Sydney pub shooting update: Police investigate suspicious vehicle linked to fatal Forest Lodge attack
Police in Sydney's west have found a burnt-out Mustang that matches the description of a vehicle seen near a shooting incident that left one man dead and another seriously injured as they were leaving an Inner West pub. Emergency services were called to Primrose Avenue in Rydalmere shortly before 9.50pm on Monday night following reports of a car on fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, and no injuries have been reported in connection with the fire. Authorities have launched an investigation into the suspicious vehicle fire and are also examining possible links between the burnt Mustang and a shooting that occurred outside The Harold Park Hotel in Forest Lodge on Sunday. 'Any links to recent incidents will be examined as part of the investigation, though none have been confirmed at this stage,' a NSW Police spokesperson said. The shooting outside the pub tragically claimed the life of 39-year-old Gilbert Shino. His companion, 31-year-old Maradona Yalda, was seriously wounded after a gunman opened fire on them as they made their way to their car. Yalda had recently returned to Australia just four days prior to the attack, despite being aware of a contract reportedly placed on his life. He was pursued and shot several times but survived thanks to the prompt assistance of medical students who were inside the hotel. The two men shot were walking to a car about 100m from the hotel when they were attacked. 'As they got closer to the vehicle they appear to have been ambushed,'Detective Superintendent Alf Sergi told 2GB Radio on Monday. 'It was outrageous, a brazen and callous attack.' A bullet narrowly missed a woman working at the hotel. 'It would have been very, very frightening for them.' Medical students and a nurse at the pub helped provide treatment, as well as a doctor who lived nearby, Det Supt Sergi said. The 31-year-old, who survived despite being shot multiple times, is believed to be linked to organised crime. 'We believe it was a targeted attack, based on one of the victim's backgrounds, with possible links to organised criminal networks,' Det Supt Sergi said. 'He was chased by the offender. He was shot a number of times. He slumped at the back of the hotel.' Following two surgeries, Yalda is currently in stable condition. He is known to have close associations with former Comanchero bikie Andre Kallita and is allegedly linked to the Assyrian street gang DLASTHR. Detectives described the shooting as 'brazen and callous,' noting that bullets were fired indiscriminately across the busy street, narrowly missing pub staff and patrons. It is the 13th public shooting - and 4th fatal attack - in Sydney since Christmas. Not all victims have had underworld links - plumber John Versace was executed in his driveway in Condell Park in a case of mistaken identity. As investigations continue, police are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage related to the incident to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. - with AAP

The new financial battleground for divorcing couples
Disputes over frequent flyer points and hidden cryptocurrency have emerged as battlegrounds in property fights between separating couples amid a rise in digital assets, family law experts reveal. Kalus Kenny Intelex Lawyers partner Josephine Sergi, a family law specialist, said frequent flyer and other reward points were increasingly forming part of property settlements. 'It's often an afterthought for a lot of people because when they're giving details of their assets and liabilities they don't think of those,' Sergi said. Points 'can be quite valuable' Some rewards points could be cashed in or transferred, Sergi said, and 'they can be quite valuable'. In a 2017 Family Court case, then Justice Robert Benjamin said a de facto couple's 'Qantas Frequent Flyer points are property and have some value'. '[For] some inexplicable reason, the de facto husband had declined to provide full details of his Frequent Flyer account,' the judge said. But the husband had 'a clear obligation to disclose that detail', Benjamin said. The points were said to total a combined 1.7 million at the time of the hearing. The judge ordered the husband to transfer 200,000 points from his frequent flyer account to each of their children's accounts, totalling 600,000 points. The wife was authorised to redeem the points for the children's flights.

$4.8 million, vehicles, jewelry and firearms seized in North Texas smoke shop raid
A joint law enforcement operation resulted in the seizure of vehicles, jewelry, firearms, and $4.8 million, following a probe into alleged illegal drug distribution through businesses named Sky Rise and ZRD Smoke Shops, officials announced Wednesday. The investigation, spearheaded by the Texas Department of Public Safety, involved law enforcement agencies from Dallas and Kaufman counties. Attorney claims shops operate legally under Texas hemp laws Forney Police Department The seizures occurred on Monday. On Wednesday, an attorney representing the businesses said the smoke shops are "federally legal hemp small businesses targeted by questionable police actions." "The business owner has consistently demonstrated a commitment to transparency and compliance," said David Sergi of San Marcos-based Sergi and Associates, in a statement. "He has offered to share his books and tax records to show that he is operating a lawful enterprise and has always been willing to cooperate with law enforcement. As a respected leader in the Texas hemp industry, he has helped set the standard for accountability and responsible business practices." Sergi said Sky Rise and ZRD Smoke Shops are "fully licensed retailers" selling legal hemp products following Texas law. "All products have been tested by reputable, independent laboratories, and the businesses hold certificates of analysis confirming their compliance with legal THC limits," Sergi said. Forney police discuss lengthy investigation leading to raid Meanwhile, the Forney Police Department said the raid followed a "lengthy investigation into the illegal distribution of controlled substances through multiple businesses in the area, including the Sky Rise Smoke Shop in Forney." Forney Police Department No additional details or potential suspects are being immediately released to "protect the integrity of the process," the Kaufman County District Attorney's Office said. In addition to the Texas Department of Public Safety, participating agencies included the Kaufman County Street Crimes Unit, the Terrell Police Department, the Forney Police Department, the Kaufman County Precinct 2 Constable's Office, and the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office. The investigation is continuing, officials said.
