Detroit Red Wings to retire Sergei Fedorov's No. 91 in 2026
(Image via Getty Images) The Detroit Red Wings has announced that they will officially retire No. 91, worn by Hall of Famer Sergei Fedorov, as part of a special pre-game ceremony on January 12, 2026, ahead of their home matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes at Little Caesars Arena. Fedorov is one of the most celebrated players in the league who has played in 18 NHL seasons, compiling 1,179 points, a plus-261 rating, and 839 penalty minutes in 1,248 regular-season games between the Red Wings, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Washington Capitals. According to the reports, Detroit has announced its decision about Fedorov's retirement on August 19, 2025. His exceptional skill, relentless drive, and lasting impact, playing a pivotal role in bringing three Stanley Cup championships to Detroit, make him the perfect embodiment of the qualities deserving of our franchise's most prestigious honor. They further added, 'My parents, Mike and Marian Ilitch, had a special reverence for Sergei as one of the most dynamic and charismatic players of his era, and someone who made a tremendous impact on our organization. All of us at the Red Wings look forward to hosting Sergei and his family in January to pay tribute to his remarkable career." The 55-year-old was also enshrined in the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2016. Fedorov's No. 91 becomes the Red Wings' ninth retired number in franchise history, joining Sid Abel, Alex Delvecchio, Gordie Howe, and others. The jersey retirement likely took this long because of Fedorov's messy exit from Detroit to Anaheim following a contract dispute. Former Blue Jackets Forward Sergei Fedorov's Number To Be Retired By Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings have announced that former CBJ forward Sergei Fedorov''s #91 will be retired by the Wings. The ceremony will be held on January 12, 2026. In Detroit, he played 908 games and totaled 954 points. Fedorov was traded to Columbus in November of 2005. He played 185 games for the Jackets and totaled 113 points. On February 28, 2008, he was traded to the Washington Capitals, and he would retire in from the NHL in 2009. Fedorov is probably the greatest player to have ever worn the Union Blue.
