Calgary Flames sign goaltending prospect Arsenii Sergeev
Arsenii Sergeev has signed with the Calgary Flames. The 22-year-old Russian shot-stopper just finished off an exceptional season in the NCAA with the Penn State Nittany Lions and put pen-to-paper on a two-year, two-way contract on Monday morning. The deal kicks in for the 2025-26 season and is valued at US$866,250 annually. Sergeev was a seventh-round pick, 205th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft and after spending two years at UConn transferred to Penn State this year. The move proved fruitful. Sergeev played in 33 games for the Nittany Lions this year, posting a .919 save-percentage, a 2.54 goals-against average and a 19-9-4 record. His 19 wins saw him lead all goaltenders in the Big 10 and he posted a conference-best four shutouts, too. 'What he's going through right now, it's just going to make him better and get him more ready for pro hockey,' the Flames' director of goaltending, Jordan Sigalet, told Postmedia last month. 'We have seen a lot of growth in his maturity, his consistency and just his game overall. 'Everywhere he goes, he's just loved by his teammates because of his compete level. He's a unique goalie. There's not a lot of style with him, but he has this very unique awareness for where pucks are and he'll do anything to get a piece of his body on it.' The Flames are well-stocked at the goaltending position with Sergeev signed. Dustin Wolf has locked-down the starting job for the NHL club this season and looks like he could be starring in the crease for the next decade or so, while Walttieri Ignatjew, Devin Cooley and Connor Murphy are all playing well in the minors. Dan Vladar has been solid as the backup at the the NHL level, although he is an unrestricted free-agent this summer. daustin@

Penn State defeats UConn in OT to advance to Frozen Four
ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WTAJ) — Penn State won a thriller 3-2 in overtime over UConn to advance to the Frozen Four for the first time in program history. Goals were tough to come by with Huskies goalie Callum Tung stopping 38 of 41 shots while Arsenii Sergeev turned aside 42 of 44 shots. The scoring began early though with Joey Muldowney finding the back of the net just three minutes into the game to put UConn up 1-0. Penn State would have a response at the 13:27 mark of the period when Tyler Paquette found Dane Dowiak in the slot for the equalizer to send the game to the second period tied at one. Tung and Sergeev continued to match each other save for save in the second period with both goalies turning aside shot after shot, however the Huskies got a lucky break. Tabor Heaslip corralled the puck at the point and threw the puck on net, but it hit the arm of Penn State defenseman Jarod Crespo and bounced in the back of the net to give UConn a 2-1 lead. Penn State had an answer after an unfortunate bounce. 30 seconds after the Huskies took the lead the Nittany Lions tied it up when J.J Wiebusch found the puck in the circle and sniped one top shelf for the equalizer as the game headed to the third period tied 3-3. Both teams had a few chances in the third period, but neither found the back of the net and the game headed to overtime. The action stayed just as good in overtime with Tung and Sergeev turning into brick walls down the stretch. The game appeared to be headed to a second overtime, but with just over two minutes left Charlie Cerrato shook off a defender at the blue line to get into the offensive zone and made a spin-o-rama pass to Matt DiMarsico who buried the game winning goal to send Penn State to the Frozen Four. The Nittany Lions will faceoff against Boston University in St. Louis on Thursday, April 10. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
