support site. a few more games that received Switch 2 updates (Several adjustments have been made to improve gameplay on Nintendo Switch 2.) -Super Mario Bros. Wonder -Kirby Star Allies -Kirby's Dream Buffet — Wario64 (@Wario64) June 4, 2025 Many of these first-party updates relate to GameShare. It's one of the few features conspicuously missing from our recent hands-on with the Switch 2, but it's one of the functions I'm most interested in considering how many of my friends still have access to their original Switch. With Switch 2, GameShare lets you and up to three friends access a select few games for co-op gameplay. Better yet, if you're playing over local wireless, your friends can use your original Switch to play alongside you without needing to buy an extra copy of the game. Nintendo shared more details about how this will work on the Nintendo Today! app. For instance, in Super Mario Odyssey, you can play the co-op mode where one player controls Mario while the other inhabits the orbiting sentient Cappy hat. Similarly, in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, you can play the two-player modes without needing to both use the same screen. If you're playing online, GameShare is tied with Nintendo's new GameChat feature that lets players talk, stream games, and video chat with each other while on Switch 2. This means you'll be restricted to playing with Switch 2 units only, as the original Switch doesn't support any of this screen-sharing functionality. We would also love to see more games support this feature. I'm not the only one imagining how nice it would be to play Super Smash Bros. with my friends on the road without needing to huddle around a single, miniature display. Considering the rising price of Nintendo's first-party titles—not to mention its limitations on game card file sizes incentivizing developers to adopt download-only games—GameShare is one of the few true pro-consumer upgrades coming to Switch 2. It means you and your friends don't necessarily need to all own a copy of these select games. As long as one of your friend group owns a Switch 2, the rest of your friends can play together in the same room or online.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Become Second Best-Selling Games in the Series

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Nintendo has just released its latest quarterly financial report, revealing that the latest games in the Pokémon mainline series, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, have risen to the position of second best-selling games in the entire series. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which were released in November 2022, have now sold 26.79 million units, surpassing the previous generation pair of games, which are currently sitting on 26.72 million units sold. The best-selling games in the series remain Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue for the original Game Boy, which have combined sales of over 31 million units. Nintendo As noted by Serebii webmaster Joe Merrick, Scarlet and Violet overtaking Sword and Shield is also the first time the second generation of games on a single system – in this case the Nintendo Switch – has outsold the first generation released on the same system. It's worth noting that this also the first time a second generation on a console has outsold the first GB Red, Green & Blue: 31.38m Gold & Silver: 23.7m DS Diamond & Pearl: 17.67m Black & White: 15.64m 3DS X & Y: 16.78m Sun & Moon: 16.33m — Joe Merrick (@JoeMerrick) May 8, 2025 Pokémon Scarlet and Violet were first released on the Nintendo Switch in late 2022, where they received equal parts praise and criticism from media and players alike. Players praised the games for their innovative gameplay improvements, including the addition of a full open world for the first time in the series' history, but they were heavily criticised for performance issues, bugs at launch, and poor visual quality. The games subsequently received a number of post-launch patches, which reduced the number of bugs experienced by most players, but the poor performance and visual quality remained the same, even after the release of paid DLC in 2023. Nintendo has announced that Scarlet and Violet will be getting updates following the release of the Nintendo Switch 2 which will allow the games to take advantage of the more powerful hardware, but no further details have been announced about these updates. The milestone comes ahead of the release of a brand-new Pokémon game on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, Pokémon Legends Z-A, which will take players back to the Kalos region first featured in Pokémon X and Y for the Nintendo 3DS. The new game will take place entirely within the region's major city, Lumiose, and will feature a mix of exploration and real-time battles. Pokémon Legends Z-A will be released on the Switch and Switch 2 in late 2025.
